Fukui Castle Ruins ( 福井城址 )

First built in 1606, the area around Fukui Castle once flourished due to the Echizen-Matsudaira clan. At the time, the famous castle had a height of 37m and a castle tower with four levels and five floors, but it was burned down in a great fire. Currently, the prefectural government offices are built on the site with the surviving stone walls and moat showing what it was like back in the day.

Visiting Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins -Bhutanese Family in Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture-
I visited Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins in Fukui City with Mr. Ugyen Dorji’s family from Bhutan.
Mr. Ugyen Dorji is studying at University of Fukui as a teacher trainee from Bhutan since around October of 2017. And the end of March of 2018, his family arrived in Japan as well.
The Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins is surrounded by beautiful nature, so the visitors can enjoy the great view, and learn about the history at the time.
The restored town was rebuilt with some of the archaeological remains found there and it was rebuilt to look like the old town. The visitors can feel as if they were in the Warring States Period.
Mr. Ugyen Dorji’s wife and sister tried the Warring States Period’s style kimono dressing experience. They were very excited to wear the kimono for the first time ever.
They said that the kimono which they wore were similar to traditional Bhutanese clothing for men called “Gho”.

Asakura Light Festival | Experience Fukui
A short and simple video of my adventure volunteering at the Asakura Light festival in Echizen, Fukui.
This festival takes places every year near the end of August after Obon holiday festivities. I was lucky enough to participate in the event as a volunteer and wear my very first Kimono!

The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum (福井県立恐竜博物館 Fukui Ken-ritsu Kyōryū Hakubutsukan), located in Katsuyama, Fukui, Japan, is one of the leading dinosaur museums in Asia that renowned for its exhibits of fossil specimens of dinosaurs and paleontological research.
It is sited in the Nagaoyama Park (Katsuyama Dinosaur Forest Park) near the Kitadani Dionosaur Quarry that the Lower Cretaceous Kitadani Formation of the Tetori Group is cropped out and a large number of dinosaur remains including Fukuiraptor kitadaniensis, Fukuisaurus tetoriensis are found and excavated.

This June, Fukui Prefecture will be hosting the 2010 Japan APEC Energy Ministerial Meeting, which the energy ministers from 21 countries and regions, mainly from Asia Pacific, will be gathering to discuss global warming issues and energy conservation measures. In order to cover the prefectural approach to centralization of energy R&D/human resources in Asia, 14 journalists from the U.K., Taiwan, Germany, Vietnam, Korea, China, Bangladesh, France, Italy, and the UAE took part in the press tour.
The participating journalists visited the prefectural energy R&D hub, Wakasa Wan Energy Research Center, and Monju, the prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR), which is now set for restart after a gap of 15 years. They also heard from Governor Issei Nishikawa about the Energy R&D Centralization Plan as well as the prefectural industry, food and other items.
On the second day, the group of journalists learned about Japanese candles by visiting the historical Japanese candle maker, Kodaikokuya, which started business in the center of Fukui City in 1865. Mr. Ryuichiro Otsu, the executive director and seventh generation of Kodaikokuya, explained his attempts to make new-style Japanese candles while preserving the identity of tradition, and he gave the journalists a guided factory tour. At the Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins, which are the ruins of the castle town of the 16th century, the journalists heard about the excavation research which started in 1967 and its history. The journalists also enjoyed the local traditional dishes called Asakura Zen which was served by the group of local housewives who are trying to preserve the traditional recipe.
At the end of the tour they made quick visits to Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, the leading-edge of dinosaur research in East Asia, and Maruoka Castle, which is famous as the oldest standing castle in Japan.
