Fisherman's Wharf is a neighborhood and popular tourist attraction in San Francisco, California. It roughly encompasses the northern waterfront area of San Francisco from Ghirardelli Square or Van Ness Avenue east to Pier 35 or Kearny Street. The F Market streetcar runs through the area, the Powell-Hyde cable car lines runs to Aquatic Park, at the edge of Fisherman's Wharf, and the Powell-Mason cable car line runs a few blocks away.
San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf gets its name and neighborhood characteristics from the city's early days of the mid to later 1800s when Italian immigrant fishermen came to the city by the bay to take advantage of the influx of population due to the gold rush. One, Achille Paladini, found success wholesaling local fish as owner of the Paladini Fish Company, and came to be known as the Fish King. Most of the Italian immigrant fishermen settled in the North Beach area close to the wharf and fished for the local delicacies and the now famed Dungeness crab. From then until the present day it remained the home base of San Francisco's fishing fleet. Despite its redevelopment into a tourist attraction during the 1970s and 1980s, the area is still home to many active fishermen and their fleets.
In 2010, a $15 million development plan was proposed by city officials hoping to revitalize its appearance for tourists, and to reverse the area's downward trend in popularity among San Francisco residents, who have shunned the locale over the years.

Pluses:
location was excellent view of Alcatraz from the room was worth the extra money.
Location was fantastic. Couldn't be better. The game room for the kids was a blessing. The view from our room was very nice.
Great location, wonderful staff, fun experience with the pool table and games. Fire pits were wonderful! Bed was tremendously comfortable!
Minuses:
No Bar. Paper cups for the coffee machine.
I would have liked to not find dark hairs in my bed sheets or in the bathroom.
Some of the amenities of the room were a bit old. Refrigerator did not work and ironing board kept collapsing. Bathroom is a bit small for the price.

Fisherman's Wharf San Francisco Travel Guide | California Travel Tips
California Travel journalist Veronica Hill offers a guide to the best attractions in San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf in this episode of California Travel Tips.
There are dozens of things to do in Fisherman's Wharf. Take the San Francisco cable cars down to the Hyde Street Pier, where you can explore the Fisherman's wharf attractions, seafood restaurants and museums.
Most of the sights are located along Jefferson Street, which is where you'll find the historic San Francisco seafood restaurants and stands serving up the city's famous boiled crab and hot clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl.
If you're craving more of that fabulously chewy San Francisco sourdough, head over to Boudin Bakery in Fisherman's Wharf, where you can watch and talk to artisan breadmakers as they create their legendary sourdough loaves before your eyes.
Located on Pier 45, Musee Mecanique is a mechanical museum that's home to dozens of old-time penny arcade games, including some from San Francisco's historic Playland at the Beach.
On Hyde Street Pier, you'll find the flotilla of ships at the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park. Although the Pier is free, you can pay a fee to board these turn-of-the-century ships. Also along the waterfront, you can tour the USS Pampanito, which sank six ships during World War II.
Fisherman's Wharf is home to several daily San Francisco bay cruises, bike rentals and sightseeing tours. You can explore the city on a San Francisco Go Car, zip through Fisherman's Wharf by Segway, or join a cycling tour across the Golden Gate Bridge.
The Blue & Gold Fleet also departs here daily, offering excursions to popular destinations including Angel Island, Monterey and Carmel. Daily tours to Alcatraz depart from Alcatraz Cruises on Pier 33.
For a bit of touristy fun, head to Pier 39 — a shopping and restaurant complex filled with souvenir shops and the occasional live shows. Go ahead and succumb to its guilty pleasures, from a ride on the double-decker carousel, to glimpse at the barking California sea lions on K-dock. These playful pinnipeds arrived here in 1990, and have been a major crowd pleaser ever since. Although their numbers come and go throughout the year, there are always a few hanging out. Upstairs, Aquarium of the Bay offers a glimpse at more than 20,000 ocean creatures.
If you have a sweet tooth, don't miss Ghiradelli Square, where you can indulge in San Francisco's famous chocolate creations, or do a bit of shopping. Built in 1907, the Cannery is another good bet — where you'll find some adorable sidewalk cafes and boutiques.
If you're looking for San Francisco hotels near Fisherman's Wharf, book a room at the Radisson Fisherman's Wharf, Fairmont Heritage Place or The Argonaut. All three are just steps from Jefferson Street and the attractions of Fisherman's Wharf.
Tips: Parking in San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf is available across the street from Pier 39 in a large parking structure. You can find a map of Fisherman's Wharf on their official website at

Inside Fisherman's Wharf - San Francisco
One of the busiest and well known tourist attractions in the western United States, Fisherman's Wharf is best known for being the location of Pier 39, the Cannery Shopping Center, Ghirardelli Square, a Ripley's Believe it or Not museum, the Musée Mécanique, Wax Museum at Fisherman's Wharf, and the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.
Seafood restaurants are aplenty in the area. Some include the floating Forbes Island restaurant. at Pier 39 to stands that serve fresh seafood, most notably Dungeness crab and clam chowder served in a sourdough bread bowl. Some of the restaurants, including Fishermen's Grotto, Pompei's Grotto and Alioto's, go back for three generations of the same family ownership. Other restaurants include chains like Joe's Crab Shack and Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. The area also has an In-N-Out Burger; local business leaders said they opposed every other fast food chain except In-N-Out, because they wanted to maintain the flavor of family-owned, decades-old businesses in the area, with one saying locals would ordinarily be up in arms about a fast-food operation coming to Fisherman's Wharf, but the family-owned In-N-Out is different.[4]
Other attractions in Fisherman's Wharf area are the Hyde Street Pier (part of the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park), the USS Pampanito, a decommissioned World War II era submarine, and the Balclutha, a 19th-century cargo ship. Nearby Pier 45 has a chapel in memory of the Lost Fishermen of San Francisco and Northern California.
There is a sea lion colony next to Pier 39. They took-up residence months before the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989. The sea lions lie on wooden docks that were originally used for docking boats.
