A Video Tour to The Dormition Abbey Jerusalem
- Christian Video Tours in Jerusalem
A Video Tour to the Dormition Abbey on top of Mount Zion in Jerusalem.
Today we are visiting the Dormition Abbey which marks the place where Mary fell in to a deep sleep before her ascension to heaven. The Abbey is located on top of Mount Zion near the Last Supper room and the Tomb of Kind David which increase the holiness of this site. This is why there are so many cemeteries spread around Mount Zion.
The Abby is also known as Hagia-Maria-Sion in reference to the Byzantine church that formerly stood on this spot and was destroyed after the fall of the crusader kingdom.
The Abbey that we are visiting today was built in 1910 by the Benedictine Order, after the German Kaiser, Wilhelm the second, acquired the land from the ottomans in 1898 during his historic pilgrimage to the holy land. During this pilgrimage he also dedicated the German church of the Redeemer.
Before we get inside the Abbey, let's have a look at the church's roof. Here to the left is the bell tower crowned with a sign of the cock similar to the Gallicantu Church -- according to Mark, Jesus predicted, the night of his arrest that Peter will deny him 3 times before the second crow of the cock. To the right is the church conical roof made out of tin and resting on a wooden beam construction.
Now let's visit the Abbey inside.
The apse above the main altar features a Byzantine style mosaic of Mary and her Child Jesus holding an open book with the New Testament verse I am the Light of the World. The Greek initials on both sides of Mary and Jesus mean Mary, mother of God.
Around the walls of the prayer hall there are 6 side chapels which are decorated by mosaics and are one of the highlights of the church:
• St. Benedict, the founder of the order of the German Benedictines
• Mary holding infant Jesus greets pilgrims.
• Family Tree of Jesus
• Mary holding child Jesus surrounded by Bavarian bishops
• John the Baptist at the Jordan River.
• St. Boniface at the center with St. Lioba and St. Mauritius.
An exquisite element in the prayer hall is the mosaic floor. The center of the floor features three interlocking rings representing the Holy Trinity with the word HOLY in Greek inside each ring. The center ring is surrounded by circles symbolizing the stages of the Divine Revelations.
Over there above the entrance to the Church is the organ loft. The Dormition Abbey is known for its excellent acoustics and is a prized venue for concerts -- Just listen to this ceremony for the Ascension of Mary.
Now let's go down to the crypt on the ground floor which is the highlight of this Abbey and where tradition says is the place where Mary fell into a deep sleep -- Dormitio in Latin and Dormition in German.
The center of the crypt features a statue of Mary in her deep sleep - Dormition. The body of the statue is painted cherry wood while the hands and face are craved out of ivory. In the center of the cUpola above the Virgin Mary, Jesus is depicted calling his mother to heaven while he is surrounded by the pantheon of strong biblical female figures such as Eve - the first woman, Ester, Ruth the Moabite, Judith, Yael and Miriam sister of Moses.
Every year on the day of celebration of Mary's assumption to heaven, a special ceremony takes place here around Mary.
Over there, on the opposite side of the hall, is the main altar of the crypt with a recess above it presenting enthroned Mary with six of the 12 Apostles on either side of her, while the Holy Spirit hovers above their heads in the form of a dove. Golden tongues of fire descended from heaven upon the Apostles, enabling them to speak in different languages and to spread the message of Christianity throughout the world. As we have mentioned before, the site of the Dormition Abbey is right next to the upper room where this event of Pentecost actually happened.
Here behind an iron lattice, is a small pieta statue showing Mary holding her son on her knees after he was removed from the Cross. Over there, is an altar dedicated to John the Baptist with a wooden relief depicting a lamb in its center -- a popular symbol of Jesus, based on the words of John the Baptist behold the Lamb of God.
JERUSALEM: The PLACE WHERE VIRGIN MARY 'FELL ASLEEP' (DIED), DORMITION ABBEY ⛪✝️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit the Abbey of the Dormition which is an abbey in Jerusalem on Mt. Zion just outside the walls of the Old City near the Zion Gate. According to local tradition, it was on this spot, near the site of the Last Supper, that the Blessed Virgin Mary died, or at least ended her worldly existence. Both in Orthodoxy and Catholicism, as in the language of scripture, death is often called a sleeping - or falling asleep - and this gave the original monastery its name. The church itself is called Basilica of the Assumption (or Dormition). In the Catholic dogma of the Assumption of Mary, Christ's mother was taken, body and soul, to heaven.
Jerusalem is a city in the Middle East, located on a plateau in the Judaean Mountains between the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea. It is one of the oldest cities in the world, and is considered holy to the three major Abrahamic religions—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Upper Room Overview Tour, Last Supper, Pentecost, Jerusalem, Israel, Mt. Zion, Holy Land
See an overview of the Upper Room and all that happened before Christ's suffering and crucifixion!
Location
1. The Upper Room is in a second-story building in Jerusalem that commemorates where Jesus shared the Passover (Last Supper) with His disciples.
2. It is located directly above the Tomb of David and near the Dormition Abbey on Mount Zion.
3. It is also called the Cenacle Room, which means “dining room” in Latin.
4. On the first floor of the building is King David’s Tomb. It functions as a synagogue so a head covering for men must be worn. It is divided into three sections: (1) a small synagogue room (2) a men’s viewing area of David’s tomb, and (3) a women’s viewing area of the tomb.
5. The location of David's Tomb is likely just a memorial place as Scripture says he was buried in the City of David (1Kings 2:10).
Historical Background
1. The Upper Room is believed to be the location of the first Christian church.
2. Archaeological research reveals the Upper Room is built on top of a church-synagogue built by the first-century Jewish-Christian community of Jerusalem.
3. The location of the Upper Room has been the traditional site of the Last Supper since the fourth century AD.
4. In the 5th century, the church was referred to as Zion, Mother of all the Churches.”
5. The Upper Room that pilgrims visit today was built by the Crusaders in the 12th century as part of the Church of St. Mary of Zion. The Gothic-era columns seen today were from this time era.
6. The buildings around the Upper Room are remains of a Franciscan medieval friary from around 1335.
7. The Upper Room was transformed into a mosque by the Ottomans in 1524, and a prayer niche is embedded on the south wall, directed towards the Islam cities of Mecca and Medina.
8. The Upper Room building is currently managed by the State of Israel Ministry of the Interior.
9. It’s very likely that the Upper Room was used for more than the Passover meal. It could also have been where Christ appeared to His disciples after His resurrection, where Matthias was appointed the apostle to replace Judas, and where the disciples stayed while waiting for Pentecost. Some believe it’s also where Pentecost happened or began.
10. It seems logical that all these events shared the same Upper Room as the man who allowed Christ to use his large room for the Passover meal was probably a follower of Christ who continued to allow the disciples to use it.

Ave Maria inside Dormition Abbey, Jerusalem
Ein Kerem Jerusalem Israel - St John the Baptist in the Mountains church
According to Christian tradition, John the Baptist was born in Ein Kerem, leading to the establishment of many churches and monasteries. According to the Bible, Mary went into the hill country, to a city of Judah[8] when she visited the home of Zechariah and Elizabeth. Theodosius (530) says that the distance from Jerusalem to the place where Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, lived is five miles. The Jerusalem Calendar (dated before 638) mentions the village by name as the place of a festival in memory of Elizabeth celebrated on the twenty-eighth of August.[9] The Anglo Saxon Saewulf on pilgrimage to Palestine in 1102-1103 wrote of a monastery in the area of Ein Karim dedicated to St. Sabas where 300 monks had been slain by Saracens.[10] The site of the crusader church was purchased by Father Thomas of Novaria in 1621. In 1672 the Franciscan order received a Firman from the Ottoman Sultan and 'large sums of mon[ies]' were expended in an extensive rebuilding programme. There are two churches by this name in Ein Kerem. One is a Catholic church built in the second half of the 19th century on the remnants of earlier Byzantine and Crusader churches. Inside are the remains of an ancient mosaic floor and a cave where, according to Christian tradition, John the Baptist was born. Additionally some remnants below the infrastructure of the building suggests the presence of Mikve a Jewish baptism bath that is dated to the 2nd temple period. The church is mentioned in the Book of the Demonstration, attributed to Eutychius of Alexandria (940): The church of Bayt Zakariya in the district of Aelia bears witness to the visit of Mary to her kinswoman Elizabeth.
The church has been in the hands of the Franciscans since 1674. In 1941--1942 they conducted excavations in the area immediately west of the church and the adjoining monastery. Several rock-cut chambers and graves were found, as well as wine presses with mosaic floors and small chapels with mosaic tiling. The southern rock-cut chamber contained pottery of a type found elsewhere in Jerusalem, probably from the first century CE.[14]
The other is an Eastern Orthodox church built in 1894, also on the remnants of an ancient church

Tomb of Mary in Jerusalem Video
In today Video I am taking you to visit the Tomb of Mary in Jerusalem which is located at the slop of the Mount of Olives and it is within the Church of the Assumption Jerusalem.
In Christian belief, death is our punishment for the original sin. Regarding Mary, the mother of Jesus, God is believed to have shielded here from the stain of original sin at the time of her own conception; moreover Mary remained a virgin throughout her life. As such, Mary was the first among all human beings to experience resurrection.
Catholics believe that Mary was taken up body and soul into heaven while she slept at the site that is now the basement of the Dormition Abbey on Mount Zion. The Eastern Orthodox including the Greek Church claim that Mary died in her sleep (the Dormition of the Theotokos), buried and only then experienced resurrection from the tomb.
Today, the Church over the Tomb of Virgin Mary in Jerusalem, which was built back in the 14th century by the Franciscans, is controlled by the Greek Orthodox Church and the Armenian Apostolic Church.
Now let's enter the Church of the Tomb of Mary mother of Jesus in Jerusalem.
While the entrance gate dates back to the Crusaders, the three stairs in front of the entrance are new in order to prevent against flood water.47 steps lead to the depths of the cave but there are also important graves halfway down. Here to the right at this chapel, are the traditional graves of Marry's parents Anne and Joachim -- here to the right is the tomb of Anne and here is the tome of Joachim. Lower down on the left hand side, is the tomb of Joseph the Carpenter of Nazareth, Jesus' adoptive father and Mary's husband.
The Underground hall is shaped like a Cross but in now temporary T shape as the area opposite the stairs is blocked off because of flood damage.
To the right, there is the chapel housing Mary's Tomb. We are now entering the chapel to see and touch the Tomb of the Virgin Mary -- the burial place Mary mother Jesus. The Glass plates surround the tomb of Mary in order to prevent pilgrims from taking mementoes and here above the Tomb of Mary, is an opening in the ceiling symbolizing Mary ascent to heaven.
During the years the Moslems ruled Jerusalem, they built a prayer nice (Mihrab) in the cave facing East to Mecca and it is here to the left of the Tomb of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Behind Mary's Tomb, further along the cave, there is a painting of the Holy Mother and her son, to which Christians attribute special powers.
On the western side there is a Coptic altar.
Every year on August 15, while Christians all over the world celebrate the Assumption of Mary, a big ceremony is taking place here at the Mary Tomb in Jerusalem -- the actual burial place Mary mother Jesus...both by the Catholic and the Orthodox ......... for each of them I have a separate video.
