Lugano and Gandria in Switzerland’s Ticino
Lugano, in the Ticino district of southern Switzerland on the shores of Lake Lugano, has both a medieval and Mediterranean feeling that you will discover in our in-depth visit, which also brings you to the lakefront villages of Gandria and Morcote.

We go by train, boat, on foot and funicolare to show you many great sites including Swiss Miniatur, with small models of Swiss buildings in a park setting, and the Alprose chocolate factory.
The historic center of Lugano is famous for arcades that line both sides of the street forming covered sidewalk areas with a calm and sheltered environment, protecting you from the rain and sun.
This style of columns and arches is reminiscent of Italian architecture -- after all, we are right next to Italy here in Lugano and you also see that feeling of Italy in the piazza, the big open square. The language is Italian and so is much of the lifestyle here in Ticino, which enjoys a magical blend of two cultures, with Swiss efficiency and Italian charm.
You will love how well the pedestrian zone works – peaceful streets with people walking here and there. It is so friendly and sociable, makes for a great atmosphere.
We really enjoyed stopping at this famous gourmet food shop, Gabbani, in business here since 1937 and they've really branched out – they've got a wine shop, a cheese shop, and they even run a small hotel that's ranked number three on Trip Advisor.
This area is also world famous for its chocolates. In fact there's a chocolate factory just outside the city we visit, the Alprose, and you will see how they make their chocolates.
Another feature that makes Lugano so attractive are the hillside streets. It's just so much more interesting than being in a flatland town. They've got staircase streets, they've got gently sloping streets, and it's all for pedestrians. It's a small part of town. It's a section which is goes up the hill alongside the funicular, but it really is a lot of fun to check it out. Some of the restaurants put tables out on the staircase streets. That would be a fine place to eat on a nice day. And even though it's a little bit of work to walk up the steps, it's a very popular retail center.
It's a kind of backbeat neighborhood with some quirky little boutiques and unique shops and artists and craftspeople. You'll run into some real characters here. Custom-made clothing and jewelry a whole variety of fun things to look at.
It's the kind of neighborhood that would be very easy to mess, or you might be easily discouraged if you get to the foot of one of those hills and look up and think oh, no, I don't want to walk up that hill. But really it's not difficult at all. The slope is very gradual – you walk up, you walk down.
We’re also going to take you on a scenic boat ride from Lugano to Gandria, just five miles away. On a day like this it's perfect to sit up on the outdoor deck, or you could sit down below inside. It's very comfortable there as well. We're traveling in the month of May in Switzerland and it's warm and sunny especially because we're in the southern part of the country.
Gandria is truly a magical little village, clinging to the hillside along the shores of Lake Lugano. We will be getting off here and taking a little stroll through the village and finding it is a pedestrian zone. Cars are not allowed in the village itself because the lanes are just much too narrow and steep.
As soon as you get off the boat you can start exploring as we wind our way around these narrow lanes, and bends and turns and twists and discovering – always fun to explore someplace new for the first time.
This is part of our big series of movies about Switzerland taking you to most of the great places. We will bring you to Lucerne and up to Mount Titlis, Mount Rigi, over to Interlaken, up to the Jungfrau. We will see the Shilthorn, Lauterbrunnen Valley, Trummelbach Falls, Grindelwald, Bern, then on to Zermatt, the Matterhorn, yes we will have a look at the Gornergrat, up the Sunnegga, do some hiking, show you the village then on down to Lugano and Locarno in the southern part of Switzerland, the Ticino we also take you to the great city of Zürich. Look for them in our Swiss collection.

Chiavenna city tour and crossing the border to Switzerland
Lately Audrey and I have seen a shift in our travel preference from larger urban centers to more remote quiet towns. Coming from Milan to Chiavenna allowed us to slow down the pace of our travels and really get to experience what this quaint town situated in the Italian Alps has to offer. During the two days we spent here we had an opportunity to visit an Italian castle, a grotto restaurant, an artisan's workshop and attend the Bresaola festival just to name a few. One of the highlights was waking up early enough to drive across to Switzerland to eat some Swiss chocolate and snap a few photos of the ice capped mountains in the distance. Out of all the places I had a chance to visit in Italy I liked Chiavenna the most and would gladly return again someday in the future.

Chiavenna city tour and crossing the border to Switzerland:
So Hello again from Italy! Today we are visiting a town called Chiavenna which is just two hours by train from Milan. A super easy day trip and it is a beautiful town. Very colorful, so we're going to be showing you some of the attractions around town as well as the outskirts.
So next up we're about to visit Palazzo Vertemate Franchi. So let's go in and find out who used to live here.
This Renaissance masterpiece was commissioned by the Vertemate Franchi family, which was one of the wealthiest families in the area. Within the walls of their property you'll find manicured Italian gardens, a chestnut grove, an array of fruit trees, and even a vineyard. Needless to say, this place would have been quite impressive back in the 16th century.
So I've learned two things about this palace. First off, they have the only walled vineyard in all of Chiavenna. And I also learned that the family had their own chapel because they were very noble and didn't like mixing with the commoners at the local church service.
After touring the outside, we went inside the palazzo where we found painted ceilings, secret compartments meant for spying, and tiny beds because apparently people used to sleep seated and propped on pillows back in the day.
So we are standing next to the portrait of Aloisius who was a member of the family. Now apparently he was a bit of a womanizer. He really liked the ladies and these days his ghost roams the halls looking for women. So beware if you visit.
We also made sure to have a drink at the nearby fountain of youth.
Apparently if you drink this water you're going to be young and healthy the rest of your life. So I'm going to go have some. Maybe have a bath in there. I could use a bath.
We then visited the Acquafraggia Waterfalls which were visited by Leonardo Da Vinci himself. Apparently he was so impressed by their beauty that he even wrote about them in his journal.
From there we headed to a local artisan's workshop who works with pietra ollare - a local stone that he uses to create both art and cooking pots.
Speaking Italian.
And because we suffer from just-one-more-country-syndrome, we couldn't resist crossing a nearby border. Yes, we went to Switzerland!
Where we were based in Italy we were only 10 kilometers away from Switzerland so we thought why not drive over here and pickup some chocolate. Yum! Swiss chocolate!
So I'm going to try my Swiss chocolate in Switzerland. We chose some beautiful views over here. Trust me, there are mountains covered in snow. It is just that the fog is rolling in at the moment but it is a pretty setting.
Anyways, time for the chocolate. And look, it opens like an envelope. I broke the envelope. Fancy. The chocolate is like a letter in the envelope. Oh la lah.
Swiss chocolate. It is so innovative. And this is milk chocolate I believe. Wow, that looks thick.
And that's a wrap for our time in Chiavenna. It was a short and sweet visit, but it made us hungry to come back to the Alps!
This is part of our Travel in Italy series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Italian culture, Italian arts, Italian foods, Italian religion, Italian cuisine and Italian people.

Bürgenstock, Switzerland
One of the nice excursions out of town when you're visiting Lucerne is a nature hike along the face of a cliff, and it's easy. Starting with boat ride to Burgenstock then a funicular ride up the hill for some hiking through the forest.
Please subscribe:
Switzerland playlist
If you're on your way to Mount Pilatus for an excursion you can make this easy stop along the way. You'll find the boat ride gives scenic vistas of mountains all around Lake Lucerne and it just takes thirty-five minutes to get there.
The boats also have food-service, some with an elaborate lunch at the restaurant. Hop off at the Burgenstock dock. You can use one ticket that will take you all the way to Pilatus and get off partway here at Burgenstock and then get back on the boat and continue to Pilatus later.
You'll need to purchase a ticket for the funicular lift which you can do at the office right here on the dock. The sign on the dock says Kehrsiten-Burgenstock.
You ride this funky, old-fashion funicular to the top, and notice the open air balcony. It's the original railcar, the oldest funicular in Switzerland, first opened in 1888, reaching maximum a gradient angle of 58°. It's pulled up the steep hill by cables with automatic electric propulsion.
Upon reaching the top you can take a lovely nature hike following the signs to the cliff walk.
This is a level path with sweeping views across the lake and straight down the rock face of the mountain looking down about 1000 meters.
The map shows the route in a summary, you go up the hill by funicular and then you walk along this cliffside trail, from the Burgenstock resort over to the elevator, along the face of a vertical thousand-meter high cliff with beautiful views out across Lake Lucerne.
This cliff path was built between 1900 and 1905 and its legendary. Rits name is the Felsenweg and it's actually part of a slightly longer trail system.
You could keep going and walk all the way around the Burgenstock mountain and that would take you about two hours, or do the easy short hike. Up ahead you'll find the elevator will lift you to the top of the mountain.
The trail is quite level with the change in elevation of just about 100 meters along its course and at some point you could take a little shortcut up a staircase or do the loop switchback trail.
It's even accessible for baby carriages and wheelchairs, so you don't need any fancy climbing gear to enjoy this experience, and yet you get that robust feeling of an adventure, and being out in nature on the edge, at the top of this steep cliff.
Although this trail is well known, especially among the Swiss it really does not draw a lot of tourists because it slightly out of the way.
So it's a great opportunity for the visitor to Lucerne who's spending a few days there and wants to do something a little bit different, enjoying this perfect nature hike.
It's the highest, public, external elevator in Europe and fastest in the world, just takes fifty seconds to go up 152 meters, and provides a double thrill of quickly speeding skyward surrounded by the spectacular view.
But it's not free. You pay ten Swiss francs one-way or you can get a round-trip for thirteen Swiss francs. It's called the Hammetschwand
lift and was first built in 1905.
At the top you can relax and enjoy the views, sit at the outdoor cafe and have a drink, or you can have a meal in the Taverne 1879.
Now the elevator is open during the season, from early May until the end of October and the hours are 9:30in the morning until 5:30 in the afternoon.
At the top you’re at an elevation of 1132 meters.
They're doing some farming up here the old-fashioned way with a large hand scythe, keep the weeds down.
And notice how steep the hill is as that rock goes tumbling down.
A series of short hiking trails continues through the forest, very easy to walk on. They are either paved or they have a smooth gravel surface and the gradient is really not steep at all. So it's very pleasant walking in the shade of the tall trees of the forest. It's big enough to give you a feeling of adventure but small enough that you will not get lost, a little disoriented perhaps, but there are signposts to help you find your way.
Elevation is just over a thousand feet high and there's a plateau that features a 9-hole golf course. Burgenstock has always been popular holiday center, with luxury hotels that were first built from 1872.

1948 awesome elevator (mb. Schindler) at Huize Tavenier Groningen, Netherlands
The Huize Tavenier originally was a big mansion and has been converted into a childrens hospital in 1948, owned by Diakonessenhuis. It is used as an office building nowadays. Expand to read more...
Bored of talking? Go to 01:20 and enjoy the elevator now!
The elevator has been built in 1948 when this building has been converted. It has been modernized by Schindler later on, probably in the 80s or something. The shaft doors have been replaced during the process, but the old cab is still there.
The Diakonessenhuis hospital doesnt exist anymore. They used to have a hospital building from 1965, which was a very characterful one. It used to have six elevators (four of them with swing doors and no inner doors, three big and one small elevator). Two elevators had automatic doors. Furthermore the staff residential building (zusterhuis) had another elevator. All buildings have been demolished. The hospital back around 2010-2011, the zusterhuis in 2016. Only the Huize Tavenier remains as a former Diakonessenhuis location.
See a small documentation (Dutch language) over here:
Diakonessenhuis merged with Martini hospital. The Martini hospital has been extended for that reason.
