Civil War and Reconstruction | California History [ep.6]
This is part six of a series I’ve been doing on California history. If you haven’t seen the previous ones, that’s not necessary to see the other ones, but context is always useful. This can be viewed in isolation if you prefer though. This time it is about Civil War and Reconstruction Era California

California's involvement in the American Civil War included sending gold east, recruiting volunteer combat units to replace regular forces in territories of the Western United States, maintaining and building numerous camps and fortifications, suppressing secessionist activity (many of these secessionists went east to fight for the Confederacy) and securing the New Mexico Territory against the Confederacy. The State of California did not send its units east, but many citizens traveled east and joined the Union Army there, some of whom became famous. California's Volunteers also conducted many operations against the native peoples within the state and in the other Western territories of the Departments of the Pacific and New Mexico.
Following the Gold Rush, California was settled primarily by Midwestern and Southern farmers, miners and businessmen. Democrats dominated the state from its foundation. Southern Democrats sympathetic to secession, although a minority in the state, were a majority in Southern California and Tulare County, and were in large numbers in San Joaquin, Santa Clara, Monterey, and San Francisco counties. California was home for powerful businessmen who played a significant role in Californian politics through their control of mines, shipping, finance, and the Republican Party but were a minority party until the secession crisis.

California Capital Airshow by Ric Peterson
Watch highlights of my last airshow of the season, the California Capital Airshow including an important message from air boss Ralph Royce for 2014 at the very end, all set to the music of John Mayall and Big Head Todd.
To honor the 65th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift, Col. Gail Halvorsen was invited joining other pilots along with some of the children who received the candy that was dropped along with 2.3 million tons of supplies. It was 'Wiggly' Halvorsen's idea to attach candy with handmade handkerchief parachutes then 'wiggling' their wings, to alert the children they were about to receive treats on what became know as 'Operation Little Vittles.
Watch Gail's arrival and see him at 93 years of age meet these German families in what was a very emotional middle point of a great air display that included Micheal Goulian, The Patriot Jet Team, School Time Jet Bus, Kyle Franklin, John Klatt, Kirby Chambliss and the Red Bull Air Force, tons of warbirds, Mark Peterson's Alpha Jet, and The Canadian Forces Snowbirds. Air Boss Ralph Royce has some great adivce for you at the very end of the video.
Watch as I stroll through over 100 aircraft, vintage cars, military vehicles and other cool things like the Aerospace Museum of California pavilion and the debut of Aerojet Rocketdyne's Space and Aviation LaunchPad. The LaunchPad is a 15,000 square foot interactive science, technology, engineering and mathematics exhibit targeted to teens as they consider collegiate and career choices. Both our nations are facing a shortage of skilled workers in these fields. A recent survey by the U.S. Department of Commerce indicated that only 33 percent of eighth graders are interested and only 6 percent of high school seniors will get a bachelor's degree in the field. In Canada, university enrollment in science, math, engineering and technology related courses is at an all time low.
As part of its community relations, the airshow has awarded over 80 scholarships to deserving students from the region with an interest in aviation, aerospace, aeronautics and related fields.
The California Capital Airshow has become one of the largest and highly- respected shows in the United States. I am proud to have been a part of this great event. To Darcy Brewer and the entire crew, thank you.

B-52 Crash, Yuba City CA Broken Arrow (1961)
Declassified video of 1961 crash scene of a B-52 Stratofortress near Yuba City, California. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) Film Catalog number 342.USAF.27815; Department of Energy TF 0800082
On 14 March 1961 an aircraft accident occurred near Yuba City, California. A United States Air Force B-52F-70-BW Stratofortress bomber, AF Serial No. 57-0166, c/n 464155, carrying two nuclear weapons departed from Mather Air Force Base near Sacramento. According to the official USAF report, the aircraft experienced an uncontrolled decompression that required it to descend to 10,000 feet (3,000 m) in order to lower the cabin altitude. Increased fuel consumption caused by having to fly at lower altitude, combined with the inability to rendezvous with a tanker in time caused the aircraft to run out of fuel. The aircrew ejected safely, and then the unmanned aircraft crashed 15 miles (24 km) west of Yuba City, tearing the nuclear weapons from the aircraft on impact.
