Fly Fishing Zermatt
What is the most spectacular and beautiful destination for fly fishing? Try Zermatt Switzerland in view of the majestic Matterhorn. In a high alpine lake professional fly fishing guide Kirk Tinham has created the dream location for skilled fly fishing at it's best. Fly fishing is a hugely popular sport worldwide, however Alpine fishing has always been a relatively inaccessible activity. That is until now…
No matter if you’re a beginner or a seasoned trout hunter, Fly Fish Zermatt gives you the opportunity to book a tailor made private tour on this stunning Alpine lake for an unforgettable fly fishing experience.
There are two species of fish found in the lake: Trout and Char, of which we have Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Arctic Char and Lake Trout (which despite the name is also from the Char family). The fish live a wild life in this lake and no artificial food is provided. They hunt for their prey which keeps them very fit and healthy and they also reproduce naturally. The cold, well-oxygenated water produces beautiful pure wild fish, and when caught these “homegrown” fish are recognisable from their amazing colours and smaller size.
Our privately owned tranquil mountain lake is situated at 2500m and nestled in a deep valley enclosed between steeply scarped mountains, dominated by the huge and gracefully curved pyramid of the Matterhorn.
The lake its self is approximately 250m long, 50m wide and 5m deep in the centre. There are no trees around the lake which makes it ideal to learn to cast a fly line or perfect your long casts. The lake has its own diverse ecosystem which you will learn more about on your tour and this will really aid you in catching your own mountain trout.
In the images above you can see a small selection of the natural trout food that exists in and around the lake. We do not feed the fish any artificial pellets which means they actively search for their prey and live a very wild life. This is noticeable in the quality of the trout, both in the fight while playing the fish and the superb taste when they are prepared by the restaurant for us.
Sitting at the foot of a beautiful glacier, natural glacier water flows through mountains and into the lake, exiting via a small waterfall. The water is extremely pure and crystal clear, making it easy to see up to two meters deep which is perfect for stalking these mountain Trout. Despite the sometimes very warm air temperatures on a nice summer’s day, the water temperature remains very cold which increases the oxygen levels in the water and results in very healthy, strong fighting fish.

Zermatt-Matterhorn: Fly fishing
Fly fishing is a sport popular throughout the world and also has a passionate following in Switzerland. Fly fishing is a method of angling, different in that the bait, known as a fly, is too light to be cast. For this reason, the load for casting is provided by the weight of the special fishing line. This requires a distinctive casting technique and a special fishing rod and reel. The chance of fly fishing in the Alps is an exceptional opportunity as it is very seldom permitted. Whether for tourist or local inhabitant, beginner or expert -- FlyFish Zermatt offers the chance of a memorable experience in the middle of the breathtaking Swiss mountain world. We offer you a wide range of fishing tours to one of Europe's most stunning Alpine lakes.

The Chase | Fly Fishing Switzerland in Spring
ExpediTom and friends went fly fishing in a remote Jura mountain stream in Switzerland. Apart from magnificent rural scenery, the two lads experienced an unexpected encounter, which ended in a chase. This occurence made us realize what we truly chased and convinced ExpediTom to formulate a fishing codex:

The pedestrian streets are narrow and lined with shops, restaurants, hotels and inns near the rail station. Homes and houses are scattered throughout, some perched on the lower edge of the mountains.
For a very long time Switzerland and the Alps have been among the most beautiful regions, sought by millions of tourists from all parts of the world. They display the greatest mountains and valleys in their grandest form and have a special charm that is most seductive.
Zermatt is considered Switzerland's most popular visitor destination getting about 2 million visitors a year. So depending on the time of day or the season, this village could get pretty crowded. You might want to come in the shoulder season. Month of May is perfect, if it's late May, especially. Early May you might run into snow on the trails and that gets in the way of your hiking. Late May and early September are pretty much the perfect times to be here.
Zermatt is well-equipped to handle a large number of visitors they get, with 130 hotels in the main village area, not to mention bed-and-breakfasts and other hotels in nearby towns. Many people just come for the day, you can arrive by train in the morning, walk around, although that's not recommended. There's so much to see and do in Zermatt you really want to spend a couple of nights – at least two or even three nights would be very nice. They have got 70 ski lifts if you're a skier, especially in the wintertime they're all functioning. In the summer as we have seen up on the Klein Matterhorn you can ski all year round. And naturally this is heaven for serious rock climbers there. You'll see people with their ropes and spikes in pickaxes walking down the main lane heading for the hills.
