Whale watching Laguna San Ignacio
Short video of our whale watching tour from Camp Kuyima at Laguna San Ignacio, Baja California, Mexico.
These gray whales are in this large lagoon to breed and give birth to their babies during the winter months. Once they are big enough, they will go on the long journey up to Alaska for the summer months.
We went out in a small skiff to a designated, very specific area at the mouth of the lagoon. There we waited until the whales came up to the boat and started to play. There where mothers with babies, as well as, large males coming up to the boat. They where not at all bothered by our presence and seem to enjoy the interaction with us, as is very apparent in the video. It seemed as if they where putting on a show for us, by rolling, splashing and blowing water around the boat. And then come up right beside the boat for a nose rub...

Mexico whale watching at Kuyima
Gray whale watching in Laguna San Ignacio, Baja California Sur at Kuyima camp.
These are friendly whales in their natural habitat, they are playful and curious. They come from Alaska 3 months every year to a few spots in Baja California to breed in calm waters with no predators.
The Mexico government is protecting these whales and is very strict about how the watching is done. There is a maximum number of boats, and a limited time on every trip.
This is a once in a lifetime experience and you can do it too. Check kuyima.com

Interactions with the Gray Whales of Laguna San Ignacio
Laguna San Ignacio is one of the lagoons on the western coast of Baja California Sur where Eastern Gray Whales migrate every winter to give birth and mate. These animals were nearly hunted to extinction until the 1970's when commercial whaling of the species ended. About that time, a local fisherman discovered friendly behavior by these animals in the lagoon which continues today. The interactions are initiated by the whales and once they leave the protection of the lagoons in late spring on their northward migration back to Arctic waters, this type of contact with humans is no longer sought out.
Ecoturismo Kuyima is one of several whale watching tour operators in Laguna San Ignacio and is the camp our group stayed at.

San Ignacio: the oasis in the middle of desert - Baja California Sur - LeAw in Mexic
In this episode, we crossed Baja California from the Pacific Ocean to the Sea of Cortez visiting San Ignacio. San Ignacio is a palm oasis town in Mulege Municipality: here the Baja California's arid Central Desert terrain gives way to a large grove of lush green date palms. The town had few inhabitants and grew at the site of the Cochimi settlement of Kadakaamán and the Jesuit Mission San Ignacio founded in 1728.
We boondock for free at Posada Conception at km 112 in Baja Conception.

Laguna San Ignacio Whale Watching
Kuyima 2012
This video is about Kuyima 2012
geoglifo ballena kuyima canal 22 I y II
Entrevista a participantes --in situ-- del proyecto GEOGLIFO DE LA BALLENA KUYUIMÁ.
