Around Town: Beaufort
Beaufort has seen a lot in its long, colorful life.
This coastal community, established in 1709 and incorporated in 1723, is the third-oldest town in North Carolina (only Bath and Edenton are older). In the three centuries since its founding, pirates, freed slaves, fishermen, and a host of other travelers have all sought shelter in this quiet corner of Carteret County.
Today, some 4,000 people live there year-round; come summertime, this town swells with folks visiting from across the state and around the world.

Beaufort SC Walking History Tour
CLICK THIS LINK for more information about Janet’s Walking History Tour of beautiful historic Beaufort SC. Located approximately halfway between Savannah and Charleston, you’ll find the picturesque town of Beaufort SC.
Known as the Queen of the Carolina Sea Islands, Beaufort’s visitors are quickly struck by both her beauty and her history.
Beaufort is the second oldest town in South Carolina having been chartered by the British over 300 years ago.
Beaufort’s rich heritage is a big part of its unique charm. It’s been acknowledged by many publications over the years, including a recent listing in Southern Living magazine’s “Small Towns We Love”. It’s easy see why.
Visitors are quickly impressed by the relaxing atmosphere of downtown Waterfront Park. The park is lined with numerous shops and restaurants on one side, and a breathtaking view of the Beaufort River on the other.
There’s no better place to take a short break than by sitting on one of the park benches and enjoying the view of the river while also observing the many splendid boats docked at the adjacent Downtown Marina.
And if all this sounds like a fun, the Beaufort experience becomes even more grand when one walks a short distance and surveys homes so impressive one historian was led to describe Beaufort as the “Newport of the South”.
Many of the homes are even larger than ones found in Charleston and Savannah.
You can soak in the beauty of Beaufort, but you wont be able to fully appreciate what makes Beaufort the jewel she is without hearing about the captivating history of this fabulous destination.
And is best done by joining Janet for her Walking History Tour.
Here’s Janet in action.
[clips of Janet]
Whether walking backward or forward, Janet never misses a beat.
Among the dozens of interesting facts Janet will share with you:
Is the part played by a former sheriff of Beaufort County, a direct descendant of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Learn about the Beaufort slave who stole a confederate supply ship in Charleston Harbor and gained freedom for himself and his family, and how he was one of the key people who made Beaufort the jewel it remains today.
You’ll also learn of recent archaeological finds which dates the oldest lasting settlement in the new world right here in Beaufort County. They’re rewriting the history books!
How is Janet’s tour being received by participants?
Currently, on a popular travel site all but one of the 79 people have given her a full 5 star rating. That’s down right incredible!
Come see the beauty that is Beaufort. And while here, spend two glorious hours with Janet and enjoy firsthand how she passionately describes Beaufort’s history like no other.
Click the button at the bottom of this video or on the link below and learn how you too can participate in Janet’s Walking History Tour and make your next trip to Beaufort one you will enjoy and remember forever.

Additional information:
When I took Janet’s Walking History tour, I was just in town for the day. It was a mid spring glorious day and the leisurely walk around town was just what the doctor ordered. It was the perfect way to “get away from it all” and mentally step back in time and relive all those three hundred years of history. There were so many interesting and fascinating events that I have decided to join Janet again for another tour in the future.
As i walked around town I thought to myself, what grand and glorious real estate here in Beaufort SC. I am not sure how it compares in price to a similar Hilton Head real estate, or for that matter, some of the real estate in Charleston SC. But I do know that some of the Beaufort SC real estate, the larger homes, are even bigger than those of Charleston and Savannah.
Beaufort tours are not nearly as extensive as those you find in Charleston SC. Charleston SC tourism is a big industry in Charleston, there are so many things to do in Charleston. Beaufort though much smaller, still has many things to do and Charleston even with all the things to do, can’t touch Beaufort for the small town charm.
The hotels in Beaufort are likewise less grand than the Charleston SC hotels, and of course less expensive. So if you are spending week in Beaufort, you can find very good lodging for a portion of the price for similar Charleston hotels. And you also gain a laid back lifestyle, a slower paced town than the larger more touristy Charleston. And it would be hard to become bored with all there is to do in Beaufort County.

Best places to move/retire in South Carolina - 10 Reasons to retire/move to Beaufort, SC 2019
Why move to Beaufort, SC? Well, do you live among the hustle and bustle of a large city and are sick of the rat race? Then Beaufort, the gem of the lowcountry, just might be the place for you! Hi I'm Sue LeFavi with Ballenger Realty. Beaufort is a quiet, coastal town that has it all; beauty, scenery and charm.
10 reasons why Beaufort: 1) Water, water and did I say water! Beaufort is surrounded by Sea Islands, it offers many charming waterfront communities with gorgeous homes reflecting the lowcountry style architecture. You've got Habersham, Islands of Beaufort, Pickney Reatreat, Cat Island and Coosaw Point, just to name a few!
2) Beautiful beaches! Enjoy the 5 mile stretch of white, pristine beaches at Hunting Island State Park, it's surrounded by 1000s of acres of marshes, lagoons and forest. And if you love to camp, it's got the states most desirable campsites with all your amenities. Also, it has the only light house in SC that is accessible by the public! You can enjoy breath-taking panoramic views of the Atlantic coast!
3) Festivals throughout the year! We've got the Water festival, shrimp festival, A taste of Beaufort, the Gullah festival the soft shell crab festival, heritage days festival and the festival of trees just to name a few!
4) The awesome weather (except maybe July and August)! 6 months of the year we enjoy perfect temperatures averaging in the 70s and in the winter, the coldest it usually gets is in the 40s first thing in the morning.
5) Vibrant downtown! You are not going to find a super Walmart or a Red Lobster here, it's the shop local mentality with charming boutiques and local favorites for dinner offering the fresh shrimp or crab catch just brought in that day!
Enjoy entertainment and demonstrations on First Friday every month while stroll along the shops.
6) Great fishing! Field and Stream magazine named Beaufort one of the top 20 fishing towns in 2008. Whether you prefer deep sea fishing, Inshore fishing or just throwing a line of the dock, we have 100s of fish species including tuna, snapper, flounder, trout, sharks and red fish. Or, as many local do, you can enjoy crabbing just off the dock!
7) History! 304 acres of the town has been designated a National Historic Landmark. Going back 500 years ago, with the discovery of the area by the Spanish, Beaufort was the site of the 2nd landing on the north american continent by Europeans, the first being one year earlier with Ponce Da Leon in St. Augustine, FL.
8) Friendly people! Yes, the southern charm is no joke, it a real thing and it's evident the minute you arrive. People are friendly and gracious here. Don't be surprised if you're strolling in your neighborhood and a neighbor rocking on his/her front porch invites you in for wine:30 or tea time!
9) Downtown waterfront, come by boat or car. Beaufort has a beautiful, quaint, exciting and safe downtown, completely walk-able with convenient parking. Spend the day walking the historic district along the waterfront and pursuing the shops. And did I mention the great restaurants downtown?
10) Arts culture. Beaufort is full of artists and galleries exhibiting all forms of studio art. In addition, the center for fine arts at USCB puts on a packed schedule of plays, musicals, chamber music, movies, symposiums and even hosts the Beaufort Interntaional Film Festival.
And if these alone aren't compelling reasons to move here, Southern Living Magazine recognized Beaufort as one of the prettiest towns of 2018!
I hope this helps you decide if Beaufort is for you!

After work on a Friday, we took a 3 hour drive to the coast for a relaxing weekend on Hilton Head Island. We stayed in an ordinary hotel off of 278. Once settled, we took a short drive over to Coligny Circle, a public entrance to the beach. Although it was still cold, the walk along the beach was pleasant and peaceful. Considering the $6 fee to enter the southern half of the island, a visit to Sea Pines and the lighthouse was well worth the visit. For food and beverage for the afternoon, we stopped at Hilton Head Brewery for brews and lunch and then to Island Winery for wine tasting with cheese and crackers. That evening we caught a nice sunset on the beach and had dinner at the infamous Salty Dog Café.
On that beautiful Sunday, we drove an hour north to the beautiful colonial town of Beaufort. In my opinion, as far as history goes, Beaufort is far nicer and more historic than Charleston. Most homes still have untouched gateways and fences dating back hundreds of years. After a nice quiet walk along the waterfront we drove an extra 30 minutes to Hunting Island. Upon arrival, the view of the coastline gave me a glimpse of what the coast looked like when the Europeans crossed over. Close to the beach is Hunting Island Lighthouse, one of the few remaining coastal lighthouses that you can climb to the top. On a certain part of the beach, there are an endless amount of dead trees in the sand, good enough for some good photographs. Our last stop along the way back home was to the Old Shelton Church Ruins in Shelton.

Three-hundred years of history continues in beautiful Beaufort, SC. Our beaches at Hunting Island are scattered with shells and shark teeth just waiting for a passerby to make the discovery on a hazy summer day. 1st of Dec 2015 Trolley Tour of Historic Beaufort in South Carolina
After we left Hilton Head Island we went north to Port Royal Island and went on a horse drawn trolley tour around the historic port city of Beaufort. There was some beautiful hones built there in the late 1700's and 1800's, the city was founded in 1711, a long time before Australia was bumped into by Captain Cook. It was very interesting, we even passed under an Oak Tree that was used as a hanging tree for anyone who fell foul of the law. I learnt what a Giddy-Up was, houses had a concrete or stone step out front to make it easy to mount your horse or get up into a carriage that pulled along side.
