Exploring Gdańsk. Things to do in the Baltic City.
We spend the day exploring Gdansk, a city in northern Poland near the Baltic sea. We start the day spending a couple of hours at the Museum of the Second World War. We then hit up a restaurant with some of the best Pierogies in the city, Dumpling Mandu. Finally we take a walk through Old Town visiting the Golden Gate, the Long Lane, Long Market and the Green Gate, making our way to the Motława River.

GDANSK:
A very important port for nearly a thousand years; this city was destroyed in the Second World War, but was later rebuilt and became one of the most amazing destinations in Europe. Indeed, Gdansk has become one of Europe’s most beautiful port cities. Currently, Gdansk has around 460000 inhabitants and is Poland’s largest northern city. Among its many landmarks; the historic city center, museums, and beaches that spread along the coast of the Gulf of Gdansk make it a great destination for summer.
The Museum of World War II:
The museum grounds cover almost 2.5 acres, while the building covers 26,000 square meters. The building is very pointedly divided into three spheres, which reflect the connection between the past, present, and future: the past — the underground, the present — the square surrounding the building, the future — the leaning tower with the glass façade and ceiling reaching up to 40.5 meters. The tower houses, for instance, a library with a reading room, lecture and conference rooms, and will eventually be home to a café and a restaurant on the top floor with a panorama of Gdańsk.
All kayak lovers are invited to 15, Żabi Kruk Street. At that place you can rent a kayak to visit Gdańsk from a slightly different perspective. You may follow one of several routes.
Golden Gate:
Built in 1612, the Golden Gate was designed by Abraham van den Block, son of the man behind the decoration of the Upland Gate. It's a sort of triumphal arch ornamented with a double-storey colonnade and topped with eight allegorical statues.
Long Market
The focal point of Długi Targ, the Long Market, is the Neptune Fountain, a bronze statue of the sea god erected in 1549 and converted to a fountain in 1633 and restored in 2011/12. During WWII, this symbol of Gdańsk was dismantled and hidden with many of the city's other treasures. It was only returned to its rightful place in 1954.
Green Gate:
Długi Targ is flanked from the east by the Green Gate, marking the end of the Royal Way. It was built in the 1560s on the site of a medieval defensive gate and was supposed to be the residence of the kings.

Poland: Class Ol49 steam loco at Poznan with a train to Wolsztyn. Includes clips from the footplate
Steam locomotive (class Ol49, number 111) working Poznan to Wolsztyn passenger trains.
Clips 1 and 2 were recorded on the footplate shortly after leaving Pozan on the 0810 from Poznan Glowny to Wolsztyn. Recorded 21st May 2003.
Clip 3 (from 0:58) was recorded the next day (22nd May 2003) and shows the same loco leaving Poznan Glowny on the same train.

PKP class Ol49 was a class of ordinary passenger (O) 2-6-2 (l) steam engine designed in 1949 and used in Poland by the Polskie Koleje Państwowe (Polish State Railways) (PKP). A total of 116 were built between 1951 and 1954, 112 for the PKP and four for export to North Korea, by Fablok in Chrzanów. They replaced the older Ok1 and Ok22.
Several examples are still in use, based out of Wolsztyn, while others have been mounted at various locations across Poland. At least one example has been exported for preservation and can be found at Stoomcentrum Maldegem in Belgium.
The 'Wolsztyn Experience' website currently reports that loco Ol49-111 is in dismantled condition at Leszno and is unlikely to be re-assembled.

Wolsztyn (German: Wollstein) is a town in western Poland. It is the seat of Wolsztyn County, and of the smaller administrative district of Gmina Wolsztyn. Wolsztyn is famous as the location of a locomotive roundhouse, which is the last place in Europe to supply steam locomotives for regular, timetabled train services on the national railway network. These services run to Poznan. The site also includes a railway museum featuring restored locomotives. An annual parade of locomotives takes place at the start of May -- the 2007 event, which also celebrated the roundhouse's centenary, attracted 20,000 visitors.
Wolsztyn also includes a large lake (Jezioro Wolsztyńskie; Wolsztyn Lake), next to which is a former palace (built in Classical style in the early 20th century, and now used as a hotel and restaurant), and a park. The town has a parish church dating from the 18th century, as well as several other museums.

Poznan (Latin: Posnania; German: Posen) is a city on the river in west-central Poland, with a population of 551,627 in the end of 2010, the city with its suburbs form the largest metropolitan area in western Poland. Poznań is among the oldest cities in Poland, and was one of the most important centres in the early Polish state, whose first rulers were buried at Poznań's cathedral. It is claimed to be the first capital of the kingdom of Poland. Poznań is now Poland's fifth largest city. It is the historical capital of the Wielkopolska (Greater Poland) region, and is currently the administrative capital of the province called Greater Poland Voivodeship.
Poznań is today one of the largest Polish centers of trade, industry, sports, education, tourism and culture. More recently it also claims to be an important design center as a number of initiatives were undertaken: Concordia Design, Poznan School of Form, Art&Fashion Festival to mention only a few. Poznań is also becoming a know-how hub with many technological parks and transfer of knowledge centers (the oldest one started in 1995 is Poznan Science and Technology Park.
The city hosts regular international trade fairs and was the host city for the United Nations Climate Change Conference in December 2008, a key stage in the creation of a successor to the Kyoto Protocol. Poznań was one of the host cities for the association football tournament UEFA Euro 2012. The city also hosts a number of rowing world cup events by the Malta lake (for example ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in 1990, 2001, and again in 2010). Also, a great number of various international festivals takes place in the city - Transatlantyk -- Poznań International Film and Music Festival, Malta International Theater Festival and Maski Festival to name just a few.
In 2012 the Poznan's Art and Business Center Old Brewery (Stary Browar) won a competition organized by National Geographic Traveler and was given the first prize as one of the seven New Polish Wonders. Poznań has been placed at high positions (very often the first one in Poland) in many ratings as a city with a very high quality of life.[1][2] The city has also won many times a prize awarded by Superbrands for a very high quality brand of city of Poznań (city as a brand).
Poznan along with two other Polish cities Wrocław and Kraków were classified in 2010 as high sufficiency cities by Globalization and World Cities Research Network and thus they all have a chance to become global cities in a near future given their fast development pace.

Upminster Steam Mill
The windmill at Upminster in Essex was built by James Nokes in 1803, and as business was brisk he added a steam powered mill in 1811. The windmill has survived, but unfortunately the steam house has been lost to time, so this computer reconstruction is an attempt to show how it once may have looked.
The engine was a modified Boulton and Watt Bellcrank engine similar to that on display in the London Science Museum.
This film clip has be produced in HD format, so if downloaded should give a sharp image at full screen size.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Over six million Polish citizens, divided almost equally between ethnic Poles and Polish Jews, are estimated to have perished during World War II. Most were civilians killed by the actions of Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, and their respective allies. At the International Military Tribunal held in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1945–46, three categories of wartime criminality were juridically established: waging a war of aggression; war crimes; and crimes against humanity. These three crimes in international law were for the first time, from the end of the war, categorised as violations of fundamental human values and norms. These crimes were committed in occupied Poland on a tremendous scale. In 1939 the invading forces comprised 1.5 million Germans and nearly half a million Soviets. Poland's territory was divided between Nazi Germany and the USSR. In the summer and autumn of 1941 the lands annexed in the east by the Soviets, containing large Ukrainian and Belarusian populations, were overrun by Nazi Germany in the initially successful Operation Barbarossa against the Soviet Union. Wartime German and Soviet actions eclipsed the sovereign Polish state, inflicted massive damage to the country's cultural heritage, and killed millions of Polish citizens. War crimes against Poland included deportations aimed at ethnic cleansing, imposition of forced labor, pacifications, and selective as well as mass murders.
An American Railfan in Poland: The Forest Train, 2003; 1/2
In southeastern Poland is the Bieszczady, a rugged area of mountains and forests, reminiscent of Pocahontas County in West Virginia. As in Pocahontas County the major economic activity here involved forest products, and so naturally there were many railroads in the area to support that industry. Most of these have gone the way of their U.S. counterparts, but one has survived as a tourist attraction known as the Forest Train. When I was there in 2003 two roundtrips per day ran over the 13 miles of preserved railroad, both originating in Majdan. This video takes the morning trip to Przyslup.
