Hot Air Balloon Lands in NE Cedar Rapids, Iowa Neighborhood 08-18-2013 B-Roll
A hot air balloon stalled in Northeast Cedar Rapids Sunday evening (08/18/2013). A lack of winds forced the pilot to put down on Revere Drive. The pilot, who did not want to be identified or speak on camera, said that the winds simply stopped and she was unable to reach an open field. The balloon hovered over the street for several minutes until the ground crew arrived to help it land safely. There was no property damage and no one was hurt. Many people turned out to see the spectacle and some of the neighborhood kids got to help pack-up the balloon.

Historical Gem Found Under Interstate
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) - In Cedar Rapids, the Iowa State Archaeologist is working to figure out exactly what a maintenance worker stumbled upon a few weeks ago.
His find is just one of many hidden gems around the city that are just waiting to be uncovered.
It's like something out of a Nicholas Cage movie, and Interstate 380 plays a big role in the story.
A Department of Transportation worker was doing routine checks along the interstate when he found a sinkhole.
Experts are saying that it was an old beer cave last used nearly 100 years ago.
It's hard to imagine it today, in fact some of these businesses that are standing over here are standing on locations where some of the houses stood at that time, said Cedar Rapids historian Mark Stoffer Hunter. And then the brewery was over that way.
That brewery was the Magnus Brewery.
People still find Magnus beer bottles all over the Cedar Rapids area even today, said Stoffer Hunter.
The worker found what looked like a sinkhole.
He said he could see stonework, stone arch work in the hole, said Iowa State Archaeologist Research Director Carl Merry.
Merry is part of the team trying to map out exactly what the worker found.
Stoffer Hunter says it's one of a few caves used to keep beer cool before the brewery's operation was shut down soon after prohibition. When Interstate 380 came through in the late 1960's, construction workers found a similar cavern nearby.
It's kind of fun to think that every day we drive down 380, we're driving over the old Magnus Beer Caves, said Stoffer Hunter.
Before 1970, it was common practice to just demolish and old building into its basement and build the new one right on top. That means all around the city, there are many pieces of the past just waiting to be found.
There's a lot of buried history in Cedar Rapids, said Stoffer Hunter. It's just under our parking lots, under our backyards, under our buildings. It just reminds us that history is always underneath our feet at all times.
The industrial history of Cedar Rapids is long and there's many a great industrial stories there, said Merry.
The Department of Transportation says that after the State Archaeologist research team completes its report, the cave will likely be filled in
They say it does not pose a risk to the roadway.

Cedar Rapids Iowa Life in the Greenway
As the houses are demolished the reality that we live in a park comes to life

Cedar Rapids, Iowa
In 2008 we went through a horrible flood. Then the powers that be made us wait ten days before we could return to our homes. When we did the whole area smelled horrific. The smell is something I will never ever forget. After we returned to our homes and cleaned them out the city created zones and told people that they couldn't return to their homes if they lived in a zone that they wanted to use for flood protection THEY LIED. They told us that the United States Army Corps of Engineers needed our houses gone to make way for flood protection (its in the article posted above by the Gazette).
It will be different living in the middle of a park without a bunch of neighbors but I can live with it. What I couldn't live with is my historical house being torn down for NO REASON AT ALL! The Army Corps of Engineers uses a cost to benefit ratio to calculate the feasibility of implementing flood protection and since the property is gone so is the help from the USACOE! Don't blame the USACOE it was the city that declared the arbitrary zones not the United States Arny Corps of Engineers! Don't believe me? Call them and ask yourself!
Did you own a house in the flood zone? Were you told you must sell so that the United States Army Corps of Engineers could build flood protection? If so let me know so I can hook you up with a lawyer.
I miss my neighbors but I don't miss the parking problems I used to have and I don't miss the drama!
Too bad a lot of people got rich off this disaster (and it wasn't the homeowners!!!)
