This event is part of the Guernsey Heritage Festival 2014
During the event, British & German soldiers were played by actors & the Guernsey Museum Service wishes to stress that none sympathise with the actions or policies of the Nazi party. By learning the lessons of history, we can avoid repeating mistakes of the past. #LivingHistory

SINK THE BISMARCK: Short Summary - The World War II story of the British Navy's effort to defeat Nazi Germany's most powerful warship.
SINK THE BISMARCK: Full Synopsis - In 1941 Captain Jonathan Shepard takes over as Director of Operations at naval headquarters in London just as they receive reports that the Bismarck, the pride of the German navy, is going out to sea in the North Atlantic. Shepard argues in favor of moving as many ships as possible to the area to find her. In their first encounter with the Bismarck, the Royal Navy loses HMS Hood, the largest ship in the fleet while HMS Prince of Wales is severely damaged. Shepard then transfers ships from the Mediterranean fleet to go after Bismarck; they include the aircraft carrier Ark Royal on which his son Tom is serving as an aircraft gunner. Damaged in a second encounter, the Bismarck heads for Brest on the French coast and the safety of German coastal defenses and air cover. The only ship in range is the Ark Royal but in their first air sortie, they inadvertently attack HMS Sheffield when they mistake it for the Bismarck. In the second air sortie, they damage the Bismarck sufficiently to allow the surface fleet to catch up to her and sink her.

Fishing Vessel hits large Sailing Vessel in Good Visibility 20/8/2010
Here is the press release from this incident.
At a hearing 30/05/2011 at Southampton Magistrates the Officer of the Watch of a fishing vessel pleaded guilty to one safety charge brought under Section 58 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995. He was fined £1,700 plus costs of £6,435.
On the 20th August 2010 the Andrea had finished fishing and was returning to port in the Netherlands. The skipper and rest of the crew were below leaving Jan Baarssen alone on the bridge in sole charge of the vessel. The Andrea is a 36.5 metre beam trawler registered in the UK but is based in the Netherlands
The Alexander von Humboldt was returning to Germany after a training voyage with a crew of fifty nine (59) consisting of thirty three (33) trainees and twenty six (26) full time crew. She is a large three masted sail training vessel registered in Germany.
The visibility on the day was good (10 Km +), wind was southerly force 5-6 with weather being grey and overcast.
During the afternoon of the 20th August 2011 the Alexander von Humboldt detected the Andrea on a steady bearing on its port side. The Andrea was not fishing and was the give way vessel. The Alexander von Humboldt started sounding its whistle. The Andrea failed to give way. The Alexander von Humboldt also tried to contact the Andrea by VHF radio but had no response. The Andrea claims to have gone hard to starboard and when within 15-20 metres of the Alex von Humboldt, the Andrea was seen to go full astern. The Andrea struck the port quarter of the Alexander von Humboldt. It was a fairly low speed collision.
Apart from some scratched paintwork, the Andrea was undamaged.
The Alexander von Humboldt was lucky to suffer only some dented shell plating with associated damage to internal wooden bulkheads and deck planking together with bent or buckled handrails. It was very fortunate that no harm came to the crew of the Alexander von Humboldt and that its rigging and watertight integrity remained intact.
Mr Jan Baarssen, 51, of Urk, Netherlands pleaded guilty for conduct endangering ships or persons. He was finerd£1,700 plus costs of £6,435
In passing sentence the Magistrates stated that it was fortunate that they were no injuries especially among the sail training crew.
Mr David Fuller O.B.E., Principal Fishing Vessel Surveyor for the Eastern Region of the MCA stated:This is yet another incident occurring on the return of a fishing vessel to harbour. Fishermen are reminded of the requirement to keep a good lookout at all times. Also that that the trip is not over until the vessel is safely tied up in port.
We would like to thank the German and Netherlands Police for their assistance in this matter

Guernsey Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
Guernsey is the second largest of the Channel Islands. Just twenty-five square miles in area, this pocket-sized British Crown dependency is big on sunshine, serenity and history.
St. Peter Port, is one of Europe’s prettiest harbor towns. Standing guard over the capital for over 800 years is Castle Cornet, which houses some of the island’s finest museums.
Continue your history lesson back in town, at the Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery.
Just outside in Candie Gardens, stands a tribute to the literary giant, Victor Hugo, who fell under Guernsey’s spell in the 19th century.
Follow coastal paths, which pass coastal forts like Clarence Battery and sheltered beaches like Petit Bot Bay. While Guernsey’s coastline often steals the show, you’ll find plenty to explore inland too, such as the nature trails and floral displays of Saumarez Park and Sausmarez Manor.
Step into the damp netherworld of the German Underground Hospital, a maze of tunnels hewn from solid rock during World War Two. On the outskirts of St Peter Port, a former U-Boat fuel depot houses the La Vallette Underground Military Museum.
After the war, German equipment littered the island. The German Occupation Museum displays an incredible array of this wartime memorabilia, and pays tribute to the resourceful islanders who endured the years of occupation.
After spending a few hours wandering through the shadows of war, stepping back into the island’s sea air and sunshine is all more the sweeter.

The Bombing of Darwin was a battle in the Pacific war during World War II. It occurred on Darwin, Northern of Australia, on 19 February 1942. Allied aircraft replacements could reach Southeast Asia only by ship or by an air bridge in which Darwin was a vital link. The Japanese therefore acted to deny the Allies the use of Darwin by launching a massive carrier raid against the port on 19 February 1942. Some 190 aircraft from four of Nagumo's carriers and another 54 land-based bombers based in the Netherlands East Indies participated in the Raid.
In this video, you will find an animated map of the details of invasion operation by the Japanese empire and The Allied defence. The Bombing of Darwin is often less mentioned in the history book and one of the forgotten battles in Pacific Theather.

SUMMARY
=======
The German occupation of the Channel Islands lasted for most of the Second World War, from 30 June 1940 until their liberation on 9 May 1945. The Bailiwick of Jersey and Bailiwick of Guernsey are two British Crown dependencies in the English Channel, near the coast of Normandy. The Channel Islands were the only part of the British Isles to be occupied by the Wehrmacht (German Armed Forces) during the war.
Anticipating a swift victory over Britain, the occupiers experimented by using a very gentle approach that set the theme for the next five years. The island authorities adopted a similar attitude, giving rise to accusations of collaboration. However, as time progressed the situation grew gradually worse, ending in near starvation for both occupied and occupiers during the winter of 1944–45.
