Biking from Florence to Castello di Gabbiano in Chianti Tuscany Italy / Songs by Ernie Oldfield
Bike ride from Florence to Castello di Gabbiano in Chianti Tuscany Italy. This castle found on a hilltop between Mercatale Val di Pesa and Greve in Chianti Tuscany Italy is built by the 13th century the oldest part as we see today is the square medieval tower. Later the wealthy Bardi family of Florence acquired and expanded it. During the early years of the 14th century it was sold to the Soderini Family of Florence to which belonged Pier Soderini a Gonfaloniere of the Florentine Republic during those times. He was the one who made possible the reconciliation between Michelangelo and Pope Julius II. He was also one of the first persons in which Amerigo Vespucci wrote upon his return from the Americas. Further the Soderinis expanded the castle and later it was owned subsequently by succession by families like the Ridolfi, the Roselli del Turco and the Lemmi family who made the transformation of the building's architecture in the 19th century. The last restoration work was done by the late 20th century by the Arcaini family who also enhanced the the grapewine production in which from the 12th century in this area the wine production is already known. In our times it is now owned by Beringer Blass Wine Estate who has other vineyards in Australia, California and New Zealand. Most recently, the estates grounds had recently undergone extensive renewal and cultivation by the current owner and never ceased to demonstrate its tuscan ideologies, roots and the cultural elements prominent in the Chianti area.
