Ein Kerem: Jerusalem's village within a city
Christian sites, peaceful surroundings draw many to this neighborhood on the southwest border of Jerusalem.
In a peaceful valley surrounded by natural groves, Jerusalem's picturesque southwest neighborhood of Ein Kerem.is known for its Christian history sites and its present-day artists colony feel.
It's kind of the small village of the milk and honey country you expect to find, says one visitor interviewed here. Beautiful people and beautiful nature.
According to Christian tradition, Ein Kerem is where Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, miraculously became pregnant; and where she was visited by her cousin Mary, who was pregnant with Jesus. The two women met beside the village well, now called Mary's Well. Many pilgrims come to drink from the well and visit the ancient churches built here.

Ein Kerem Jerusalem Israel - St John the Baptist in the Mountains church
According to Christian tradition, John the Baptist was born in Ein Kerem, leading to the establishment of many churches and monasteries. According to the Bible, Mary went into the hill country, to a city of Judah[8] when she visited the home of Zechariah and Elizabeth. Theodosius (530) says that the distance from Jerusalem to the place where Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, lived is five miles. The Jerusalem Calendar (dated before 638) mentions the village by name as the place of a festival in memory of Elizabeth celebrated on the twenty-eighth of August.[9] The Anglo Saxon Saewulf on pilgrimage to Palestine in 1102-1103 wrote of a monastery in the area of Ein Karim dedicated to St. Sabas where 300 monks had been slain by Saracens.[10] The site of the crusader church was purchased by Father Thomas of Novaria in 1621. In 1672 the Franciscan order received a Firman from the Ottoman Sultan and 'large sums of mon[ies]' were expended in an extensive rebuilding programme. There are two churches by this name in Ein Kerem. One is a Catholic church built in the second half of the 19th century on the remnants of earlier Byzantine and Crusader churches. Inside are the remains of an ancient mosaic floor and a cave where, according to Christian tradition, John the Baptist was born. Additionally some remnants below the infrastructure of the building suggests the presence of Mikve a Jewish baptism bath that is dated to the 2nd temple period. The church is mentioned in the Book of the Demonstration, attributed to Eutychius of Alexandria (940): The church of Bayt Zakariya in the district of Aelia bears witness to the visit of Mary to her kinswoman Elizabeth.
The church has been in the hands of the Franciscans since 1674. In 1941--1942 they conducted excavations in the area immediately west of the church and the adjoining monastery. Several rock-cut chambers and graves were found, as well as wine presses with mosaic floors and small chapels with mosaic tiling. The southern rock-cut chamber contained pottery of a type found elsewhere in Jerusalem, probably from the first century CE.[14]
The other is an Eastern Orthodox church built in 1894, also on the remnants of an ancient church

VIdoe Tour to the Church of Saint John the Baptist (Ein Karem) Jerusalem
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The Church of Saint John the Baptist is located in a small and pastoral village outside Jerusalem. The Church marks the home in which John the Baptist was born to Elizabeth and Zecharia
Now let's enter the Church courtyard. Here on the wall there are stone tablets with the word of the Prayer known as the Benedictus (Latin for blessed) translated into 31 languages. This is the payer that Zechariah prayed as thanksgiving to god for the birth of his son.
The current church was built in 1674 and incorporates the ruins of earlier churches as we can see in this closed area. Here at the entrance to the church you can see a section of a byzantine mosaic floor bearing the Greek inscription Hail martyrs of God commemorating the children Herod's soldiers murdered in their search for the newborn king.
Now let's have a closer look at the main hall features - the principle altar is dedicated to John the Baptist. Above the Altar a representation of Mary wearing a blue cloak dominates the sanctuary. To her left is a status of Zacharias dressed in priestly robes and to her right a sculpture of Elizabeth. Below them is a status of John the Baptist.
At the left side of the main apse, is a crypt leading to a small cavern where according to Christian tradition John the Baptist was born. The Arch above the entrance bears the opening line of Zacharias' prayer of Thanksgiving -- Benedictus Dominus Deus Israel. The painting above the opening depicts John baptizing Jesus while the holy spirit looks over them like a dove. The exact spot where John was born is under the unadorned altar and it is marked by a marble star.
To the right of the main apse, a painting attributed to El Greco, a famous Greek born Spanish painter, hangs behind an ornate, wrought iron door. The Painting envisages Elizabeth's meeting with Mary while Zechariah is watching over Elizabeth's shoulder.
The main funding for rebuilding this church, and then for renovating it in the 19th century, was given by the Spanish royal family. This is why when you cross the threshold of the church you get the sense of being transported back to medieval Spain: the blue glazed tiles, the painting and art work made by Spanish artists, and even the Spanish royal coat-of-arms.
Church of the Visitation Ein Karem Jerusalem
A TOUR to the Church of the Visitation Ein Karem Jerusalem.
Today we are visiting the Church of the Visitation which marks the place were Mary, Mother of Jesus, had met her relative Elizabeth after the angel Gabriel revealed himself to Mary and told her she was pregnant with the son of God, and that also Elizabeth is expecting a baby -- later known as John the Baptist.
Excited by the news of the two pregnancies, Mary hastened to her relative Elizabeth in Ein Kerem, which is located south west to Jerusalem and is also known as the city of Judah in the New Testament.
According to Christian tradition, the site of the Church of the Visitation was a summer home where Elizabeth and her husband Zacharias resided so that Elizabeth could conceal her pregnancy with John. And not their house where John was born where today stands the Church of St. John the Baptist
Now let's examine the entrance to the Church. Here are small bronze statues representing Zacharias and Elizabeth at the entrance to their home. Some say these statues also represent Abraham and Sara who had a son at a very old age, also after being visited by angles.
Right after the entrance is a sculpture depicting the slim figures of Elizabeth and Mary. During that meeting Elizabeth felt that john bowed to Jesus while they are both in their mother's womb, and called Mary mother of my lord. In response Mary responded with a prayer of thanksgiving that became a part of Christian Liturgy. The Words of this prayer the Magnificat written on these walls in 58 languages... [הפסקה קצרה בקריינות]....... and here the prayer title embedded in the floor of the gate.
The façade of the Church is adorned with an impressive mosaic, portraying Mary on her way from Nazareth to Ein Kerem as it is described by Luke And Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste into a city of Judah
The church has two chapels on different levels. Our tour begins in the lower one.
The lower level of ancient churches is often used as a burial place, but here the cave is designed under the tradition that this site was Zachariaa and Elizabeth's summer home.
Over there is the altar of this chapel and above it are impressive frescoes featuring realistic scenes from the lives of Elizabeth and Zacharias.
Here is a portrayal of Elizabeth's meeting with Mary. To the left, Zecharias the priest is seen preparing incense in the Temple and the fresco to the right depicts roman soldiers about to kill babies by the order of King Herod after he was told about the sign in the skies over Bethlehem marking the birth of a new king.
At the left of this fresco we see an angel directing Elizabeth to hide John in a narrow crack that miraculously opened up in the mountainside. Here beneath the painting is the Rock of Hiding, said to be the rock that covered the crack where Elizabeth hid John.
Now let's go to the upper church.
This church is dedicated to women in general and to Mary in particular. At the rear of the church above the organ there is a wall painting of Mary and her son and the upper part of the apse is adorned with paintings whose central character is Mary. Above here, beneath the dove representing the Holy Spirit, angles sing to her and prepare to crown her with a wreath. Mary is pictured in a desert setting, dressed in red representing the earthly world and with a blue cloak representing the spiritual world -- together symbolizing Mary's resurrection after slipping into eternal slumber.
If we look in front of the aps we can see the remains of byzantine and Crusader churches, on which this church was built
The walls opposite the windows are decorated with five huge frescos depicting Mary's titles:
• Mother of God
• Mary Refuge of Sinner
• Advocate for the People of God - where Mary convinced her son to turn water into wine during the wedding at Cana
• Here is the title Help of Christians after a sea battle where the Christian alliance defeated the Turks after praying to Mary.
• And the fifth title is Mary free of the Original Sin as a consequence of the Immaculate Conception.
