Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve Rafting Tour to Haines - Skagway, Alaska
Your trip begins with a 45-minute ferry ride along the steep-walled fjords connecting Skagway to Haines. Over a dozen unnamed waterfalls drop hundreds of feet from the cliff sides on both sides of the boat. Marvel at the scenery and look for humpback whales, harbor seals, and bald eagles.
Upon arrival in Haines, meet your expert guide and enjoy a riverside drive along the Haines Highway. The drive is incredibly scenic: glacier-clad mountains thrust to the sky, colorful wildflowers line the road, green riverside channels provide habitat for moose, bear and trumpeter swans. The highway was declared a National Scenic Byway in 2009. Arrive at the river in the heart of the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, approximately 40 minutes away.
After boarding your raft, enjoy a scenic float down the Chilkat River through the famous Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, home of the world's largest concentration of Bald Eagles. You are immersed in the Alaskan wilderness, floating the silent river. As there are no rapids (white water) on the river, it makes for a very relaxing float. Depending on the flow of the river, the float portion lasts about 1 1/2 hours.
Along the way, your professional guide will explain the natural history of the area, Chilkat Indian Heritage, and share some exciting stories from life in the Alaskan wilderness. The number of eagles you will see is dependent on the food available to the eagles (i.e. the fish runs). During the early months of the summer season you will often see parent eagles sitting on nests, eaglets in nests and the parent eagles flying to the nest with food for their young. Thousands of bald eagles travel here to feed on salmon in the fall and winter. During very warm days, the eagles are often seen catching the thermals and soaring above the mountain peaks.
Paddling is not required, as your expert guide will push the raft along, explaining the intricate balance of nature that makes this a unique and special place. Don't leave your camera behind for this adventure!
After rafting, enjoy a picnic lunch on your way back to Haines. Board the Fast Ferry to Skagway and return to your ship with memories of an unforgettable adventure.

Chilkat Valley, Upper Chilkat River
I am a boat Captain and Wilderness Guide on the shallowest navigable river in North America, The Chilkat River in South East Alaska, lined by 6000 ft mountains sculpted only 10,000 to 15,000 years ago and fed entirely by the Chilkat Glacier. An amazing and diverse remote wilderness Eco-system that connects the coastal rain forests and ocean to the dry interior of Alaska and the Yukon territories. It contains the flora and fauna of both and is home to many wild animals such as bears, moose, wolves , over 280 species of birds, all five Pacific Salmon and many other species of fish,, The Valley of the Eagles also contains the highest concentration of Bald Eagles in the world.
I made this video to to give the viewer a glimpse of the natural beauty that we experience every day and the wild animals that we share the valley with and are fortunate to see almost every day from our specially designed shallow water jets boats that can take us deep into a wilderness with no roads and no trails inaccessible by any other means. I have included photos of the small village of Haines 25 miles down river which serves as our port of call for visitors.

2018 Senior Skip Day: Exploring with Chilkat River Adventures - Haines, AK
Legend has it that every year the graduating class from Haines High School goes and does something fun instead of going to class. It just so happens that the class of 2018 spent their whole day exploring the Chilkat Valley, an area that holds hundreds of square miles worth of trees, rivers, wildlife, and those who like to live wild.
Seriously, though, Chilkat River Adventures from Haines, AK is an AMAZING tour with great facilities, views, staff, and atmosphere. This is not paid advertising, I'm just highly recommending this tour company if you ever come to Haines, Alaska, the adventure capitol of Alaska.
Oh, and 33 Mile Roadhouse has THE BEST burgers in the entire Chilkat Valley!

Haines Wilderness River Adventures - Haines, Alaska
I spent an afternoon looking for bears, eagles, and moose. I saw all three - NO moose on camera. They are a little camera shy. Badass bear playing with a stick in the river made it all worth it. If you have the itch to see Alaska, I suggest Haines. A beautiful bay town with a traditional feel and welcoming people. 37% are left handed...coincidence? From a lefty, it all makes perfect sense.
