Rock climbing and biking in Cuba's tobacco region | S02E09
After successfully sneaking into the interior of Cuba, we arrived in Viñales valley in the tobacco region of Cuba. We decided the best way to see the area was to rent bikes and look for the best rock climbing spots. As it turned out rock climbing was also illegal in Cuba, so we found ourselves participating in an illegal sport while on an illegal inland excursion. We had officially become outlaws! We also met a local tobacco farmer who taught us the secret to making Cuban cigars.

Shot on the GoPro and the Mavic 2 zoom. I crashed my drone into a mountain, but a fellow climber Gereth coordinated with some locals and retrieved the footage. A pretty incredible recovery

Moments: Rock Climbing in Vinãles - Cuba
Eli, Freek and Daan are three friends who came to Viñales with the purpose of climbing. With them, we learned that this is the focus of rock climbing activity in Cuba, and that most of the climbing routes are found in the areas of Mogote del Valle, El Palenque, and La Costanera. Climbing in Cuba started in 1999, when a group of US climbers arrived in Viñales charged with climbing ropes, quick-draws and harnesses, but also with drills and bolts. They wanted to work routes on the Mogotes, some with vertical walls of 300 metres. Nowadays there are over 250 routes prepared with bolts. Most of the routes are found precisely where we are now, the Mogote del Valle, which is not far from the village at all, we walked to come here. It is on the northern side of the valley, close to the Cueva de la Vaca, one of the many caves in the region, near the Finca Raul Reyes.
The three climbers were preparing to climb the wall known as Punta Repaso, at Ensenada de Raul and we stayed with them long enough to follow the procedure. They were confident without being overly experienced, so they took all the necessary precautions but advanced quickly. Technicality aside, they needed to worry about wasps, mosquito bites and possibly the guao plant (like poison ivy), that causes harsh rash and itching. They climbed and descended without problems. They had a few more days in Cuba, and wanted to climb as many walls as possible. After their holiday was over, they returned home without their climbing material, because, like many other foreign climbers, they offered their material to local climbers who do not manage to find climbing gear in Cuba.
Our visit in Viñales gave us the impression that the region is becoming the outdoor mecca of Cuba. There are unique hiking opportunities through the Mogotes, as well as horse riding and climbing. And with its all lively nightlife, it is not surprising that the town is attracting a crowd of travellers looking for adventurous, open-air activities.
Big thank you to the 3 awesome climbers Eli Francovich, Freek Borlee and Daan Smit! ♥︎

Go Climbing in Cuba with Solid Rock in 2015
SRCFC's 3rd Annual Climbing Trip to Cuba
We are pleased to announce our third annual climbing trip to Cuba. SRCFC’s trip to Cuba will center on participating and sponsoring their National Climbing Competition, which this year is where it all started, Valle de Vinales. The dates of the competition are Thursday, 1/29/15 to Monday, 2/2/15. We plan to arrive in Havana on January 26 and leave the country on February 3. There is flexibility for folks who want to arrive sooner or depart later. Under the USA trade embargo with Cuba it is illegal for Americans to travel to Cuba as tourists. However, a group under SRCFC non-profit status can legally travel there. This trip is open to all climbers. Those who aren't Christians are welcome as long as they are open to being exposed to Solid Rock's message. To get in the information loop on the 2015 Cuba Trip, please send an email to calvin@srcfc.org and include Cuba Trip in the subject line. We will travel through Mexico, so there will be opportunity to climb in Mexico on the way there. The cost for Cuba will only be about $2300 and add $500 for a 4 day optional outreach time in Mexico before going to Cuba.

Summit Pico Turquino, Cuba, Episode 155
Finally we get to go after the summit of Pico Turqqino, the highest mountain in Cuba. Located in NP Turquino, which is located within Sierra Maestra National Park. Yes a park within a park. The mountain is located in southeast Cuba and the trailhead was a bit of work to reach. The trek takes 2 days and must be done as a package with a government guide. We signed on at an InfoTur office a few weeks in advance. The price is fixed as are the package details. Think in terms of poor food and accommodation. This is two days of ruffing it in a jungle while steadily gaining altitude to reach a summit that needs some redesign. Check out the summit views in the video.

155 Summit Picco Turquino Video Details
In this video we visit the summit of Picco Turquino, the highest mountain in Cuba. Our objective is the summit. It is located in the NP Turquino.
From the park entrance we got a ride to the trailhead. The trek must be done with a government guide as part of a package. We signed onto our package at an InfoTur office. The price is fixed per person by the government.
The trail was well marked. There are a number of different trails in the park. Our first day’s objective was a forest camp 8 km from the trailhead.
The park is a tropical jungle so even in January it is hot and sweaty. Our route was mostly up hill with a steady increase in altitude.
Basecamp was very primitive, with uncomfortable bunks, no mosquito nets, bad food and limited fresh water even though it rains often. I won’t even discuss the toilet facilities.
After a poor night’s sleep and a bad breakfast, Cristina was not feeling very strong so at the 10km mark Cristina was very tired.
The summit was reached at long last.
Now for a 12 km return. Ouch.
Climbing - Viñales Cuba - Mucho Pumpito 5.10d - 2011
Years ago I read that this climb was one of the best 10Ds in the world and dreamed of climbing it. I got the chance in 2011. The holds are amazing, it's got 30ft of overhang, and a no hands knee bar rest. Just awesome!
Early on in the video the booming sound is artillery being tested in the distance. This was filmed on a GoPro2. It looks like I'm clipping the wrong direction the whole climb but that's just a the overhang and the camera fish eye capturing in a weird way.
