Denali National Park | Alaska Cruise Excursion
For our last Alaska cruise excursion we drove 5 hours inland after our cruise ended to visit Denali National Park.
While we did not see the actual mountain Denali (formerly Mt McKinkley), the experience was so amazing and highly recommended for anyone doing a cruise in Alaska. Most people we met on the cruise did Denali either before or after the cruise and everyone loved it. If you love hiking and wildlife, it's worth a visit!
We went hiking during our time at Denali and also saw a ton of animals: moose, caribou, grizzly bears, black bears, sheep, bunnies, birds and we just missed seeing wolves. It was an amazing experience!
Thanks for watching!

20150708: Denali Shuttle Bus Tour
Exploring Denali National Park via a Denali Shuttle Bus
The 8th of July 2015, a Wednesday, was our 31st travel day. This video is part 3 of 3, covering our Shuttle Bus Tour of Denali Park on the 8th of July, 2015.
After dropping off the pups at the Tonglen Lake Kennel on the 7th of July, we were on the road early on the 8th of July arriving at the Wilderness Access Center around 07:30 AM. We boarded the tour bus and were on our way into the park shortly after 9:00 AM. The tour lasted for over 8 hours, the weather was mixed from overcast to rain...with a bit of smoke in the air from fires still raging near Fairbanks.
The video covers highlights of the tour, including both video and photographic segments. Of special note: we've included views from Eielson Visitor Center (66 Mile Point) from 3 different days; 6, 7, and 8 July 2015 so that you may get an idea of what to expect. Denali is only visible about 20% of the time! During our tour on the 8th of July, we were NOT able to see Denali. The folks on the 7th of July tour were lucky to see the road beneath them due to the smoke. However...on the 6th of July Denali revealed herself! Too bad we couldn't have booked our trip on the 6th!
Upon returning to the Wilderness Access Center we headed for the Tonglen kennels to retrieve our pups...which enjoyed a bath and a bit of grooming during their stay. We also visited the Tonglen Cafe...picking up a plate of gourmet food for dinner that night...which included reindeer sausage.

CHAPTER 3: National Parks of Alaska
We've driven the long road to Alaska and we're here and ready to explore all that its national parks have to offer! The state of Alaska is home to EIGHT national parks, but only three are accessible by road. Since we're traveling via our van this trip, we decided to focus on these three parks: Denali, Kenai Fjords, and Wrangell-St. Elias.
While the scenery was breathtaking and the memories we made will last a lifetime, the trip was not without hiccups. Traveling full time with a dog definitely presented its own set of challenges this trip but we made the most of it and saw what we could! We're already planning our next trip to the great white north and we'll have a better idea of how to best see this massive state next time around.

Here where the Chugach Mountains meet Cook Inlet we'll keep an eye out for Dall sheep, mountain goats, moose, eagles, and more. Our destination is the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center where we'll experience bears, musk ox, moose, elk herd, a caribou herd, and more Alaskan wild animals - these are our animal friends you are guaranteed to see!
These wild animals are right at home in their 200-acre habitat. Even the once thought to be extinct wood bison make for a picturesque photo with the amazing backdrop of the Chugach Mountains and Turnagain Arm.

Driving Alaska's Spectacular Denali Park Road
Each fall Denali Road Lottery winners can drive the spectacular 85 miles through Denali National Park to Wonder Lake. In 2010 and 2014 we were fortunate to have made that memorable trip. The public must apply in May each year for that year's lottery. The entry fee is $10 per person and is non-refundable. Winners of the lottery must then pay a $25 permit fee to drive the park road, a small price to pay for a once in a lifetime experience! You can apply for the Denali Road Lottery at
