Yokochos are one of Tokyo's best kept secrets, back alleys crammed with little bars and eateries serving traditional Japanese fare.

A great place to relax and meet some locals over a beer, takoyaki or yakitori skewer. There's lots of Yokocho dotted all over Tokyo, each with it's own particular style and atmosphere, mostly down to the neighbourhood itself. You'll typically find all eateries are fairly cheap and almost exclusively Japanese style cusine, like yakitori, yakiniku, grilled fish, and some street food favourites like takoyaki.
Nonbei Yokocho in Shibuya, a series of tiny bars sandwiched together just next to the rail tracks - about 2 mins walk from the famous Hachiko meeting spot.
Omoide Yokocho in Shinjuku, a busy spot with all kinds of eateries and patrons.
Sanchoku Inshokugai in Yurakucho, a down to earth and old fashioned feel tucked away just next to the glitzy and expensive Ginza district.
Ebisu Yokocho, has a little more of a trendy crowd.
Sankaku chitai in Sangenjaya, a very local scene as Sangenjaya is a little bit off the beaten track.

KAWAII Japanese FOOD TOUR of Harajuku - Okonomiyaki + Cotton Candy | Tokyo, Japan
In late January of 2019, I flew to Japan to shoot a video with a travel company. My trip was supposed to be only five days, but I extended it to twelve so I would have time to do some sightseeing and food tours on my own time! I’m so glad I did! This country blew my mind from the moment I landed at Narita Airport and my love for it, its beautiful culture, and its sensational food only grew with each passing day. Come along with me on my Japanese adventures!

On my third day in Japan, I headed out on an amazing Kawaii Japanese food tour of the Harajuku area with my friend Asami from Tokyo by Food and Arigato Japan. This is a really unique area of Tokyo that’s known for its imaginative food and bright, vibrant fashions, and Kawaii is basically Japan’s “cute culture,” so all of the foods here are considered cute! I couldn’t wait to start my tour!
My Film Making Kit ►
We started with a stop at Nespace Omotesando Niigatakan, which is a shopping mall in Tokyo. There, we visited a shop selling snacks from the Niigata Prefecture, including over 100 types of rice crackers. We started with sasadango, which is a mochi that’s wrapped in a bamboo leaf. It tasted like matcha and had red bean paste inside. It was nice and sweet, gooey, and cold. I loved it!
Next, I moved on to rice snacks with a chocolate coating. They were like chocolate-covered rice crackers! Then I had some crunchy, edamame-flavored rice snacks, which had lots of edamame flavor and didn’t have much salt on them.
On our way to our next stop, we passed by the first building in Tokyo that was built using concrete in 1927, after an earthquake that occurred in 1923. It looked really modern, like it was just built recently!
Our next stop was a boutique bakery that’s famous for their cronuts, which is a cross between a donut and a croissant. There, I had vanilla ice cream coated in torched honey marshmallow. There was some gooey chocolate on the inside and was the biggest marshmallow I’ve ever had. Even though it was torched, the inside was still really cold! It was like a vanilla s’more, but without the cracker.
Next was the cronut, which had a filling of Marscarpone cheese and ganache. It was very sweet, and the filling felt a lot like a custard. It was phenomenal!
The hot chocolate I had next was very sweet and perfect for such a cold day!
We continued along Urahara Street, which is a pedestrian street with lots of designer clothing shops. It was beautiful. Asami told me that a lot of the buildings had been renovated to look more modern. Our next stop was a restaurant that was hidden in a backstreet that had been painted with lots of artwork.
There, we were given oshibori, which is a wet hand towel given to customers to clean their hands. Asami walked us through the process of using the towel and calling a waiter, and then I learned about Japanese drink-pouring etiquette! We poured each other some beer, which was very nice.
Next, a mixture of flour, cabbage, mochi, scallions, more, was grilled right at our table to make a dish called monjayaki, which had the consistency of scrambled eggs and had a fishy taste from the cat roe. It’s so different from everything else here in Japan!
Then it was up to me to flip the okonomiyaki, which is a savory Japanese pancake containing cabbage, scallions, egg, noodles, cheese, and shrimp. I loved it. Then Asami brushed it with a sauce made from soy sauce, carrots, apple, and onion and topped it with Japanese mayo. There were so many flavors and I loved the texture. It was fatty and delicious, and the shrimp were cooked perfectly! I highly recommend it!
Our last stop was an area known for its Kawaii culture, including clothing for kids and young adults. There, we got some massive, rainbow cotton candy that contains six different flavors! It was way too big for me, so everyone on my tour shared it. It costs roughly 1,000 Yen, or around $10 U.S., so it’s not too bad if you’re sharing it with friends.
I hope you enjoyed my amazing Kawaii Japanese food tour! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave me a comment below. And please subscribe to my channel!

Tokyo's Yakitori Alley: Shinjuku 360 ★ ONLY in JAPAN
One of Tokyo's most famous food alleys is at Shinjuku's West gate where loads of yakitori and motsunabe restaurants date back to the late 1940s. It's a street food paradise where you can see and smell the grilling and frying -- hungry, you will be!
In this episode, John and Shingo visit OMOIDE YOKOCHO (思い出横丁) or Memory Lane. Have a look around the alley and shops in 360 VR!
Food featured:
★ Yakitori / やきとり
★ Motsunabe / もつ鍋
★ Ramen / ラーメン
★ Yakisoba / 焼きそば (fried noodles in sauce)
★ Yukhoe (Korean based dish of seasoned raw beef with egg)
※ Best seen in 4K (2160p) / change the settings and watch with WIFI on for super clear views.
Omoide Yokocho is most famous for motsunabe (stewed giblets) and yakitori. Why?
THE HISTORY:
Following WWII, flour was a government regulated good and ramen / noodles weren't available to street stands. Instead, restaurant owners turned to non-regulated ingredients like pig and cow enthralls which were readily available and cheap from American servicemen occupying the city. From this, motsunabe (stewed giblets) and yakitori (from enthralls) were born.
It's much better tasting than it sounds! About 20 shops in Omoide Yokocho still serve motsunabe like they did back in the mid 1940s.
The alley retains its old Showa period charm despite all the modern new buildings surrounding it. It's like entering a world trapped in time and definitely worth a stop on anyone's trip to Tokyo.
This place used to be called Piss Alley but who'd want to eat at a place with piss in the name? It was changed to Memory Lane which is simply more appetizing although I do make a trip to the toilets to see if they are modern washlet style or totally Medieval holes int he ground.

TOP 10 Must-Eat Japanese Foods in Tokyo
I've been to Tokyo 6 times, usually staying about a month so I decided it is time I share my favorite TOP 10 Must-Eat foods in Tokyo including the best sushi, ramen and Japanese sweets. Subscribe to my channel ► for weekly videos!
Download my FREE 10 Must-Eat Foods Map in Tokyo:
I visit Tokyo almost every year due to my obsession with Japanese culture, food, language and all the amazing friends I made throughout the past decade thus I feel like I can make this TOP 10 must-eat foods with confidence to make sure your next trip to Tokyo will be a foody-loaded adventure.
There are many sushi restaurants in Japan but in my honest opinion nothing beats the sushi chain Sushi Zanmai. This chain can be found all over Japan and over the best sushi for the best price.
I always order the deluxe sushi set after arriving in Japan, for just 3000 yen, $27 USD, you'll feast on a mouthwatering sushi set including blue fin tuna, saltwater eel, shrimp and sea urchin.
Since the Tsukiji inner fish market closed, you can still enjoy the Tsukiji outer market where you can still run into public tuna cutting. Two other major items you have to buy at the Tsukiji outer market are the Japanese custard mochi ball which is a sticky rice ball treat and the bizarre sea urchin bamboo-charcoal bun (uniman) from Hamada Shoten.
It was a total coincidence running into famous YouTube star John Daub from the show ONLY in Japan. An incredible show about everything Japan with over 1 million subscribers. John was live streaming the closure of the Tsukiji inner fish market and asking the locals their thoughts on the relocation to Toyosu.

INSANE Japanese STREET FOOD Tour of Ameyoko Market | Tokyo, Japan
When I learned that I would get to spend twelve amazing days in Japan back in January of 2019, I knew that there were many things I had to do while I was there. Among them, try their famous convenience store food, ride a bullet train, eat as many types of ramen as I could, stay at a traditional onsen, see Mount Fuji, and sample lots of authentic Japanese street food! And let’s just say Japan blew my expectations out the water! Come and join me on my epic trip through this magnificent island nation!

I’ve eaten street food in many countries around the world now, and Japan is right up there with the best of them! I couldn’t wait to try some more Japanese street foods for dinner, so my friend Shinichi from TabiEats took me to Tokyo’s most famous place to get amazing street food! Come along with us as we eat our way through Ameyo Market!
My Film Making Kit ►
My boy Shinichi promised me lots of surprises on this street food tour and he did not disappoint at all! Ameyo Market was once a black market after the war, but has evolved into a street food market where you can try all sorts of tasty treats, and it’s not all Japanese! Here, you can also get Chinese and Korean food, as well as kebabs.
The first place we set out for was a place famous for their takoyaki, or octopus balls, but they were already sold out! So instead, we moved on to a nearby stall, where we got some seafood half-bowls, which were very reasonable at just 300 Yen each, or roughly $2.80 U.S. The bowl came with squid, tuna, salmon, salmon roe, minced tuna, and some sushi rice with soy sauce and wasabi on the side. The salmon was so fresh and buttery, it tasted like it came straight from the ocean, and there’s a reason why roe is called the gems of the sea! It was full of briny deliciousness, as was the squid, which was also chewier. The minced tuna blew my mind! I’d never had a seafood bowl this fresh before. The wasabi was really hot, though!
Next, we stopped at Arirang Hot Dogs, where I got a dish called an extremely popular and trendy dish called Potatorella, which is potato and mozzarella on a stick. I had it with a sweet chili sauce and garlic. It cost 480 Yen, or roughly $4.33 U.S. It was like a mozzarella stick with a thick, crunchy potato coating and lots of melted cheese inside! It’s heavy and a little sweet and a little spicy, and is a must-try!
Next, Shinichi took me to a Korean street food stall, where we picked up the most popular South Korean street food dish, tteok-bokki, which is stir-fried mochis in a spicy, sweet sauce called gochujang along with fish cakes, sausage, and green onion. It was gooey and delicious, and had some nice Asian spices in it. There weren’t any sausages in this one, but it was amazing. The gochujang sauce was almost like a sriracha or a spicy sweet-and-sour sauce. It was hot, but apparently the Korean version is even spicier! I loved it!
After that, we went across the street to a place with an endless menu for some oysters! You get 5 oysters for 1,000 Yen, or roughly $10 U.S. I tried my oyster with ponzu sauce and a squeeze of lemon. It was huge and incredibly fresh. The biggest oyster I’ve ever had!
Shinichi got some fish called shishamo, which have roe inside them! I had it with some mayo. The fish was nice and steamy, and wasn’t too salty or fishy. The fish are small enough that you can eat the bones with no problem, and the Japanese mayo with them was fantastic!
Lastly, we went to a sort of stand-up bar that sells 20 varieties of sake! I got a super dry one that was strong but light at the same time. You have to be careful with sake; just because it’s light doesn’t mean is isn’t super strong! Each glass is only 500 Yen each, or about $4.50.
Wow! What an incredible street food tour. While Shinichi’s favorite thing was the Potatorella, I couldn’t stop raving about that amazing seafood bowl! Talk about a fresh, amazing, Japanese meal!
I hope you enjoyed my epic nighttime street food tour at Ameyo Market in Tokyo! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave me a comment below. And please subscribe to my channel if you haven’t already. I will see you in the next travel food adventure!
