Ayutthaya - City Video Guide
Imagine a sprawling, sweeping metropolis filled with over a million inhabitants. This was the city of Ayutthaya during the 1600s, when it was the glittering capital of Thailand. The onetime “Venice of the East” was destroyed by the Burmese in 1767. The city was burned to the ground, leaving behind only some monasteries and the remains of other buildings.
Founded in 1350, Ayutthaya was a tremendous center of commerce and a focal point for art, religion, and politics. Head over to Wat Phra Si Sanphet, a temple you may recognize thanks to its three chedis, or towering, bell-shaped buildings. This temple once connected to the royal palace, though the connecting buildings were destroyed; today, you can wander through its crumbling red walls and marvel at what must have once been.
Get ready for your Ayutthaya tour in nearby Bangkok, which is about 50 miles south of the ruins. In Bangkok, you can travel to Ayutthaya by boat, train, or rental car. Once you’re in the vicinity, you can explore the area on foot, or rent a bike. For some true local flavor, hire a tuk-tuk (a motorized, three-wheeled cart) to carry you from place to place.
A number of markets are set up outside the ruins, so you’ll find plenty to eat after a long day of exploring the ruins. Sit back, enjoy some food, and watch as the sun sets on the ancient buildings.

Once considered the most spectacular city on Earth, the ruins of the capital of the Kingdom Ayutthaya are now a major tourist attraction easily accessible from Bangkok by car, train, or boat as either a daytrip or overnight excursion.Ayutthaya is one of Thailand's historical and majestic highlights. The capital of Thailand, then known as the Kingdom of Ayutthaya, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya was a glorified as one of the biggest cities in Southeast Asia and a regional power for 417 years. The Kingdom of Ayutthaya reached its apex in terms of sovereignty, military might, wealth, culture, and international commerce in the 16th century, when the Kingdom's territory extended into and beyond present-day Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar. Ayutthaya had diplomatic relations with Louis XIV of France and was courted by Dutch, Portuguese, English, Chinese and Japanese merchants. During the 17th century, most foreign visitors to Ayutthaya, traders and diplomats alike, claimed Ayutthaya to be the most illustrious and glittering city that they had ever visited. The map of Ayutthaya published in 1691 by Simon de la Loubere in Du Royaume De Siam is proof of such recognition. Visitors can explore and appreciate Thai history in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, which is only 86 kilometers north of Bangkok. Visitors to Ayutthaya can marvel at its grandeur reflected through numerous magnificent temples and ruins concentrated in and around the city, which is located upon an island surrounded by the Chao Phraya, Pa Sak and Lopburi Rivers. Although there are numerous attractions, the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Historical Park in the heart of Ayutthaya city, is a UNESCO's World Heritage site and a wonder to behold. Once the capital of the Thai Empire, Ayutthaya was a truly impressive city; with three palaces and over 400 temples, located on an island threaded by canals, it attracted traders and diplomats from both Europe and Asia. In 1767, 417 years after it was founded and 15 months after the siege began, the Kingdom of Ayutthaya was conquered and the city's magnificent structures were almost completely destroyed by Burmese invaders. When King Taksin the Great finally liberated the Kingdom, a new dynasty was established and the capital was moved to Thonburi, across the river from modern-day Bangkok. The ruins that now remain, many of which have been painstakingly restored, have been granted World Heritage status by UNESCO. The architecture of Ayutthaya is a fascinating mix of Khmer and early Sukhothai styles. Some cactus-shaped obelisks, called prangs, denote Khmer influence and look something like the famous towers of Angkor Wat. The more pointed stupas are ascribed to the Sukhothai influence. Ayutthaya is only located about 90 kilometers from Bangkok and can be visited on a daytrip; however, if you appreciate history and religious and historical monuments, an overnight stay will allow for two full days of sightseeing, including a dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya, past the illuminated Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Historical Park, and a visit to only of the city's many other attractions, including the nearby Bang Sai Folk Arts and Craft Center.

For the last inland town on my journey to Bangkok, I visited the temple ruins in Ayutthaya, Thailand. We visit Wat Mahathat and Wat Phra Ram. Even though this area is one of the most popular sites between Bangkok and Chiang Mai, I think I was experiencing major temple/ruins fatigue.

The ruins of the historic city of Ayutthaya was mesmerising. A city with a painful past has managed to prosper once again, all thanks to the local people who keep the city ticking. We cycled to few of the main attractions due to time constraint, we didn't managed to go to every site but it is very much achievable to see most of the site if you plan and get there early (10am). Cycle rental for full day (7 hours) 200 baht per bike.
It is a must if you are staying in Bangkok to put a day trip to Ayutthaya on your travel itinerary. It is just a 2 hour train ride from Hualampholong Station, Bangkok. Make sure to avoid the people at the station or near the station whom will try to sell you alternative travel arrangements (car, taxi, van) costing you anywhere between £400 - £700 baht each (here they are banking on the fact that you do not know the cost of the train ticket which most people don't know).
Instead, I highly recommend purchasing a ticket from the Hualampholong Station at the ticket booth. It will set you back 30 baht for an economy class. There are first class too where you are able to reserve a seat but that will cost a little more.

Should You visit AYUTTHAYA RUINS - Best Day Trip in Bangkok
We visited the Ayutthaya Ruins, Bangkoks best day trip. It only takes two hours and costs 15 Baht by train. We spent an incredible (and humid!) day climbing ancient ruins and filming the best Ayutthaya Thailand temples. We got up close and personal to these old Thai temples and learned a ton of interesting Ayutthaya history throughout the process.
Ayutthaya was a 14th Century ancient city which served as the Thailand capital city for over 400 years! This Thailand ancient city is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and exploring it’s old Thai temples is one of the top things to do in Ayutthaya. Each temple site in Ayutthaya costs 50 Baht so be prepared for these entrance fees and don’t forget to bring cash. If you want to explore all of Ayutthaya Historical Park, there are tickets that are around 220 Baht that will let you into 6 different temples. Some sights you can explore without a dress code, but others you need to have your knees and shoulders covered.

Thai Organic Farm Ayutthaya Filming with NBT TV
We had the pleasure of being invited to video alongside an NBT film crew at a friend’s organic farm in Ayutthaya. The TV crew was filming a program directed at getting kids out of the house by promoting a simple but healthy rural lifestyle, showing them the steps taken between the field and the plate.
It was a fun filled day, but the TV crew did at times get in the way of our important video work. LOL
Thom Farm has been set up to operate using the guidelines outlined by the King, which promotes a simple life and self sufficiency for Thai people.
