Polar Vortex Frozen 4K Footage of South Haven Lighthouse Must see! Pure Michigan Travel
Pure Michigan The Day after the Polar Vortex ,The South Haven South Pierhead Light is a lighthouse in Michigan, at the entrance to the Black River on Lake Michigan. The station was lit in 1872, and is still operational. The tower is a shortened version of the Muskegon South Pierhead Light, and replaced an 1872 wooden tower. The catwalk is original and still links the tower to shore: it is one of only four that survive in the State of Michigan.
History
The keeper’s house is on shore, 2-1⁄2 stories stall, wood with a hipped-roof. It was also built in 1872, and is located at 91 Michigan Avenue onshore, was transferred to the city for preservation in 2000. The Michigan Maritime Museum has renovated the keeper’s house as the Marialyce Canonie Great Lakes Research Library.

A Fifth order Fresnel lens manufactured by Parisian glass makers Barbier and Fenestre was installed in the lantern.
The current tower was designed by Eleventh District engineer James G. Warren.
The U.S. Lighthouse Service elected to tear down the wooden lighthouse and replace it. On October 6, 1903 ten workers arrived on the USLHS tender Hyacinth and began the project. It took a little more than a month to complete the project. According to The Daily Tribune (October 14, 1903) the lantern room was brought from Muskegon, Michigan where it had spent forty years on duty.
In 1913, the location was deemed unsatisfactory, and the cast iron lighthouse was moved 425 feet (130 m) to the end of the pie.
NEW STEEL LIGHTHOUSE COMMENCED TO-DAY
A crew of ten men in the employ of the Light House service, arrived this morning, from Muskegon, via the Pere Marquette and have begun work on the foundation of the new steel light house.
The Work is under the direction of Edward Guest, superintendent of the Ninth District, and the men cannot say when the work will be completed.
A concrete foundation will be built from the water’s edge, and the stone is being thrown out for that purpose. The foundation will be the size of the present one, which is about twelve feet square, or a little more. It will require about two weeks time after which the men will do some work at Holland then return to complete the steel tower. It will probably be completed in four or five weeks.
The new tower will be the same height about 36 feet from the water.

Paris Bankhead drowns in Lake Michigan Near Beach Park, IL
After more than three hours of searching, divers recovered the body of a 20-year-old Waukegan man who drowned Friday afternoon at Zion's Illinois State Beach Park.
Paris Bankhead, who lived at the Whispering Oaks apartment complex on Dugdale Road, spent the day at the Lake Michigan beach with family when he decided to go for a swim with another individual, Beach Park Fire Lt. Tommy Hopkins said.
The pair were swimming back to shore in water about 15 feet deep when family noticed Bankhead appeared to be in distress and failed to surface, Hopkins said.
The Beach Park Fire Department responded to the scene at 4:21 p.m. and activated a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System third-level alarm that brought in 40 divers, 30 support personnel and sonar units.
Bankhead's body was recovered at 7:35 p.m. No resuscitation efforts were made at the scene, but he was transported to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan.
We were definitely in rescue mode at first and gave our best effort, Hopkins said. Time just wasn't on our side.
Divers reported that Bankhead was about 20 feet away from the shore when submerged by water.
Divers said the current wasn't horrible, but it's Lake Michigan and there's always some sort of current, Hopkins said.
Lake County Coroner Richard Keller said family has been notified and that an autopsy will be performed on Bankhead at some point this weekend to make sure there wasn't any trauma. There was no obvious evidence of trauma, Keller added.
In addition to assistance from 34 fire departments from Lake, Cook and Kenosha counties, at least five boats and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter were on the scene.
They combed a 100-yard section of the 31/2 mile beach near the State Beach Resort and Conference Center near Patomos Avenue.
The Lake County Coroner's Office and the Illinois Conservation Police are conducting an investigation.
