Union Pacific Depot - Cheyenne Wyoming - Listed as a National Historic Landmark
The Cheyenne Depot was built in 1886-1887 and is one of the most beautiful railroad stations in North America. The 3-story depot is made from polychromatic sandstone quarried near Fort Collins, Colorado. In 1922, major renovations extended the structure to its present 331-foot length. In 1929, the interior was modernized to reflect the then current art deco style.
The Depot faces the Capitol (about 10 blocks North). See my other videos.
Cheyenne Street Railway - Offers narrated history tours on a Trolley.
Boot Sculptures - Fundraising project, These Boots are Made for Talking, for the Depot Foundation. Made by local artists, there are 26 eight-foot-tall cowboy boots scattered throughout Cheyenne.
There are numerous historical buildings nearby including: the Albany Restaurant Bar, the Wrangler, Grier Furniture, Plains Hotel, and the Lincoln and Atlas Theatres. See my other videos for more information.

The Cheyenne Depot Museum is a railroad museum located in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
It is located inside the historic Union Pacific Railroad depot. This depot was built in 1886/7.
Typically the Cheyenne Depot Museum hosts an annual Steam Train Excursion in July.
The station is built from blocks of sandstone quarried and transported from Ft. Collins, Colorado. The Depot stands directly down the street from, and facing the, Wyoming State Capitol building, signalling its historic significance in the city and state.
It received major renovations in 1922 to lengthen the building and a redecoration 1929. From 2001 to 2006, another renovation to the depot is being made including a $6.5 million US dollar improvement provided by the City of Cheyenne and plaza built in front of the Depot. This plaza hosts a variety of music and events throughout the year.
Amtrak's San Francisco Zephyr ceased serving this station directly in 1979 in favor of a new station in Borie, south of Cheyenne. This eliminated a time-consuming backup move in and out of the station.[3] Passengers were bused between Borie and Cheyenne.
The Old West Museum and Cheyenne Frontier Days made an agreement which established the Cheyenne Depot Museum, Inc. as a 501(c)3 Corporation non-profit organization. The depot is under lease from the city of Cheyenne to this corporation for 25 years.

The Cheyenne Depot is on the list of Historic Places. Within the Depot folks hold weddings and other events. There's a Transportation Museum -dedicated to the railroad, Cheyenne's raison d'etre for existence two hundred years ago. On the plaza are five of the Cheyenne Boots, a statue entitled Pioneers and a smaller statue entitled Duster. It's also the location where the Trolley tours of Cheyenne start.
Top 10 Things to Do at Cheyenne Frontier Days - #4 Parades!
Frontier Days, the world's largest outdoor rodeo and western celebration, has a plethora of activities that will immerse you in the 10 days of western and cowboy culture. #4 (not in any particular order) on our list of top things to do at Frontier Days is Parades. Cheyenne Frontier Days puts on not one, not two, not three, but four parades!
From cfdrodeo.com:
From Until 1925 (with the exception of the spectacular parade staged in 1898 for Buffalo Bill and one in 1910 for President Theodore Roosevelt) the Frontier Days parades were nothing more than wild gallops through the streets of Cheyenne by a bunch of unruly cowboys on wild broncos. Pistols were aimed at upper story windows, pretty girls were lassoed, and pandemonium reigned. That year, the Frontier Committee enlisted Fred and Margaret Boice to stage a pageant using the theme of “The Evolution of Transportation.”
In 1926, Dazee Bristol was asked to create some floats for the parade that would last. The ones she created are still highlights of current parades. They include Dazee’s Dance Hall, Harry P. Hynds Blacksmith Shop, the Placer Mine (depicting South Pass City, Wyoming) and the Silver Crown Mine (which pokes fun at some early residents who invested in a mining scam). In the 1930s and 40s, Dazee added the Vigilante Float, the Hells Half Acre Saloon Float and the One-Room School House.
Join us in Cheyenne as people from all over the world take in the sights and sounds of some of the top marching bands and horse-drawn vehicles in the country! Parades starts in front of the Wyoming Capitol

Wyoming: Cheyenne
Cheyenne is the capital and most populous city of Wyoming. It was named for the American Indian Cheyenne nation, one of the most famous and prominent Great Plains tribes
As of the census of 2010, there were 59,467 people, 25,558 households, and 15,270 families residing in the city.
The Wyoming State Capitol was constructed between 1886 and 1890, with further improvements being completed in 1917.
Nellie Davis Tayloe Ross (November 29, 1876 – December 19, 1977) was the 14th Governor of Wyoming from 1925 to 1927 and director of the United States Mint from 1933 to 1953. She was the first woman to be sworn in as governor of a U.S. state, and remains the only woman to have served as governor of Wyoming.
The Union Pacific and BNSF railroads intersect in Cheyenne. The city is home to a BNSF railyard, as well as the Union Pacific's steam program.
The eight foot tall cowboy boots have been carefully painted by local artists to show Wyoming's and Cheyenne's history.
Cheyenne has the atmosphere of a frontier town. Cheyenne is the unmistakably cowboy country. Just as the Wrangler store trade mark slogan states::Long live the cowboy!

From the Cheyenne Depot Museum website:
In 1993 the Union Pacific donated the building to the City of Cheyenne and Laramie County, and stabilization of the building was begun a year later. Since then, the building has undergone various stages of an extensive rehabilitation project. The first floor now houses the Cheyenne Depot Museum and a brewpub/restaurant. The upper levels house offices for various city and private concerns related to tourism, economic development and the museum.
The museum tells the story of the Cheyenne beginnings during the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad, the Union Pacific Depot and the Railroad it is named after. You can view the Union Pacific Main Yard from the Coupler addition on the west end of the Depot, and experience more of the history of the Cheyenne Depot Museum.
The Depot Museum and Plaza has become the cultural and entertainment hub of Downtown Cheyenne, striving to provide educational programming and events in conjunction with the City of Cheyenne that enrich the community. We thank you for your support and invite you to view our calendar of events!

Even in retirement, Old Number 4004 remains an imposing sight. The world's largest steam locomotive, this powerful coal-fired engine was designed to pull a 3600-ton train over steep grades between Cheyenne, WY and Ogden, Utah. The 4004 is one of the eight remaining Big Boys on display throughout the country.
On display year-round in Holliday Park. The engine is in the southeast corner of the park. You can park your car in the lot accessible from East 17th Street and Morrie Avenue.
