The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum
The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum is one of the top 3 dinosaur museums in the world and most overseas tourist miss seeing it. The main reason behind this is because it is a concerted effort to get there, but well worth it.
First you have to get to Osaka (or Kyoto) and and catch the JR Express Toyama {Thunderbird) to Fukui. The Osaka station to use is the JR connection at Uemeda or use Shin-Osaka. You can use your JR Pass for this (or buy a ticket). The journey takes about two and an half hours so pack a lunch.
After arriving at Fukui Station, exit the terminal and it's a short walk toi the Eichzen Railway Station. From there, buy a ticket to Katsuyama. It costs 750 yen for an adult. The trip takes one hour. At Katsuyama Station there is a bus (non-JR) that will take you to the museum for 100 yen, but if it's not there I wouldn't wait for it. Take a taxi instead for 1600 yen. The bus service is not very frequent and you could be waiting up to an hour. There is an attendant at Katsuyama Station that will arrange a taxi for you.
The taxi ride takes about 10 minutes. Entry to the museum costs 700 yen for an adult. You should ask at the museum ticket counter for the bus and train schedule so that you can plan the length of your visit.
It's best to visit the museum on the weekdays as I imagine that it would get very busy on the weekends and the transport services are limited. Also note that the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month, the museum is closed -- don't get caught out here.
Besides the dinosaur fossils, in true Japanese style, there are mechatronic animations of your favourite dinosaurs.
Remember to visit the Dino Lab there and get a stamp. Also I would recomend that you buy the book of the museum for 1600 yen as a momento.
It's bit of an effort to get there but I hope you find the museum as enjoyable as I did.

Day 23 - Travelling from Fukui City to Katsuyama
After the busy day in Kanazawa, we had a relatively quiet one on this day - visit the Dinosaur Museum in Fukui. What we didn't consider was how long it would take us to reach there - at least an hour by foot from the Katsuyama train station. None the less, the snowcapped mountains were beautiful, and the train was comfortable.

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Xu Xing, paleontologist:
What you can see is actually is kind of an important fossil because it is a very important part of the body – it is the head. So basically, it is a nearly complete head of a crocodile, a primitive crocodile, of course.
11. Mid of Xu brushing the dig site
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Xu Xing, paleontologist:
So that's like a major feature for paleontology here in China: lots of the construction really helps scientists find the new fossils.

14. Mid of paleontologist Jin Changzhu
UPSOUND (Mandarin) We found the dinosaur fossil there, a shoulder-blade of dinosaur. A shoulder-blade this big.
15. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Jin Changzhu, paleontologist:
We called Professor Xu right away because he is expert in dinosaurs while I am a man for mammals. So I thought we'd better let the expert to examine and confirm. After careful examination, Prof. Xu's thought it was extraordinarily valuable.

18. Various of Sekiya and Masateru Shibata, curator of the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, digging for fossils with a hand-pick and a brush
19. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Masateru Shibata, paleontologist from Fukui Prefecture University in Japan:
Dinosaurs in China are indispensable in understanding the evolution of dinosaurs in Asia. In addition, as Japanese dinosaur researchers, we want to elucidate the evolution, the spread of dinosaurs in Japan. But in order to understand that we need to know about dinosaurs throughout Asia including China, Mongolia, South Korea, as that would lead to an understanding of dinosaurs in Japan, that is why we attach great importance to China's research.
20. Various of Xu examining an excavated sauropod hip
21. Wide of Xu on cliff overlooking the dig site and newly constructed apartments
22. Close set up of Xu
23. SOUNDBITE (English) Xu Xing, paleontologist:
Probably we have a new sauropod which is a very interesting sauropod because apparently this new sauropod displays a few features that also you see in sauropod from the southern continent for example from Africa. So this shows that we have some interesting species in this area and these species can probably tell us some unknown story about sauropod evolution.
24. Mid of Xu
25. SOUNDBITE (English) Xu Xing, paleontologist:
Around a 100 million years ago we don't have much fossil record but now with new discoveries from this area and other areas we can have a better understanding of the Cretaceous dinosaur evolution.
