Sierra Nevada National Park, Granada, Almería, Spain, Europe
The Parque Nacional Sierra Nevada (known as the Sierra Nevada National Park in English) is located in Granada and Almería provinces in south-eastern Spain. It was declared a national park on 14 January 1999. It stretches from the Alpujarra to El Marquesado and the Lecrin Valley, covering a total area of 85,883 hectares, making it the largest national park in Spain. It incorporates the municipalities of Abla, Abrucena, Alboloduy, Alsodux, Bayárcal, Beires, Canjáyar, Fiñana, Fondón, Laujar de Andarax, Nacimiento, Ohanes, Paterna del Río, Rágol, Las Tres Villas, Aldeire, Alpujarra de La Sierra, Bérchules, Bubión, Busquístar, Cáñar, Capileira, Dílar, Dólar, Dúrcal, Ferreira, Güéjar Sierra, Huéneja, Jerez del Marquesado, Juviles, Lanjarón, Lanteira, Lecrín, Lugros, Monachil, Nevada, Nigüelas, Pampaneira, Pórtugos, Soportújar, La Taha, Trevélez, Valor and La Zubia. There are more than 20 peaks over 3,000 meters, with the highest being Mulhacén (3479 m), Veleta (3396 m)[3] and Alcazaba (3371 m). The rivers that rise on the north face of the range feed the Guadalquivir basin, the most important ones being the Fardes and Genil. Meanwhile, the rivers that rise on the west and south faces run down into the Mediterranean. These include the Dúrcal, Ízbor, Trevélez and Poqueira, which are all tributaries of the Guadalfeo, which itself rises in the Sierra Nevada, and the Adra and Andarax, with their tributaries. The south and west faces are where you will find the majority of the almost 50 high-mountain lakes that exist in the Sierra Nevada, many of which are also the sources of streams and rivers. Much of the landscape, particularly above 2,400 metres (which was the perpetual snow line prior to the Holocene period) was shaped by the action of glaciers, resulting in characteristic U-shaped valleys. Due to its isolated location in the far south of Europe, the flora and fauna of the Sierra Nevada are unique. During the last ice age, species moved south to escape the colder climate in the north, and as the climate grew warmer again, these species survived by taking refuge in the mountains. 2,100 plant species have been catalogued in the park, 116 of which are classified as threatened, and over 60 of which are unique to the area (endemic). Threatened species include the Artemisia granatensis, a sub-species of the Marsh Gentian endemic to the Sierra Nevada and the Alpine Meadow-rue. One of the most emblematic plants of the Sierra Nevada is the Plantago nivalis, also known as the Snow Star. The park is home to a thriving Spanish ibex population, along with other species such as wild boar, martens, badgers and wildcats. Native bird species include the Golden Eagle, Bonelli’s Eagle, Common Kestrel, Little Owl, Eurasian Eagle-owl, European Goldfinch, Serin, Ortolan, Dartford Warbler, Wheateater, Red-legged Partridge and Common Quail. On the edge of the park lies the Botanic Garden of Cortijuela, where the endemic species of the Sierra are investigated and preserved. Popular bases for hiking in the Sierra Nevada include Capileira, Trevélez, Monachil, Güéjar Sierra and Bubión. It is relatively easy to reach the summits of Mulhacén and Veleta, whereas Alcazaba is slightly harder to reach. Dotted around the Sierra Nevada there are a number of mountain cabins (refugios) designed for the use of hikers. The three staffed cabins charge a small amount if you want to stay the night. There are a further six unstaffed cabins in a reasonable state of repair, which are free of charge.

The Sierra Nevada is a mountain range in the region of Andalucia, provinces of Granada and Almería in Spain. It contains the highest point of continental Spain, Mulhacén at 3,478 metres (11,411 ft) above sea level. Sierra in Spanish means the teeth of a saw, which peaks of a mountain range may resemble. It is a popular tourist destination, as its high peaks make skiing possible in one of Europe's most southerly ski resorts, in an area along the Mediterranean Sea predominantly known for its warm temperatures and abundant sunshine. At its foothills is found the city of Granada and, a little further, Almería and Málaga. Parts of the range have been included in the Sierra Nevada National Park. The range has also been declared a biosphere reserve. The Sierra Nevada Observatory is located on the northern slopes at an elevation of 2,800 metres (9,200 ft).

Skiing in the Sierra Nevada, Granada
Sierra Nevada is Europe’s most southerly ski resort. It offers one of Europe’s longest ski seasons, usually starting in late November and running until early May. If you're looking for a ski holiday with almost guaranteed sunshine, Sierra Nevada should be high on your list.
It's just over an hour’s drive from the beautiful beaches on the Costa Tropical and under thirty minutes from the centre of the Granada and the Alhambra Palace. The age-old saying of skiing in the morning and swimming in the sea in the afternoon really is a reality in Sierra Nevada.

Sierra Nevada motorbike trip in Andalusia, Spain
Motorbike riding to Pradollano, Sierra Nevada, Andalusia, Spain
Top 10 Places in Spain's Andalusia & Costa del Sol
Top 10 Places in Spain's Andalusia & Costa del Sol accoring to DK travel guide.
10. Sierra Nevada
The Sierra Nevada is a mountain range in Andalucia in the south east of Spain. They are the country's tallest mountains, rising to over 3000 metres. The highest peak is Mulhacén at 3,479 m. It is a popular tourist destination, as its high peaks make skiing possible in one of Europe's most southerly ski resorts, in an area along the Mediterranean Sea predominantly known for its warm temperatures and abundant sunshine.
9. Donana National Park
Doñana National Park is a natural reserve in Andalusia, in the provinces of Huelva and Seville. The park is an area of marshes, shallow streams, and sand dunes in Las Marismas, the delta where the Guadalquivir River flows into the Atlantic Ocean. It was established as a nature reserve in 1969 when the World Wildlife Fund joined with the Spanish government and purchased a section of marshes to protect it.
8. Baeza & Ubeda
Baeza is a town of approximately 16,200 inhabitants in Andalusia, in the province of Jaén, perched on a cliff in the Loma de Úbeda, a mountain range between the river Guadalquivir on the south and its tributary the Guadalimar on the north. It is chiefly known today as having many of the best-preserved examples of Italian Renaissance architecture in Spain.
7. Costa del Sol
The Costa del Sol (literally sun coast) is a long stretch of Mediterranean coastline in the Andalucia region of southern Spain. The Costa del Sol stretches for over 150 km, for 54 km east of Malaga, and as far as the provincial border of Cadiz, some 100 km south west of the city.
6. Ronda
Ronda is a town in Malaga in Spain. Set in and around a deep gorge spanned by an impressive bridge, the relaxing atmosphere here is a great break from some of the more tourist-ridden places on the south coast of Spain, however it can still be packed with day-trippers from the Costa del Sol, especially during the peak summer months.
5. Cádiz
Cádiz is on a narrow slice of land surrounded by the sea. The older part of Cadiz, within the remnants of the city walls, is commonly referred to as the Old Town. It is characterised by the antiquity of its various quarters, among them El Pópulo, La Viña, and Santa María, which present a marked contrast to the newer areas of town. While the Old City's street plan consists of narrow winding alleys connecting large plazas, newer areas of Cadiz typically have wide avenues and more modern buildings.
4. Cordoba City & La Mezquite
Very few places in the world can boast of having been the capital of a Roman province (Hispania Ulterior), the capital of an Arab State (Al-Andalus) and a Caliphate. Such splendor is palpable in the intellectual wealth of this city, that has seen the birth of figures like Seneca, Averroes, and Maimonides. The historic quarter of Córdoba is a beautiful network of small streets, alleys, squares and whitewashed courtyards arranged around the Mezquita, which reflects the city's prominent place in the Islamic world during medieval times.
3. Real Alcázar, Seville
A beautiful palace in Mudéjar (Moorish) style, built in the XIV Century by Pedro I the Cruel. With its myriad rooms, extravagant architecture, lavish gardens with many courtyards, ponds and secrets to be explored, it is a fascinating place to visit. Be sure to check out the room where Christopher Columbus's journey to the Americas were planned.
2. Seville Cathedral and La Giralda
Once judged the third largest church in the world after Saint Peter's in Rome and Saint Paul's in London, this is now arguably the largest church in the world when compared using the measurement of volume. The fifteenth-century cathedral occupies the site of the former great mosque built in the late twelfth century. The central nave rises to an awesome 37m over a total area of 11,520m².
1. Moorish Granada
Granada is a mid-sized city located in Granada Province in the Andalucia region of Spain. Rich in history and culture, Granada is a very worthwhile city in Spain for a tourist. In addition to a rich multicultural history, the Alhambra and other monuments, a student-driven nightlife, and skiing and trekking in the nearby Sierra Nevada, Granada offers a break from the summer heat of other Andalusian cities such as Córdoba or Seville.

Sierra Nevada defies many concepts associated with skiing. Located barely a stone's throw from the Mediterranean coast, it has practically guaranteed sunshine, the best Spring snow conditions in Europe, and is still reasonably priced compared to many of its European counterparts.
Resort Facilities
Please see out extended section on this - recommended! Click Here!
The Ski Season & Environment
As one of Europe's highest resorts it is (perhaps surprisingly) very snowsure and typically has a long season. Traditionally the season starts around the end of November running through to the end of April or even into the first week of May. The longest season on record was the winter of 2008/9 which ran from the 15th November 2008 until the 17th May 2009.
Sierra Nevada literally means Snowy Mountain Range, and it includes some of the highest peaks in Europe, not to mention the highest concentration of peaks over 3,000m in the country. The Mulhacen at 3,482m is the Iberian Peninsula's highest.
The ski terrain is majestically overlooked by the jagged glacier-formed Veleta peak, at 3,398m, Spain's third highest after Aneto (3,404m) in the Pyrenees.
The Sierra Nevada ski resort offers its visitors a wide and ever expanding range of facilities as well as a ski terrain to suit skiers and boarders of all standards.
Families
Families will enjoy quality hotel accommodation and children's facilities such as the Mirlo Blanco recreation zone, with activities including Ski Bike, Inner Tubing, Ice Skating and a Roller-Sled (a cross between a roller-coaster and bob-sled).
The crèche and Snow Garden are well-run establishments with fully trained staff to look after children up to six years old.

Ski Equipment Hire
Getting kitted out and ready for the slopes is made easy at Rio Sport Intersport equipment-hire shop, where you will find quality rental equipment and a knowledgeable team of English speaking staff to kit you out with the right equipment according to your standard.
Beware of street sellers offering too low priced equipment hire - the equipment can be poorly maintained and the staff are rarely knowledgeable.
You will also find the British Ski Center, based at Rio Sport, for any tuition or guiding requirements you may have. Ask directly for the British Ski Center to avoid confusion with the shop's own Spanish Ski School.

Climate & Snow
An important factor, which very few resorts can boast, is that you are practically guaranteed sunshine throughout your stay!
Being so far south, the climate is superb for brushing up on the deepest ski tan you are likely to get anywhere! Visitors are consistently stunned at how the snow lasts during the typically deep-blue-skied and sun-blazoned days.
Much of this is due to the resort organisers working extremely hard at preparing the runs each and every night.
By packing the snow down, even the shallowest of snow base may be maintained for several weeks even if it does not snow for prolonged periods
In addition to this, the resort is equipped with one of the most advanced snow making systems in existence. So much so, that the resort organisers guarantee skiing here even if it does not snow a single flake. This has been proven over the winters of 2005/6, 2006/7 and 2007/8, three seasons where early snowfall was especially limited.
The winter of 2006/7 was a very difficult year for Europe, with little precipitation, and when there was any the temperatures were too mild even for the hardiest resorts to use their snow-making facilities.
Sierra Nevada, however, proved its worth due to its altitude, which offers temperatures low enough and humidity levels ideally set for the cannons to work. The resort was proud to announce itself as the first resort to open in Europe (except for the higher glacier resorts).
Be Prepared
In spite of the sunshine, bad weather can always happen in the mountains, so be sure to pack sensible clothing and be prepared. The ski terrain in Sierra Nevada is very open and exposed and conditions can change extremely quickly!
When the snow and weather are favourable however, the openness of the ski terrain provides some of the most exhilarating free skiing/riding to be found anywhere.
Off Piste
Off-piste skiing in Sierra Nevada has made a great name for itself, with easily accessible zones all over the terrain, very little avalanche risk by European comparisons, and wide open expanses for all to explore and enjoy!
