A circa due ore di macchina a nord della capitale L'Havana, percorrendo l'autopista si arriva facilmente fino a Pinar del Rio. Un paese ridente, con un'atmosfera di altri tempi, dove la gente riesce a vivere serenamente. Lo si legge nei loro volti, nel loro modo di comportarsi. Qui la gente è ancora più vera, non siamo nelle affollate mete turistiche dell'Isola o nella Capitale. Pinar del Río è una delle province più selvagge di Cuba. La provincia di Pinar del Río conta 730.626 abitanti su una superficie di 10.904,03 km² e il suo capoluogo è la città di Pinar del Río. In essa si trova la valle di Viñales, una cittadina famosa soprattutto per la paesaggistica che la circonda. L'elemento più caratteristico sono i Mogotes, collinette che emergono dalla pianura circostante.
