Western Sandpipers at Lake Wohlford, Escondido, California

The Western Sandpiper, Calidris mauri, is one of them most common small shorebirds around the coasts of San Diego. They have dark, thin legs and long (proportional to their bodies) thin dark bill. The body is brown on top and white underneath. The feathers are reddish-brown on the crown, although nobody really notices from a distance.

These 3 birds were foraging together along the shorts of Lake Wohlford in Escondido, California. Western sandpipers are commonly seen along coastlines pecking into the sand and mud for invertebrates to eat. In the winter, the Western sandpiper is found on mudflats, beaches, lakes, ponds, and flooded fields.

The western sandpiper only nests on the tundra of Western Alaska, but can be found all over the coastline of the lower 48 United States during winter. On the tundra they eat mostly flies and beetles, but they will take whatever they can get, whether it be small crustaceans, insects, marine worms, spiders, insects, or small mollusks.

The City of Escondido needs traffic calming on Juniper Street

In a old historic southern California town called Escondido, there is a very dangerous street. The residents are trying to get the city to do something to calm traffic and have created an online petition. They have no crosswalks, no stop signs, nothing to calm the traffic on their street and they are having car accidents every week.
