Pool of Bethesda, Jerusalem
Playlist: The Miracles of Jesus; click here:
The Pool of Bethesda, located in what is now the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem, was near the Sheep Gate to the Temple. Here, according to the Gospel of John, many suffering people gathered by the water, waiting for the waters to be stirred by angels so that they could enter the water and be healed. When Jesus came to the pool, there was a man who was invalid for thirty-eight years. Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” The man was cured and he picked up his mat and walked. Before the 19th Century, scholars assumed that the pool was not a historic place and that the gospel writer was unfamiliar with Jerusalem and simply did not know; however, in the 19th Century archaeologists uncovered the pool which does match John's description.

Historical Background
1. The Pool of Bethesda marks the place where a sick man was healed.
2. Bethesda means “House of Mercy.”
3. There were two large cisterns by the Pool of Bethesda that supplied water to the temple during the times of the first and second temples until the time Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 AD.
4. Beside the cisterns were the Pool of Bethesda and a healing center. There was also a sheep market and a sheep gate close-by.
5. After the destruction of Jerusalem, the Pool of Bethesda was the location of a temple to Asclepius, the Roman god of healing.
6. A Byzantine basilica was built over the ruins of the Temple of Asclepius in the 5th century, and today the arches that supported the floors can still be seen.
7. The Crusaders built a chapel over the ruins of the Byzantine basilica.
8. A church built around 450 on the site of St Anne’s Church was dedicated to the believed place Mary, the mother of Jesus, was born.
9. The current church of St. Anne was built in the 12th century by the Crusaders and is one of the most beautiful and preserved Crusader churches in Israel.
10. Christian tradition identifies St. Anne’s Church as the home of Anne (Hannah) and Joachim, the parents of Mary, mother of Jesus.
11. In 1192, after the fall of the Crusader Kingdom, Saladin turned the church into a theological school for the study of the Quran, which is commemorated in an inscription above the entrance to the church.
12. In the 19th century, the compound was given to the French Catholic Order of the White Fathers.
13. France did extensive restoration work on the church, returning it as closely as possible to the original basilica. A second restoration was necessary after the church was damaged during the Six Day War in 1967.

Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem
August Rosado of Today In Bible Prophecy Ministries teaches with Dr. Todd Baker of B'rit Hadisha Ministries at ancient ruins of the Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem. This place is mentioned in the gospel of John chapter 5 where the impotent man was healed. August and Todd show how legalism can easily take precedence over Scripture concerning the true meaning of the Sabbath.

Israel Trip: Day 6! (Dome of the Rock, Al-Aqsa Mosque, Pool of Bethesda, Church of Holy Sepulchre)
This morning, we woke up and walked from our hotel to the Temple Mount. As we walked, we located the United States Embassy in Jerusalem. On the Temple Mount, we recorded footage of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock. After leaving the Temple Mount, we headed to the edge of Jerusalem to learn about the border fence.

Pool of Bethesda
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The Pool of Bethesda is located near the Church of St. Anne not too far away from the Lion's gate right near the beginning of the Via Dolorosa at the Old City of Jerusalem.
Since Jerusalem is located on a mountain and because of the scarcity of rain in this region, people used to collect spring and floodwater in big cisterns and pools similar to the pools and cistern that we have here. During the second Temple period, this pool and the surrounding area were used to heal and treat the disabled and this is why this place is called Bethesda which means House of Mercy in Aramaic.
Now you're probably asking what any of this has to do with Jesus.
So this is where Jesus performed one of his miracles of faith. Legend has it that once a day, an angel would grace this pool and stir up the water. The first ailing person to get into the water when it began to stir would be healed immediately. As a result, many disabled people could be seen lying next to the pool waiting for the angel to come and stir up the water. According to the Gospel of St. John 5:2-9, Jesus was walking in the pools' vicinity and saw an ailing person lying next to the pool who had been an invalid for 38 years. When Jesus asked him if he wished to get well, the man told him that since he is so weak, every time the water is stirred, someone always beats him to the pool. Then Jesus said to him Get Up! Pickup your pallet and walk and that's exactly what happened. The man was cured at once.
Now here below is the southern pool of Bethesda, at the end of the winter where you can see the pool with water.
If we look around, aside from the pool, there are the remains of several archeological finding.
Here right next to the pool is the remaining of a Byzantine Basilica for the 5h century.
And here is a Roman pagan temple from the 2nd century for Asclepius, the Greek God of healing. And over there is the remaining of a Crusader Chapel from the 12th century.
Getting back to the present, in the middle of New York's Central Park, there is a fountain with an angel's status: the Angel of the Waters Fountain at Bethesda Terrace.
Pool of Bethesda - Tour Israel
The Pool of Bethesda is a pool of water in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem, on the path of the Beth Zeta Valley. The fifth chapter of the Gospel of John describes such a pool in Jerusalem, near the Sheep Gate, which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. It is associated with healing.
In the 19th century, archaeologists discovered the remains of a pool fitting the description in John’s Gospel.

Pool of Bethesda Jerusalem
Mike Haines describes this unique miracle in John 5 where Jesus takes a situation that has darkness and chaos and speaks life and healing. Just as He did to create the heavens and the earth with His Father. This all happens to a paralytic who has faith that has completely failed. March 31 2017

Bethesda John 5 Jerusalem Israel. Music: Tower of Light.
Bethesda John 5 Jerusalem Israel. Music: Tower of Light.
During my visit to Bethesda I saw how big and how deep this place is. It is dark by the water and not a nice place to spend years. The man was healed after 38 years. I think the music of Tower of Light fits this new freedom. For if the words are not well understood, the text is added
John 5 King James Version (KJV)
5 After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.
3 In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.
4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
5 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
7 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked.
