In recent decades, the economy of York has moved from being dominated by its confectionery and railway-related industries to one that provides services. The University of York and health services have become major employers, whilst tourism has become an important element of the local economy.
From 1996, the term City of York describes a unitary authority area which includes rural areas beyond the old city boundaries. In 2011 the urban area had a population of 153,717, while in 2010 the entire unitary authority had an estimated population of 202,400.

The city was founded by the Romans under the name of Eboracum in AD 71. It became the capital of the Roman province of Britannia Inferior, and later of the kingdoms of Northumbria and Jorvik. In the Middle Ages, York grew as a major wool trading centre and became the capital of the northern ecclesiastical province of the Church of England, a role it has retained. The railway promoter George Hudson was responsible for bringing the railway to York in 1839. Although Hudson's career as a railway entrepreneur eventually ended in disgrace and bankruptcy, his promotion of his own railway company, the York and North Midland Railway and of York over Leeds, helped establish York as a major railway centre by the late 1800s. The introduction of the railways also established engineering in the city. At the turn of the 20th century, the railway accommodated the headquarters and works of the North Eastern Railway, which employed over 5,500 people in York. The railway was also instrumental in the expansion of Rowntree's Cocoa Works. Rowntree's was founded in York in 1862 by Henry Isaac Rowntree, who was joined in 1869 by his brother the philanthropist Joseph Rowntree. Another chocolate manufacturer, Terry's of York was also a major employer. By 1900 the railways and confectionery had become the two major industries of the city. With the emergence of tourism as a major industry, the historic core of York became one of the city's major assets, and in 1968 it was designated a conservation area. The existing tourist attractions were supplemented by the establishment of the National Railway Museum in York in 1975 and the Jorvik Viking Centre in 1984. The opening of the University of York in 1963 added to the prosperity of the city. York was voted as European Tourism City of the Year by European Cities Marketing in June 2007. York beat 130 other European cities to gain first place, surpassing Gothenburg in Sweden (second) and Valencia in Spain (third). From 1997 to 2010 the central part of the district was covered by the City of York constituency, while the remainder was split between the constituencies of Ryedale, Selby, and Vale of York. These constituencies were represented by Hugh Bayley, John Greenway, John Grogan, and Anne McIntosh respectively. Following their review in 2003 of parliamentary representation in North Yorkshire, the Boundary Commission for England recommended the creation of two new seats for the City of York, in time for the general election in 2010. These are York Central, which covers the inner urban area, and is entirely surrounded by the York Outer constituency. The whole of the city and local authority area lies within the Yorkshire and the Humber constituency of the European Parliament. York is the traditional county town of Yorkshire, yet it did not form part of any of the three historic ridings, or divisions, of Yorkshire. York is an ancient borough, and was one of the boroughs reformed by the Municipal Corporations Act 1835 to form a municipal borough. It gained the status of a county borough in 1889, under the Local Government Act 1888, and existed so until 1974, when, under the Local Government Act 1972, it became a non-metropolitan district in the county of North Yorkshire. As a result of 1990s UK local government reform, York regained unitary status and saw a substantial alteration in its borders, taking in parts of Selby and Harrogate districts, and about half the population of the Ryedale district. The new boundary was imposed after central government rejected the council's own proposal. The City of York Council has 47 councillors.

We have arrived at our next destination! York! and honestly this is such a cute little town - absolutely loved our time here!
First up we walked around the historical medieval city walls before making our way into the town before some little red boats caught our eye in the river.
Jess convinced me to jump on a self drive boat, and we have never driven a boat by ourselves before - so much fun highly suggest you do it if you come to York.
Even though we are in York, we couldn't help but pick up a Cornish pastie to sit down and have as a snack to warm us up.
When asking my cousin where we should go, she said check out Betty's Tea Room for some clotted cream and tea and it did not disappoint.
The next day we show you around our amazing hotel - the Principal York before heading into the Shambles to try our very first Yorkshire pudding!

The River Ouse in Flood in York City Centre, North Yorkshire, UK - 28th September, 2012
Footage from the city of York, after the River Ouse burst its banks, flooding the surrounding land, including shops, homes, car parks, fields and pubs. This is one of the highest heights that the River Ouse has ever been to, and it occurred after several days of very heavy and persistent rain. The video begins at the flooded Wellington Row in front of Westgate Apartments and the Royal Mail depot, where the car park is under several feet of water, and some cars are partially submerged. Ducks and Geese occupy the shallows at the edge of the river, that is usually dry land. The top of a sunken barge and its TV aerial can be seen across the river. York Rowing Club is also featured and is flooded. From the Lendal Bridge, the views upstream towards the Railway Bridge show just how high the water is. Beneath the Lendal Bridge, the steps to the footpath beneath go straight into the floodwater, where a bicycle chained to a post becomes another flood victim. Across the Lendal Bridge, Dame Judi Dench Walk is completely submerged, and houses near the river are sandbagged.The other side of Lendal Bridge see's a partially destroyed pontoon, where the pleasure boats are usually moored. The views then are from the balcony next to the Pitcher and Piano pub both up and down the river. The next views are from the bottom of King Street near the heavily flooded King's Arms pub, after which views are from the Bridge overlooking the flooded King's Arms pub and surrounding flooded buildings. On the other side of the River, the height of the river can be seen against the Queen's Hotel and Queens Staith. The video ends along North Street and Wellington Row where it is evident that the flood barriers have worked well and protected the street and numerous properties.

A Tourist's Guide to Whitby, Yorkshire, UK
Whitby is a small, picturesque, seaside and fishing village on the east coast of Yorkshire, Northern England.

Review: Queens Hotel, York, North Yorkshire, England - March 2014
Another business meeting, and another hotel, this time in the lovely city of York - the historic capital of Yorkshire. I stayed for one night in the Queens Hotel, with a top-floor River Ouse facing room.
The hotel was decent, although showing some signs of wear and tear, and possibly in need of some updating.
My room itself whilst small, was comfortable, with a good sized bed. The main downside to this hotel was that it was a little noisy, both internally and from outside sounds, as the windows were only single glazed.
I would use this hotel again, but I would also explore other places to stay in York also.

York Landmarks, North Yorkshire, England
York is filled with interesting things to see. We start by walking the city walls and visiting the Bars (or gates). The Romans built walls here centuries ago, and remnants of their work still appear.
Back into the city we visit the Merchant Adventurer's Hall, a medieval guildhall, still used today for important civic business. It wasn't all about money - these organizations also supported hospitals, education and other charities.
A short walk away we visit Clifford's Tower, (or Cliffort's - depending on the source). This fortress, built on an artificial mound, has been a central military defense for about 1000 years. Of course it's changed over the centuries, and the surviving edifice looks like it could lean-over at any moment. The location makes for wonderful views of the city.
