Laguna San Ignacio March 2013 with Baja Discovery
Laguna San Ignacio gray whale mothers and calves playing with people-filled pangas. Only 10% of the gray whale population are friendlies and this only occurs in Baja California where the whales migrate to the lagoons and bays to mate, calve, and winter. Only mothers and calves remained in the Laguna during our March visit--the rest were already making the 5000-mile journey back to Alaskan feeding waters. Amazing encounters!

The Whales of San Ignacio
San Ignacio Lagoon, in Mexico, is a haven for whale watching. Mamma whales bring their babies right up to the whale-watching boats to be petted by those of us lucky enough to be there. My wife, Liza, and I visited the lagoon in February 2017; this is a record of our visit.

Laguna San Ignacio - Don Pachico, the Grandfather of Whales
Francisco Pachico Mayoral, of Laguna San Ignacio, Mexico, recently passed away. We miss him greatly. He will always be remembered as a hero of marine conservation, and the Grandfather of Whales. Our condolences to his amazing family who are a testament to his quiet strength and vision of a world in which encounters with wild animals were something that everyone should experience.
Amazing footage of Grey Whales in Laguna de San Ignacio Hondavstheworld.com
A video of my 2 days in Laguna de San Ignacio, Baja California Mexico. Stayed at Kuyima Camp. They were a very professional outfit and very respectful to the whales. One amazing experience. The road to the lagoon i approx 50km from San Ignacio, 27km of which is unpaved dirt road with rock, sand, gravel, and corrugations for miles. Tested my front suspension to the limit. Embarrassingly laid the bike over twice on the way back, got sucked into some sand and came to a grinding halt and soft landing. Thanks to Paula; our guide y mi amiga.
