Bridport Art & Culture is lively view of the eclectic arts and cultural scene in and around Bridport in West Dorset. This historic market town and its surrounding villages are home to many artists, craftspeople and writers.

Bridport hosts an astonishing variety of festivals and events, including Bridport Hat Festival, Bridport Open Studios, gig boat racing and the Torchlight Procession, all of which feature in the film. We see inside the studios of artists Kit Glaisyer, David Risk Kennard, Andrew Leppard, sculptor Greta Berlin ( potters at New House Farm in Broadoak, Sladers Yard gallery in West Bay and Eype Centre for the Arts (St Peter's church, in this video showing work by Michael Devlin Taylor).
There's a haunting dance performance of the intercultural love poem Antara, written by Jo-Jo Spinks and performed by Interwoven Productions at Bridport Arts Centre. Painter Marion Taylor talks about Colmers Hill and the Wessex Military Band perform in Bucky-Doo Square in Bridport. There's also glimpses of local performers including Tinker's Cuss, FreAK Circus, Bridport Ukelele Group and AC/Beebies.
The writer Richard Mabey is seen on stage at Bridport's Electric Palace with Sue Clifford, formerly of Common Ground, giving local publisher Little Toller Books' first Kenneth Allsop Memorial Talk.
The film also includes two original pieces of music composed and performed by Andrew Dickson, who lives near Bridport, and is known for his award-winning compositions for film director Mike Leigh. The first piece, 'Saw', is performed on a musical saw, guitar and piano, and the second, 'Dance Piece', is performed on piano, guitar and viola (copyright Andrew Dickson 2013, all rights reserved; both used with Andrew's permission in this video).

The girls made a day trip to Bridport, Dorset on 2010.11.01. Bridport is famous with its arts scene. The small town has an arts centre, theatre, library, cinema, museum and several annual envents featuring the fictional Wessex of Thomas Hardy's noval as Port Bredy.

Bridport is a market town in Dorset, England, situated approximately 1.5 miles inland from the English Channel near the confluence of the small River Brit and its tributary the Asker. Bridport origins are Saxon and it has a long history as a rope-making centre, though many of its buildings date from the 18th century.
On the coast and within the town's boundary is West Bay, a small fishing harbour previously known as Bridport Harbour. In the 21st century Bridport's arts scene has contributed to the town becoming increasingly popular with people from outside the locality. It has an arts centre, theatre, library, cinema and museum, and several annual events. It features as Port Bredy in the fictional Wessex of Thomas Hardy's novels.
Bridport is in the county of Dorset in South West England, in the West Dorset district. Measured directly, it is about 14 miles (23 km) west of the county town Dorchester, 15.5 miles (25 km) SSW of Yeovil in Somerset, 33 miles (53 km) east of Exeter in Devon and 1.5 miles (2.4 km) inland from the English Channel at West Bay.
The coast at Bridport is part of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site that covers a continuous 96 miles (154 km) of coastline in Dorset and neighbouring east Devon. All of the town is also within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a protected landscape designation of national significance. The town's most notable landmark is the conical Colmers Hill, its distinctive shape and small clump of summit trees being very noticeable from West Street. Bridport is a Met Office coastal weather observation point.
The A35 trunk road between Honiton and Southampton passes around the centre of Bridport on a bypass. Bridport railway station was closed in May 1975, along with the Bridport - Maiden Newton branch line. The nearest railway stations to Bridport are Maiden Newton, Crewkerne, Dorchester and Axminster. The nearest international airports are Exeter and Bournemouth.
Within the parishes of Bridport, Allington, Bradpole and Bothenhampton are 514 structures that are listed by Historic England for their historical or architectural interest. Three of these are listed as Grade I (the designation of highest significance), seventeen are Grade II*, and the rest are Grade II. The three Grade I structures are Bridport Town Hall, the Parish Church of St Mary, and Holy Trinity Old Church in Bothenhampton. The seventeen Grade II* structures are: Bridport Museum, The Chantry and Daniel Taylor's almshouses (and wall of the Friend's burial place) in South Street; No.34 and Granville House in West Street; the Literary and Scientific Institute (the old library), Granby House Masonic Hall, No.9 and the walls to the garden behind No.74 in East Street; Nos.133-139 (one structure) and the Church of St Swithun in North Allington; Nos.27 and 29 (one structure) in West Allington; Downe Hall in Rawles Way; the unitarian chapel in Rax Lane; Berry Farmhouse on Lower Walditch Lane; Messrs Norman goods warehouse in West Bay; and the new Holy Trinity Church in Bothenhampton.

What's the future of food in Bridport, Dorset - and beyond?
Bridport in Dorset has a reputation for good food and drink, but could things be improved? Food Future Bridport organised an event in Bridport Arts Centre to provoke ideas and discussion about how Bridport could develop a healthy, sustainable local food economy.
After a short and lively introduction by Linda Hull, local food co-ordinator for Communities Living Sustainably in Dorset (CLS Dorset), a showing of the film Local Food Roots, and a talk by Ash Wheeler of Trill Farm near Axminster in East Devon, people were invited to discuss issues raised and then to say what they would now do for themselves and for their community.
Participants in this video include Kit Vaughan, who's restoring Prime Coppice in the Marshwood Vale in West Dorset, Mike English of Fruits of the Earth health food shop in Bridport, the Bridport artist, signwriter and gilder Jemma Thompson (she re-gilded the iconic golden weathervane on Bridport Town Hall), the Alexander technique teacher and organic food enthusiast Caroline Jucker, Sarah Wilberforce of Transition Town Bridport and Susan Readman of Bridport Community Orchard.
Subjects covered include the desirability of street and farmers' markets, the temptations and drawbacks of supermarkets, the role played by the influential West Dorset MP and 2010-2015 Minister for Government Policy Oliver Letwin in forming the UK's food culture, and much else besides.
