Creation of the California State Library Part 1
CALIFORNIA OF THE PAST
Gary Kurutz, Curator of Special Collections for the California State Library explores the trinity of three pioneering men who founded the California State Library in 1849 and their generous donations to the state's history.
Recorded at the CALIFORNIA STATE LIBRARY's The Rare Book Room in 2010.
California of the Past is supported in whole or in part by a California State Library grant, by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian via Califa with services provided by Media Arts Center San Diego.
Through the digitized first person narratives of the California of the Past program, libraries are adding the living memories of community members to its archives. The libraries will encourage members of the community to visit the library to record, for example, stories of what main street used to be like, or memories of raising their children in the community, or childhood stories their parents told of life in the area.
cTv RV Life - Enjoy secrets of California State Capitol in Sacramento
On our return trips from the Sierras, we dropped by our California State Capitol located at Sacramento (last of 6 locations over 150 years). Outside, the memorial ground dedications and Vietnam statuary are beyond description and inside, be sure to check out the library. We also enjoyed the memorial commemorating Father Junipero Serra who led the quest to support native indigenous Americans with California Missions. In a future video we will highlight the 58 marquee displays featuring interesting tidbids for each of our California Counties.

250 rare books damaged by leak at California State Library
About 250 rare books were damaged during a storm at the California State Library. The storm Monday caused a leak at in the building, damaging books that date back to the 1800s. The books don’t have a price tag, but they are very difficult -- if not impossible -- to replace. Repairs are being made at the library so there isn’t another leak with a new round of upcoming storms. Librarians are using several different techniques to restore the damaged books.

Funny Sounds! United States Hydraulic Elevator-ARC Library-Sacramento, CA
Here is the final elevator I'm posting from here. There is one more elevator but it's not even finished being built yet. This is one of the original elevators on campus. This was a US elevator but it looks like something much older than that. I can't find any signs of the original brand. Maybe this was always a US. Who knows. The curved door frames are what's stumping me. This mod is wack. It's a mix of Innovation, ERM, and OTIS. Also, look at that weird cover where the original indicator was. It looks stupid lol. The motor is nice and sounds very similar to the Briggs Hall elevators at UCD. This thing sounds wonderful and makes all kinds of noise. For being in a library, this elevator sure ain't quiet!

Vintage OTIS Traction Elevators-The University Library-CSUS-Sacramento, CA
Dang! ThyssenKrupp modded these old OTIS elevators! However, I think this was a third mod. There's no way these could've been original until now, especially on a campus that mods a freakin Dover Impulse! These most likely had older Innovation Universal, and now they have newer Innovation Universal. The service elevator, which is still getting modded, got Innovation Pinnacle though. Strange that they would use nicer fixtures on an elevator nobody would see.

US Circle Hydraulic Service Elevator-Central Library-Sacramento, CA
This is going to be my last video from my meetup with Top Hound. We did film other elevators but those have been shown on my channel enough already. Anyway, this is the service elevator at the Central Library in downtown Sacramento. This one is rarely open to the public but there was an event going on in this room so we were able to ride it. Unlike the main elevators that have been raped by Innovation, this one is still original! For being a service elevator, this one is in PRESTINE condition! I love the bell! Also yes, I just realized the little pins on the wall are to hold up curtains lol. I always thought they were for looks.

A Night at the State Library: California in the Civil War
Dr. Robert J. Chandler, a widely recognized authority on the American West, will discuss California during the Civil War years. A public historian for Wells Fargo Bank for over 30 years before retiring, Dr. Chandler has written over 50 articles and several books, including California, an Illustrated History and Wells Fargo (Images of America).
In late April 1861, ten days after the Civil War began, the Pony Express brought the news to California. Although far from Eastern battlefields, the Golden State played a significant role in support of the Union. Its wealth from the gold fields bolstered credit; its thousands of troops guarded the Overland Mail routes; and its generous citizens, rallied by Thomas Starr King, gave a million dollars to aid sick and wounded soldiers. More significantly, the war brought a political revolution to California. It inaugurated black legal rights and squelched Secessionists.
TALL United States Traction Elevator-University Library-CSUS-Sacramento, CA
Lots of United States elevators this week! Here's another one, except it's on Sac State's campus, meaning it's gonna be modernized. This is an older mod since it has older Innovation Universal. Also, look at how burnt the floor indicators are. You can tell which floors this elevator sat idle on the most. This is a very TALL elevator.

Four Capitalists Who Created California and Their Epic Drive for Money
The Big Four was the name popularly given to the famous and influential businessmen, philanthropists and railroad tycoons who built the Central Pacific Railroad, (C.P.R.R.), which formed the western portion through the Sierra Nevada and the Rocky Mountains of the First Transcontinental Railroad in the United States, built from the mid-continent at the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean during the middle and late 1860s. Composed of Leland Stanford, (1824–1893), Collis Potter Huntington, (1821–1900), Mark Hopkins, (1813–1878), and Charles Crocker, (1822–1888), the four themselves however, personally preferred to be known as The Associates.
Membership:
Leland Stanford, (1824–1893), – C.P.R.R. President, Stanford University founder.
Collis Potter Huntington, (1821–1900), – C.P.R.R. Vice President, for which the city of Huntington, West Virginia was named. He is also the uncle of Henry E. Huntington, (1850–1927), founder of the famous Huntington Library with its art galleries and gardens in San Marino, California.
Mark Hopkins, (1813–1878), – C.P.R.R. Treasurer
Charles Crocker, (1822–1888), – Construction Supervisor, President of Charles Crocker & Co., a C.P.R.R. subsidiary, later founder of the larger, more extensive Southern Pacific Railroad, another transcontinental link to the east, built later in 1883.
Collectively, the four philanthropically also established the Sacramento Library Association for the state capital in Sacramento, California in 1857, which later established the present Sacramento Public Library.[3]
David Hewes, an enterprising businessman, was called the maker of San Francisco for his work in clearing land for development. He was invited to be a part of the Big Four but declined due to the financial risks. Over his lifetime he gained and lost several fortunes.[4]
In their time, the four men were sometimes referred to as nabobs or nobs, a reference to their wealth and influence. When the four built mansions in the same neighborhood of San Francisco, the area quickly became known as Nob Hill, a name it carries today.
Author, newspaper reporter and columnist Ambrose Bierce included characters based on the Big Four in his work Black Beetles in Amber as Sootymug (Hopkins), Happy Hunty (Huntington), Cowboy Charley (Crocker) and Leland, The Kid (Stanford).
