Max Blumenthal at the Educational Bookshop
This is a talk for Journalist Max Blumenthal, the author of Goliath: Life and Loathing in Greater Israel. The event was organised by the Educational Bookshop in Jerusalem, and took place at the American Colony Hotel on Monday the 11th August 2014.
As Blumenthal reveals, Israel has become a country where right-wing leaders like Avigdor Lieberman and Bibi Netanyahu are sacrificing democracy on the altar of their power politics; where the loyal opposition largely and passively stands aside and watches the organized assault on civil liberties; where state-funded Orthodox rabbis publish books that provide instructions on how and when to kill Gentiles; where half of Jewish youth declare their refusal to sit in a classroom with an Arab; and where mob violence targets Palestinians and African asylum seekers scapegoated by leading government officials as demographic threats.
This talk was largely attended, and Blumenthal signed copies of his book after the talk.

A tribute to John-Roger, Dss From Jerusalem, Israel
For over 50 years, John-Roger, DSS (Doctor of Spiritual Science), has traveled the world, guiding people to find the Spirit within themselves and teaching how to live a healthy, loving, peaceful, and rewarding life.
In 1971, John-Roger, DSS founded the nondenominational Church of the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness, through which he has shared the teachings of Soul Transcendence, which is becoming aware of oneself as a Soul and as one with God, not as a theory but as a living reality.
John-Roger, DSS has led groups of up to 150 people on Peace Awareness Trainings throughout the Middle East. His journeys have taken him to such places as the former USSR, Yugoslavia, India, China, Japan, Israel, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and throughout Africa, South America, North America, Australia, and Europe.
In the late seventies, John-Roger established Network Of Wisdoms (NOW) Productions, which has recorded over 6,000 of his seminars and which also produces his nationally shown cable TV show, That Which Is. Besides his own show, John-Roger has appeared on numerous radio and television shows and been a featured guest on Larry King Live.
His influence extends into the educational arena, as the founder, first president, and now chancellor of the University of Santa Monica (USM), which offers master's degrees in Spiritual Psychology. He is the founder and chancellor of Peace Theological Seminary & College of Philosophy (PTS), which offers master and doctorate degrees in Spiritual Science; PTS headquarters is also home to Peace Awareness Labyrinth & Gardens. He is also the founder and chancellor of Insight University, which offers a doctorate degree in Transformational Leadership, and the founder and spiritual adviser of Insight Seminars, which offers experiential, transformational seminars. In addition, he is the founder and spiritual adviser of the Institute of Individual and World Peace and of The Heartfelt Foundation.
John-Roger is a prolific writer, with over 50 books to his name and 4 bestsellers, including a #1 New York Times bestseller. His more recent books, The Rest of Your Life, Serving & Giving, and Living the Spiritual Principles of Health and Well-Being (all written with Dr. Paul Kaye), as well as Fulfilling Your Spiritual Promise and many others, are available for order online through Amazon and are in bookstores nationwide. To keep up with his writing, he founded Mandeville Press, an independent publishing house that publishes books offering a contemporary look at ancient wisdom.
John-Roger has also produced over a dozen films with friend and actor Jsu Garcia, including three feature films. Their first feature Spiritual Warriors, released in 2007 was inspired by John-Roger’s bestselling book, Spiritual Warrior: The Art of Spiritual Living and screened in over twenty-five countries, and officially selected for various film festivals. In 2011 John-Roger and Jsu Garcia co-produced, co-wrote and co-directed The Wayshower, starring Oscar Nominees Eric Roberts and Sally Kirkland, which also inspired the recent book by John-Roger of the same name. And most recently Mystical Traveler – The Life & Times of Dr. John-Roger is the feature length documentary of John-Roger’s life, co-produced and co-directed by John-Roger and Jsu Garcia, released in 2014 and currently screening around the world and in film festivals. You can find John-Roger’s films on both Amazon and iTunes.
In all that he does, John-Roger, DSS encourages people to check out for themselves the information he presents and, through their own experience, see how it works to bring them more abundance, joy, and loving in their lives. He has transformed the lives of many people by educating them in the wisdom of the Spiritual Heart.
The common thread throughout all of John-Roger's work is loving—of self, others, and God—and encouragement for each person to discover that loving within, for that is where God also dwells.
Tmol Shilshom one of the most interesting Bookstore Cafe in Jerusalem
Tmol-Shilshom*, bookstore-cafe restaurant in Nahalat Shiva, opened in 1994. Named after Nobel laureate S.Y. Agnon's novel, Tmol-Shilshom is located in a 130 year-old building. Originally, the space was used as a dwelling, but in the 1970s, as the entire neighborhood gradually turned into a commercial center, this building, too, hosted small businesses and tradespeople
In 1996, we expanded Tmol-Shilshom to include two separate sitting areas, and since then we frequently accommodate literary or other events in one hall, while serving our regular customers in the other.
Our claim to fame (aside from the salmon fillet in fig sauce, the Amanda Salad and the cheese cake) is that we quickly became a well known establishment, where Israel's best known writers read from their works. The first one was Yehuda Amichai, who read from his poetry at the opening of Tmol-Shilshom in June 1994. Since then we`ve had Amos Oz, A.B. Yehoshua, David Grossman, Batya Gur and many others.
In the course of the years we`ve had to overcome many challenges, such as the hard days of the second Intifada. Having survived all that, we`re now one of the veteran and favorite cafes in town. Some people like us for the food, others for the books, and others yet for the atmosphere. There`s always something to do at Tmol-Shilshom.
Tmol-Shilshom is open from 9 a.m. till 1 a.m. (closed on Shabbat).

Rights, Rituals and Contestation: The Holy City of Jerusalem -- Prof. Michael Dumper
This lecture was held in Dar Isaaf Nashashibi, in Jerusalem, 4th February 2016. It was a joint event between the Kenyon Institute, the Educational Bookshop, Dar al-Tifel al-Arabi, and the Khalidi Library.
The gradual erosion by Israel of Palestinian control over the Haram al-Sharif is highly symbolic of the extent of Israeli colonisation in East Jerusalem. Has this reached a tipping point? Are the changes in arrangements on the holy site irreversible? Are the activities of the Temple Mount radicals merely a Trojan horse for the Israeli state? What are the implications of these developments for other areas and other issues in Jerusalem, and for the future of the city?
Michael Dumper is a Professor in Middle East Politics, University of Exeter. He is the author of Jerusalem Unbound: History, Geography and the future of the Holy City (2014), The Politics of Sacred Space: The Old City of Jerusalem and the Middle East Conflict (2001), and The Politics of Jerusalem since 1967 (1997).
Professor Dumper was introduced by Raja Khalidi who is a Palestinian economist who worked until 2013 with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), and has researched and published widely on the Palestinian development problematique.
