EXPLORING a CAST IRON AQUEDUCT of GRAND UNION CANAL in ENGLAND (built 1811) ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit Cosgrove aqueduct which is a navigable cast iron trough navigable aqueduct that carries the Grand Union Canal over the River Great Ouse, on the borders between Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire at the northwest margin of Milton Keynes in England. The present structure was built in 1811, to replace a previous brick structure that had failed. When the present structure was erected, it was known as the Iron Trunk. The structure has two cast iron trough spans, with a single central masonry pier.
England, birthplace of Shakespeare and The Beatles, is a country in the British Isles bordering Scotland and Wales. The capital, London, on the River Thames, is home of Parliament, Big Ben and the 11th-century Tower of London. It's also a multicultural, modern hub for the arts and business. Other large cities are Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Bristol and the university centres of Oxford and Cambridge.

The Locks, Startops End (Marsworth, Buckinghamshire)
When the canal was heavily used during Victorian times there was a major problem with the supply of water, The original locks (for instance the one on the left of the picture) took two narrowboats at a time and this wasted water when only one narrowboat passed through, The solution was to build extra parallel half-width locks, which only took one narrowboat at a time. Where the lock was immediately adjacent to a bridge the bridge had to be extended with an additional arch. After a comparatively short time the scheme was abandoned, and now all the narrow locks have been filled in, apart from one which acts as a dry dock at Tring Summit. This picture shows the narrow lock at Startops End after it had been closed for traffic but before it was filled in.
The Grand Union Canal in England is part of the British canal system. Its main line starts in London and ends in Birmingham, stretching for 137 miles (220 km) with 166 locks.[1] It has arms to places including Leicester, Slough, Aylesbury, Wendover and Northampton.[2]
The Grand Union Canal was also the original name for part of what is now part of the Leicester Line of the modern Grand Union: this latter is now generally referred to as the Old Grand Union Canal in order to avoid ambiguity.
With competition from the railways having taken a large share of traffic in the second half of the 19th century, improvements in roads and vehicle technology in the early part of the 20th century meant that the lorry was also becoming a threat to the canals. Tolls had been reduced to compete with the railways, but there was little scope for further reduction. The Regent's Canal and the Grand Junction Canal agreed that amalgamation and modernisation were the only way to remain competitive.
The Grand Union Canal in its current form came into being on 1 January 1929, and was further extended in 1932. It was formed from the amalgamation of several different canals, and at 286.3 miles (461 km) is by far the longest canal in the UK:

The Grand Union Canal - Episode 1
Narrowboats, barges, walkers, cyclists and beautiful wildlife are the ingredients of our wonderful canal and waterways system in Great Britain. In this episode of The Grand Union Canal we simply take a gentle walk along the towpath around Gayton in Northamptonshire taking in the atmosphere of the canal. Whilst it is cold outside we can imagine the occupants of the narrowboats snuggled up in front of a roaring stove with a hot mug of coffee.

Cycling from London to Wolverton on the Grand Union Canal
Revised and re-uploaded due to copyright issue.
Leaving London and heading North through Kings Langley, Berkhamsted and Leighton Buzzard, we headed on towards Bletchley and Wolverton. The plan had been to get to Northampton, but, with not enough daylight hours on our side and having explored the area around the Iron Trunk Aquaduct, we turn back to Milton Keynes. After a scary trip along a busy and thankfully short section of the A5, we reach the train station for the journey back to London

Ghosts of The Grand Union Canal : The Blisworth Tunnel
A survey of the haunted tunnel. The Blisworth Tunnel is located upon The Grand Union Canal, in Northamptonshire, England. Between the villages of Blisworth and Stoke Bruerne. Blisworth Tunnel is the United Kingdom's third longest tunnel at 2813 metres long. Work began in 1793. Blisworth Tunnel is a haunted location, with real Paranormal provenance, witnessed by many people over the last 200 years.
In 1796, due to building on quicksand, the tunnel collapsed - killing 14 men. The tunnel finally opened in 1805, already having gained its reputation for being haunted. Originally built with only one ventilation shaft, the tunnel's sinister reputation was only compounded when in 1861, three men travelling through the tunnel on a Steamer named The Wasp collided with a narrow boat, resulting in an explosion of steam which engulfed the entire stretch of canal. To escape, the crew of The Wasp tried to outrun the narrowboat. Yet all the oxygen had been burned away by the explosion. One man aboard The Wasp passed out and fell into the canal, drowning. The other man asphyxiated and died on the steamer. The third man, reaching the tunnel end also passed out and fell into the canal but this seemed to revive him and he managed to pull himself back on board. Another man, hitching a ride, was also later discovered to have died. Two boilermen thrown to the furnace floor during the impact received terrible burns.
Blisworth Tunnel is haunted by the many Ghosts of those who have died there during its history, The 14 men who died during the collapse of 1796 and the 3 men who died in the collision and explosion of 1861.
Its reputation as a Haunted Tunnel is well established and it is said that it is still possible to hear the distant screams of those dying men, deep within the earth, from the tunnel's entrances. Also people travelling through the tunnel by boat have claimed to have seen the 14 Ghostly candles of the workmen who perished there - as if a warning to the living.
