We go by train, boat, on foot and funicolare to show you many great sites including Swiss Miniatur, with small models of Swiss buildings in a park setting, and the Alprose chocolate factory.
The historic center of Lugano is famous for arcades that line both sides of the street forming covered sidewalk areas with a calm and sheltered environment, protecting you from the rain and sun.
This style of columns and arches is reminiscent of Italian architecture -- after all, we are right next to Italy here in Lugano and you also see that feeling of Italy in the piazza, the big open square. The language is Italian and so is much of the lifestyle here in Ticino, which enjoys a magical blend of two cultures, with Swiss efficiency and Italian charm.
You will love how well the pedestrian zone works – peaceful streets with people walking here and there. It is so friendly and sociable, makes for a great atmosphere.
We really enjoyed stopping at this famous gourmet food shop, Gabbani, in business here since 1937 and they've really branched out – they've got a wine shop, a cheese shop, and they even run a small hotel that's ranked number three on Trip Advisor.
This area is also world famous for its chocolates. In fact there's a chocolate factory just outside the city we visit, the Alprose, and you will see how they make their chocolates.
Another feature that makes Lugano so attractive are the hillside streets. It's just so much more interesting than being in a flatland town. They've got staircase streets, they've got gently sloping streets, and it's all for pedestrians. It's a small part of town. It's a section which is goes up the hill alongside the funicular, but it really is a lot of fun to check it out. Some of the restaurants put tables out on the staircase streets. That would be a fine place to eat on a nice day. And even though it's a little bit of work to walk up the steps, it's a very popular retail center.
It's a kind of backbeat neighborhood with some quirky little boutiques and unique shops and artists and craftspeople. You'll run into some real characters here. Custom-made clothing and jewelry a whole variety of fun things to look at.
It's the kind of neighborhood that would be very easy to mess, or you might be easily discouraged if you get to the foot of one of those hills and look up and think oh, no, I don't want to walk up that hill. But really it's not difficult at all. The slope is very gradual – you walk up, you walk down.
We’re also going to take you on a scenic boat ride from Lugano to Gandria, just five miles away. On a day like this it's perfect to sit up on the outdoor deck, or you could sit down below inside. It's very comfortable there as well. We're traveling in the month of May in Switzerland and it's warm and sunny especially because we're in the southern part of the country.
Gandria is truly a magical little village, clinging to the hillside along the shores of Lake Lugano. We will be getting off here and taking a little stroll through the village and finding it is a pedestrian zone. Cars are not allowed in the village itself because the lanes are just much too narrow and steep.
As soon as you get off the boat you can start exploring as we wind our way around these narrow lanes, and bends and turns and twists and discovering – always fun to explore someplace new for the first time.
This is part of our big series of movies about Switzerland taking you to most of the great places. We will bring you to Lucerne and up to Mount Titlis, Mount Rigi, over to Interlaken, up to the Jungfrau. We will see the Shilthorn, Lauterbrunnen Valley, Trummelbach Falls, Grindelwald, Bern, then on to Zermatt, the Matterhorn, yes we will have a look at the Gornergrat, up the Sunnegga, do some hiking, show you the village then on down to Lugano and Locarno in the southern part of Switzerland, the Ticino we also take you to the great city of Zürich. Look for them in our Swiss collection.
Cycling Switzerland Part 2.1 (RaD Ep 6): Astano (Lugano) to Faido
In the next installment of our trip we head out from Astano, Switzerland (where we spent time with our good friend and doing some vid work) to take on the Gotthard Pass continuing on Swiss Bike Route 3.
Climbing up to 2,108 meters (about 7,000 ft) on the famous Tremola road, this vid is Part 1 of 2 as we knew we'd need to break up the climb!
We barely made it to the Gottardo Campsite...haha. Go legs, go!

Gotthard Base Tunnel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) is a railway tunnel beneath the Alps in Switzerland. With a route length of 57 km (35.4 mi) and a total of 151.84 km (94.3 mi) of tunnels, shafts and passages, it is the world's longest rail tunnel, surpassing the undersea Seikan Tunnel in Japan.
The project consists of two single track tunnels. It is part of the AlpTransit project, also known as the New Railway Link through the Alps (NRLA), which also includes the Lötschberg Base Tunnel between the cantons of Bern and Valais. It bypasses the 19th century Gotthardbahn, a winding mountain route across the Saint-Gotthard Massif, and establishes a direct route usable by high-speed rail and heavy freight trains. After 64 percent of Swiss voters accepted the AlpTransit project in a 1992 referendum, construction of the tunnel began in 1996. Boring operations in the eastern tunnel were completed on 15 October 2010 in a cut-through ceremony broadcast live on Swiss TV. When it opens for traffic in late 2017, the tunnel will cut the 3.5-hour travel time from Zürich to Milan by an hour and from Zürich to Lugano to 1 hour 40 minutes.
The two portals are near the villages of Erstfeld, Uri and Bodio, Ticino. Nearby are two other St. Gotthard Tunnels: the 1881 Gotthard Rail Tunnel and the 1980 Gotthard Road Tunnel.
Background
The route over Gotthard Pass (or one of its tunnels) is one of the most important passages through the Alps on the north-south axis in Europe. Traffic has increased more than tenfold since 1980 and the existing road and rail tunnels are at their limits. To provide a faster and flatter passage through the Swiss Alps, the tunnel cuts through the Gotthard massif 600 m (1,969 ft) below the existing railway tunnel. On the current track, the Gotthardbahn, only trains up to 1,400 t (1,543 ST; 1,378 LT) when using two locomotives or up to 1,700 t (1,874 ST; 1,673 LT) with an additional bank engine at the end of the train are able to pass through the narrow mountain valleys and through spiral tunnels climbing up to the portals of the old tunnel at a height of 1,100 m (3,609 ft) above sea level.
When completed, standard freight trains of up to 4,000 t (4,409 ST; 3,937 LT) will be able to pass this natural barrier. Because of ever increasing international truck traffic, the Swiss voted in February 1994 for a shift in transportation policy (Traffic Transfer Act, enacted in October 1999). The goal of both the laws (and the goal of the GBT, which is one of the means by which the law will achieve its objective) is to transport trucks, trailers and freight containers from southern Germany to northern Italy and back by train to relieve the already overused roads (intermodal freight transport and so-called rolling highway where the entire truck is transported) and to meet the political requirement of shifting as much tonnage as possible from truck transport to train transport, as required by the 'Alpine Protection Act' of 1994. Passenger trains will be able to travel as fast as 250 km/h (155.3 mph) through the new tunnels, reducing travel times for trans-alpine train trips by 50 minutes -- and by one hour once the adjacent Zimmerberg and Ceneri Base Tunnels are completed.

America and Europe crush Switzerland?
The US dollar rose against the Swiss franc today after the central bank of Switzerland's announced it would be capping their exchange rate. Swiss National Bank has fixed its exchange rate at 1.20 Swiss francs per euro. The SNB said it would purchase an unlimited amount of euros regardless of the risk. The SNB hopes its actions will stabilize the currency for the next few months. Joe Weisenthal, deputy editor of Business Insider, explains why the SNB would go to such extreme measures.

Zurich, Switzerland part 2: Bahnhofstrasse, trams, museums, Zug
Continuing our in-depth look at Zürich, Switzerland focusing on the modern side of the city showing you the great boulevard, the Bahnhofstrasse lined with thriving, modern retail frontage from end to end, and some of Zürich's other shopping lanes.
Please subscribe:
We will go out on a lake boat ride, take you on an excursion to a nearby town, visit the main museums, and generally show you around.
Bahnhofstrasse is the pride of modern Zurich, and counts as the one and only Boulevard of the city. It is famous for being one of the most exclusive and expensive shopping streets in the world. Here you can get anything from diamond rings to chocolate to fur coats. About 140 stores are located along it. A study In 2011 named the Bahnhofstrasse the most expensive commercial rent for retail property in Europe. We'll take you up and down the full length of Bahnhofstrasse on foot and in the tram.
By the way the reason that we can present such a long and comprehensive program about Zürich is that it was filmed during 10 visits to Zürich in recent years.
Zürich’s Hauptbahnhof is the busiest train station in the world as measured by total number of daily trains, but the Hauptbahnhof is more than just a train station – it's like a small town in itself. There are many restaurants and bars and cafes and the lower level has got a vast shopping mall, and it is really popular because these stores are open at night and on Sundays when many of these stores in the city are closed. You'll find a whole variety of shops available here, not just travel items, luggage stores, but clothing stores and sundries, there is the sandwich shops, there is the stationary places, all kinds of ways to spend your money. If you're here towards the end of September you might get lucky and run into the Oktoberfest celebration. These are Swiss, they also like their beer and their lederhosen and their sausages, very similar to Munich in southern Germany in Bavaria. It's Oktoberfest time with some great Swiss beer, there's some music in the air, and a lot of fun. Everybody is very friendly here and the whole station turns into one big party scene.
There are nearly 300 hotels in Zürich so you have a wide range of choice from the cheapest hostel up to a five-star deluxe hotel like the hotels Savoy Bauer en Ville. It's right on Paradeplatz and Bahnhofstrasse – a very refined and expensive place to stay, with prices generally above €500. Perhaps four-star luxury is more suitable for you and definitely less expensive. We enjoyed the St. Gotthard Hotel. It's right on the Bahnhofstrasse just one block from the train station, making access about the best in town.
For visitors who have any interest whatsoever in art, it's worth walking a few blocks to the south edge of the old town to visit Zürich's art museum, the Kunsthaus Zürich.
Behind the train station the country's largest museum occupies a huge neo-Gothic castle built a century ago and houses a grand display of Swiss history illustrating the full length of human culture from the Stone Age up through the 1940s.

Zurich, Switzerland | 30 Tourist Attractions in 2019
The city of Zurich, a global center for banking and finance, lies at the north end of Lake Zurich in northern Switzerland. The picturesque lanes of the central Altstadt (Old Town), on either side of the Limmat River, reflect its pre-medieval history. Waterfront promenades like the Limmatquai follow the river toward the 17th-century Rathaus (town hall).
Augustinergasse is a colorful old-world street, known for the carved windows of former merchants’ houses. Shopping boulevard Bahnhofsstrasse is lined with high-end fashion stores and banks. Niederdorf is a popular nightlife area. The 9th-century Fraumünster church houses Marc Chagall's 1970s stained-glass windows, and the Grossmünster’s tower has views of the city, lake and Alps. The Landesmuseum traces Swiss culture over thousands of years. Cabaret Voltaire, a cafe/bar that's still in operation, was the 1916 birthplace of the Dada art movement. Work by modern artists like Alberto Giacometti is on display at the Kunsthaus museum.

MINIATUR WUNDERLAND (MiWuLa) SWITZERLAND - MODEL TRAIN H0, 1:87- [1080p]
The Swiss section spreads over two storeys on 250 square meters ( 2 691 sq ft ) and can already now be regarded as the highlight of the entire Wunderland! So far, 4 metric tons of plaster and 15 metric tons of steel have been used to build this section. A roughly 100 square meter ( 1 076 sq ft ) large hole in the ceiling enables the visitor to pass through a mine shaft in the 5,982 mm ( 19.6 feet ) high Matterhorn and view the miniature landscape from the summit.
Besides the Matterhorn, other highlights include the underground station Porta Alpina, the Glacier Express, the Open-Air festival, and as an extra teaser, the chocolate plant.
The Wunderland Mini-Switzerland represents 3 Swiss regions with their typical buildings and landscapes. The fourth floor, at an altitude of about 4.500 mm ( 14.7 feet ), Graubünden is shown with many regional landmarks and highlights like, for example, St.Max (aka St.Moritz).
The area around the foothills of the Matterhorn is built after the Wallis region. Most certainly one of the most striking Swiss regions.
And in the very far south of the Wunderland, bella Italia can be anticipated. The Ticino is packed with highlights. Apart from a huge Open-Air concert underneath a medievial fortress, medievial knight games, a failed bank robbery, and much, much more.
