Ayutthaya - Video Guide of Thailand's Ancient Capital City
Ayutthaya is one of the most popular places to visit near Bangkok. Read my full guide to Ayutthaya here:
Visiting Ayutthaya, Thailand, is one of the best day trips to take from Bangkok. It's Thailand's ancient capital city, second after Sukhothai. The city has a very long history with many ups and downs. It was overthrown by the Burmese in the mid 1700's and many of the gems and treasures from the temples were moved the Yangon at the Shwedagon Pagoda (another very impressive site if you visit Burma). I have visited Ayutthaya a number of times while living in Thailand, but a few weeks ago I joined a small travel blogger group and we toured a few of the most important temples, and I also snuck away for some food and refreshment! The Ayutthaya historical park is the most significant section of the city, an area where there's a concentration of temples and historical sites to visit. The city in now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The first temple we stopped at was Wat Yai Chai Mongkon (วัดใหญ่่ชัยมงคล), a must visit temple in Ayutthaya. The temple is recognized by its huge chedi that leans a little to the side, sort of like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. At the site, you can then climb a flight of stairs to the middle level section that offers a nice view of the surroundings. Surrounding the temple are many statues of Buddha, most of them wrapped in orange cloth and in many symmetrical patterns. Just like Wat Pho in Bangkok, there's also a reclining Buddha, though this one made of stone and wrapped in yellow cloth instead of gold. I had visited the temple before, but had never stopped to see the palace of King U-Thong and his many roosters. After Wat Yai Chai Mongkon (วัดใหญ่่ชัยมงคล) in Ayutthaya we proceeded to Wat Phanan Choeng (วัดพนัญเชิงวรวิหาร), a temple that's famous for housing a 19 meter high golden seated Buddha. The temple is a cross between traditional Thai and Chinese beliefs so there are lots of cross similarities and the temple is very Chinese Confucian in appearance. There are many section of Wat Phanan Choeng (วัดพนัญเชิงวรวิหาร), and you can spend some time walking around each section of the temple. It's nearly always busy and bustling with people, especially on the weekends. Finally, the famous Wat Mahathat (วัดมหาธาตุ) is one of the most visited and well known temple complexes in the Ayutthaya historical park. It's the temple where the famous head of Buddha wrapped within the banyan tree is - that's always a favorite place for everyone to take pictures! The rest of the temple is not in that great of condition, but it's mostly in ruins. The temple is still nice to walk around for a few minutes.
Ayutthaya is hot, and when you are walking around the temples, you're going to sweat for sure! So be prepared for the sun and always remember to drink plenty of water. I also like to stock up on hydration by having a fresh coconut to drink the water. Finally, whenever you visit any city in Thailand it's important to eat and to bring back some of the local speciality snacks. In Ayutthaya there's nothing more famous than a sweet called roti sai mai (โรตีสายไหม), and if you don't eat this, many Thais will say you didn't even go to Ayutthaya. It's basically a thin crepe pancake that's combined with cotton candy like sugar, wrapped into a little taco and consumed. It is very sweet and full of sugar, but it is the taste of Ayutthaya and should be sampled! Have a great trip visiting the ancient capital city of Thailand!

Ayutthaya Day Tour - HUGE Freshwater Shrimp in Thailand! เที่ยวอยุธยา กินกุ้งแม่น้ำจัมโบ้ มันเยิ้ม
►Subscribe now for more food videos:
►Camera gear I use:
In this video we took an Ayutthaya (อยุธยา), Thailand day trip tour from Bangkok. After visiting a temple, we then at Thai boat noodles, visited a few more attractions in Ayutthaya, and finished the day with an epic meal of huge freshwater shrimp, one of the best foods to eat in Thailand!
Ayutthaya (อยุธยา), Thailand - The drive from Bangkok to Ayutthaya took about 1.5 hours, and we rolled into Ayutthaya sometime in the middle of the morning.
Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon (วัดใหญ่ชัยมงคล) - Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon (วัดใหญ่ชัยมงคล) is one of the most significant and interesting ancient temples to visit in Ayutthaya. What I like most about the temple is being able to climb to the middle level for a nice view over the temple complex.
Boat noodles at Kuay Teow Reua Pa Lek (ร้านก๋วยเตี๋ยวเรือป้าเล็ก) - After visiting one of the famous temples in Ayutthaya, we then headed to eat boat noodles. The boat noodles were alright, but they weren’t the best I’ve had. They were actually a little on the sweet side for me, but still good.
Wat Mahathat (วัดมหาธาตุ) - Another one of the must see attractions in Ayutthaya, locate in Ayutthaya historical park is Wat Mahathat (วัดมหาธาตุ). One of the most well known sites at this temple is the head of Buddha which fell down and has been wrapped up inside the roots of a tree.
Freshwater prawns / shrimp at Rauen Sai Nam Restaurant (ร้านอาหารเรือนสายน้ำ) - One of the best reasons to go to Ayutthaya is to eat freshwater shrimp. They are absolutely sensational. On this day trip to Ayutthaya we drove over to a restaurant called Rauen Sai Nam Restaurant (ร้านอาหารเรือนสายน้ำ). The giant freshwater prawns were grilled with nothing on them, and they are truly some of the most amazing single ingredient things you’ll ever taste in your life.
Rauen Sai Nam Restaurant
Tang Luang 347 Bang Pa-in District
Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya 13160
ร้านอาหารเรือนสายน้ำ
ที่อยู่ ทางหลวง 347 บางปะอิน
จังหวัด อยุธยา
It was a great Bangkok day trip to Ayutthaya, and I especially enjoyed the freshwater shrimp!

Ayutthaya Day Tour: Eating Amazing Giant Shrimp
We’ve been wanting to do on a Ayutthaya day tour since we first visited Bangkok.
For this Ayutthaya day tour, we leave Bangkok early in the morning and visit 5 temples including Wat Mahathat. This is the famous temple wit the giant Buddha head in the tree.
After the temples visit, our Ayutthaya day tour continues to the San Chao Rong Thong Market. This is a Thai-Chinese market which is more than 100 years old, 10 minutes from our last temple visit. There we taste some of the most delicious Thai desserts, including Thai coconut pancake, thai peanut cake and coconut candy.
At last on this Ayutthaya day tour, we go eat the amazing giant shrimp from a very local restaurant called Kung Phao Mae Thong Chup by the Chao Phraya River.
This is Claire and Rosemary from Authentic Food Quest on a mission to explore and showcase the local foods and flavors of a destination.
We highly recommend to taste these giant freshwater prawns on your Ayutthaya day tour. They are superb!
The tour we took with TakeMeTour is called:

THAI FOOD AND TEMPLES IN AYUTTHAYA | THAILAND VLOG #4
After a quick stop at the cultural centre I did a mini cooking class where I learned how to make Som Tam, a Thai papaya salad. We were treated to a huge Thai lunch. In the afternoon we visited the Chinese temple in Ayutthaya called Wat Phanan Choeng. Finally we finished the day watching how Roti Sai Mai - sweet sugar pancakes - are made. They taste delicious!

Grandma's Massaman Curry in Ayutthaya | Food Travel Vlog 4
Massaman curry is one of the most well known Thai dishes… but it’s not often my favorite dish… but then Grandma made it for me:
So like I mentioned, Thai massaman curry is usually not my favorite dish in Thailand - mainly because it’s usually prepared quite sweet, and it’s also usually quite oily. However, it is one of the most famous dishes in Thailand, and a food that many people love - in fact - a few years back, CNN.com named it as one of the best Thai dishes, or foods, in the entire world!
But anyways, Ying and I were in Ayutthaya filming for the Thai food TV documentary, and one day we went over to Grandma’s house (it was the house of a Grandma of a friend of someone on our TV filming crew) - so it was really cool to be able to film, and eat, at a local home. Ayutthaya is not just a city, but it’s a province in Thailand, so we weren’t right in Ayutthaya town, but were about 30 km outside of the town in a smaller town known as Ban Phaen (บ้านแพน). As soon as we arrived, and I saw the view of the home overlooking the calm water, I was excited.
Our first step was to go to Ban Phaen Market (ตลาดบ้านแพน), which was just about a 10 minute walk from the house. I went along with Grandma’s daughter to the market to find all the ingredients we needed to make an authentic recipes for Thai massaman curry. Grandma, formerly sold massaman curry and other curries at the market in Ayutthaya, but she hadn’t sold in many years. She knew many original and authentic Ayutthaya recipes, included one for massaman chicken.
After buying all the ingredients and spices we needed for the chicken massaman curry recipe, we then headed back home and started cooking. The first step was to prepare the curry paste (เครื่องแกงมัสมั่น) - which included chopping and roasted a bunch of different spices and herbs like shallots, garlic, galangal, dry chili, kaffir lime peel, and fingerroot (among many more things which you’ll see in the video). Then we used those roasted ingredients to pound a beautiful massaman curry paste. Next, we boiled chicken with peanuts and simmered it on low heat. In the meantime, we took the massaman curry paste and cooked it along with thick coconut cream until it turned into a beautiful, almost gravy like, sauce. We then added the coconut paste mixture to the chicken, threw in a bunch more spices like Siam cardamom and bay leaves, and simmered the massaman curry (แกงมัสมั่นไก่).
Here’s something I didn’t know (and the reason there was already a full post of massaman chicken curry cooked and ready when we arrived in the morning): massaman is better the next day, and it should be cooked one day, left to set, and eaten the next day. So in order to film and eat all in one day, Grandma had cooked a pot the previous day, so we could eat it the same day.
On this day, not only did I have an amazing time and a local Thai cultural experience, but I definitely gained a new appreciation for Thai massaman curry. It’s a complex dish, one that’s often shortcutted these days, but if made correctly can be very delicious. Massaman curry (แกงมัสมั่นไก่) is a blend of cultures, a fusion of Thai ingredients and Persian / Middle Eastern spices, all blended together in a harmony.
Grandma made an authentic, no-shortcuts, recipe for massaman curry, an original Ayutthaya dish. It was so much better than just about every other massaman dish I had ever had previously - you just can hardly find the home-cooked quality at any restaurant as you would find at Grandma’s house.
It was a wonderful day, a great cultural experience, and marvelous food!
Thank you for watching this vlog, hope you enjoyed it.

Thailand Bankok Street eats and Ayutthaya Ruins
We were invited to JD and Amnda's Wedding in Thailand. AS we began to get used to the time change and the culture that we would call home for the next 10 days we decided to check out the local food and see some temples. We found a great little coffee shop, went on a day tour of 4 temples to include Ayutthaya Ruins and finished the day with a river boat trip. This is the second of a series of videos on our trip to Bangkok and Thailand.
Should You visit AYUTTHAYA RUINS - Best Day Trip in Bangkok
We visited the Ayutthaya Ruins, Bangkoks best day trip. It only takes two hours and costs 15 Baht by train. We spent an incredible (and humid!) day climbing ancient ruins and filming the best Ayutthaya Thailand temples. We got up close and personal to these old Thai temples and learned a ton of interesting Ayutthaya history throughout the process.
Ayutthaya was a 14th Century ancient city which served as the Thailand capital city for over 400 years! This Thailand ancient city is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and exploring it’s old Thai temples is one of the top things to do in Ayutthaya. Each temple site in Ayutthaya costs 50 Baht so be prepared for these entrance fees and don’t forget to bring cash. If you want to explore all of Ayutthaya Historical Park, there are tickets that are around 220 Baht that will let you into 6 different temples. Some sights you can explore without a dress code, but others you need to have your knees and shoulders covered.
This is our favorite thailand travel vlog yet and we hope you guys enjoy it as much as we did! If you visit bangkok, Ayutthaya is an absolute must explore city. Thailand Real Food Adventure: Ayutthaya
Ayutthaya, once one of the world's biggest cities, is the third stop on Intrepid's Thailand Real Food Adventure tour. Its ruins and local foods are really unique.
Giant River Prawns (กุ้งเผา) in Ayutthaya (Insane Delicious Alert)!
When you’re in Ayutthaya, one thing you don’t want to miss is Ayutthaya freshwater prawns (shrimp). Here’s the article (but more details in another article coming soon):
Ayutthaya, the ancient Thai capital, and located about 1 - 1.5 hours drive from central Bangkok, is extremely famous throughout Thailand for its freshwater prawns. Thais that visit Ayutthaya come to visit the temples, but many would not miss the opportunity for a prawns feast. On my latest trip to Ayutthaya, Ying and I ate at a restaurant known as Ruay Goong Pao (ร้านรวยกุ้งเผา). Although it was located a bit out of the city, it was definitely worth the trip to get there - and if you love prawns / shrimp, you’re going to love this restaurant.
The restaurant is located along the slow moving river, so the atmosphere for chowing down couldn’t be better either. There’s a dining room located in the house on the shore, but we chose to sit on the floating dining room, located in the river. The scenery was great, and the relaxing atmosphere was perfect for freshwater prawns feasting. For our trophy dish, we ordered the Goong Pao (กุ้งเผา), or roasted prawns. You could either choose, 3, 4, or 5 prawns for 1 kilo, and we chose to go for the biggest ones, just 3 prawns for 1 kilo - so these guys were monsters! All they did was slice them in half, and grill them on the shell side down until they were perfectly cooked. They were insanely delicious, some of the most amazing tasting things I’ve ever had in my life. The meat of the freshwater prawns was sweet and firm, and the yellow orange colored head oil was rich and creamy - the combination was outstanding.
In addition to our platter of goong pao (กุ้งเผา), we also ordered a plate of kam goong pad cha (ก้ามกุ้งผัดฉ่า). Since these freshwater prawns were so jumbo big, they had equally huge tentacles (or maybe they are claws). So after the shrimp were roasted, the claws were then deshelled, and the meat from them was stir fried up with fingerroot, onions, garlic, and green peppercorns. It was an equally amazing tasting dish. For vegetables, Ying and I ordered Pad sai bua nam man hoy (ผัดสายบัวน้ำมันหอย), lotus flower stems that were just stir fried up nicely with garlic and oyster sauce. It was delicious as always, and made a nice accompanying dish to our roasted jumbo freshwater prawns.
Ayutthaya is famous throughout Thailand (and for visitors), for its temples and its history, and while that is great to see too, when you’re in Ayutthaya, you should not miss the opportunity to have an insanely delicious freshwater prawns (กุ้งเผา) feast!
