France: Pro-Palestinian protesters rally against Jerusalem Square inauguration

Pro-Palestinian activists protested against the visit of the Mayor of Jerusalem Moshe Leon on the occasion of naming of one Parisian square 'Jerusalem Square' in Paris on Sunday.
The protesters exhibited numerous Palestinian flags and banners, as well as placards denouncing the Mayor of Paris Annie Hidalgo, who the protesters claim was the one that invited Leon.
Olivia Zemor, President of CAPJPO-Europalestine, said that the renaming of the square is not a problem in itself, rather that Hidalgo invited Leon, who according to Zemor, is a racist, an ex-Zionist who wants to get rid of all the Palestinians and who spends his time chasing them from East Jerusalem.
Nicolas Shahshahani, spokesperson of CAPJPO-Europalestine, said, Mrs. Hidalgo follows the footsteps of Donald Trump, the fascist who recently gave Israel additional pledges.
A representative of the French Jewish Union for Peace denounced the decision, adding that it serves to 'restore Israel's image'. This inauguration of this square 'Jerusalem' is of the same nature as the displacement of the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, she said.

Christmas at the YMCA in Jerusalem
HOLY LAND UNCOVERED | Christmas has arrived and is filling the air in parts of Jerusalem. Look no further for traditional Christmas spirit than the YMCA in Jerusalem. Our Uri Shapira and Shleby Weiner have the story.
Story:
Pilgrims from across the world gathered to celebrate Christmas Eve in Bethlehem, queuing to see the grotto where Jesus is believed to have been born.
Christmas celebrations were also underway in Nazareth — largest Arab city in Israel — where Christians believe the Archangel Gabriel announced Jesus' birth to Mary and where they believe his childhood home was located.
Hundreds of Palestinian scouts came from across the West Bank to take part in the annual parade through Bethlehem's Manger Square, across from the Church of the Nativity, built atop the traditional site of Jesus's birth.
Crowds, some wearing Santa hats or holding balloons, looked on at the square decked out with a giant Christmas tree and a manger as carols in Arabic played through speakers.
The Catholic archbishop for the Holy Land Pierbattista Pizzaballa was due to arrive in Bethlehem the afternoon before leading the city's annual midnight mass.Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was among dignitaries due to attend the mass.
This year, visitors are able to view the Church of the Nativity's newly restored mosaics after they were recently cleaned and repaired in a major project.
Bethlehem is expecting more tourists expected this Christmas than have visited the Biblical city in years, with the boost attributed primarily to a decrease in violence in Jerusalem and the West Bank.
Israel is also enjoying record tourism figures and many visitors take day trips to Bethlehem and other West Bank sites from Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and elsewhere in the Jewish state.
'It's a great opportunity to be in such a symbolic location for Christmas,' said Lea Gudel, a 21-year-old French exchange student studying in Jerusalem and who was in Manger Square on Monday morning.
Tourism in the Palestinian territories suffered a major blow following a fury of demonstrations and clashes sparked by a controversial announcement by President Donald Trump recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital last December, putting a damper on Christmas celebrations.
Palestinian tourism officials and hotel operators have reported their strongest season in years.
'This year is much more calm, much better than last year,' said Abeer Nasser, a Palestinian from the nearby town of Beit Sahour who was with her son and daughter and was planning to attend midnight mass.
'Every year I feel more in the mood to celebrate despite the political situation,' he added. On Sunday, Palestinian protesters — some are dressed as Santa Claus — carried Palestinian flags and chanted anti-Israel slogans during a demonstration outside an Israeli checkpoint in Bethlehem.
Palestinian Christians make up approximately two percent of the predominantly Muslim population of the West Bank and east Jerusalem.

JERUSALEM – Over 1,000 people took part in a solidarity rally for the French
people organized by the Jerusalem municipality. The rally was held today, January
11, at the city council hall. Officials expressed support by the city of Jerusalem, for
the French people and the Jewish community in France, in light of last weekend's
horrific terror attacks.
The rally began with a moment of silence, in tribute of the victims that lost their lives
during last weekend's terror attacks. During the moment of silence, hundreds of signs
were raised, reading: Je Suis Charlie (I am Charlie), Israel is Charlie and Je Suis
Juif de France, I am Jewish and from France.
Mayor Barkat commented that the terror attack which struck Paris last weekend is an
attack on all of us… the entire world can now understand, what we have endured here
in Jerusalem and in Israel, murderous terror which is motivated by radical Islam.
Barkat called Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo and expressed his condolences on behalf
of the residents of Jerusalem. Barkat told Hidalgo: The people of Jerusalem
understand and share your pain. We must not let terror pay-off. Give strength to the
residents of Paris, this strength will defeat terror.”
The Jerusalem municipality has announced its intention to hang a huge sign reading in
French and English, Jerusalem est Charlie, Jerusalem Hugs Paris, in central
Jerusalem's Paris square. In addition, the Jerusalem municipality will hang 1,500
French flags on major roads throughout the city.
Barkat has instructed the Jerusalem municipality to create a special committee, which
will help any Jewish citizen of France who wishes to immigrate to Israel. Regarding
the subject, Barkat said: I've heard about the feelings of doubt within the Jewish
community in France, and I wish to say to my brothers and sisters in France: the gates
of Zion are open and the entire Jewish people is at your side.

Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and its largest city in both population and area, with 732,100 residents in an area of 125.1 square kilometres (48.3 sq mi) if disputed East Jerusalem is included. Located in the Judean Mountains, between the Mediterranean Sea and the northern tip of the Dead Sea, modern Jerusalem has grown up outside the Old City.
The city has a history that goes back to the 4th millennium BCE, making it one of the oldest cities in the world. Jerusalem has been the holiest city in Judaism and the spiritual center of the Jewish people since the 10th century BCE, contains a number of significant ancient Christian sites, and is considered the third-holiest city in Islam.Despite having an area of only 0.9 square kilometer (0.35 square mile), the Old City is home to sites of key religious importance, among them the Temple Mount, the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque. The old walled city, a World Heritage site, has been traditionally divided into four quarters, although the names used today — the Armenian, Christian, Jewish, and Muslim Quarters — were introduced in the early 19th century. The Old City was nominated for inclusion on the List of World Heritage Sites in danger by Jordan in 1982. In the course of its history, Jerusalem has been destroyed twice, besieged 23 times, attacked 52 times, and captured and recaptured 44 times.
Today, the status of Jerusalem remains one of the core issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israel's annexation of East Jerusalem has been repeatedly condemned by the United Nations and related bodies,[12][13] and Palestinians foresee East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state. In the wake of United Nations Security Council Resolution 478 (passed in 1980), most foreign embassies moved out of Jerusalem.

Icing down Jerusalem
The capital city's first Ice Festival was a cool introduction to spring for the thousands of tourists and Israelis who donned parkas in April.
The first Jerusalem Ice Festival, running through March and April, took 30 expert sculptors from Harbin, China, two months to create.
The idea of an ice festival in the Middle East is definitely out of the box, and its creators wanted it to make a splash.
This is the biggest indoor ice festival in the world, says producer Sharon Shalev. We brought 7,000 blocks of ice, says Shalev. Three kinds: crystallized, white ice and color ice.
The sculptures were set up in a 1,500-square-meter space near Jerusalem's historic old train station, and kept at a steady minus-10 degrees Centigrade. Parkas were handed out to those who bought tickets.
The exhibit proved so popular with Israelis and Passover and Easter tourists that some visitors had to be turned away during the peak days of the holiday.
