Chelatna Lake Lodge
Sports fishing in Alaska is one of the best experiences that an outdoor enthusiast can have, and Chelatna Lake Lodge is a premium destination for world-class trout fishing . Built in the 1940's when Alaska was still a territory of the United States , this is one of the oldest lodges in Alaska. Duke and Becky Bertke have owned the lodge since 1988, so they've got 25 years of experience in providing their customers with top-quality sports fishing vacations in one of the most gorgeous natural settings on the planet.
Located 100 miles northwest of the city of Anchorage, Chelatna Lake Lodge is accessible only by small aircraft. Airplane passengers en route to the lodge can indulge in wildlife viewing that includes animals such as moose and grizzly bears as well as get a close-up look at the spectacular scenery offered by this region of the state. Private aircraft owners who wish to visit the lake in their own planes are welcome to land at the lodge's gravel airstrip. Float-plane landing is available on the lake itself. Those traveling via private plane are advised to contact the lodge and make arrangements prior to arrival.
Although this lodge is remotely located on the southern border of Denali National Park , first -class amenities are a part of the package. Gourmet-quality cuisine is prepared daily for the enjoyment of guests. Home-baked bread and desserts are created from scratch, and the talented staff happily accommodates dietary restrictions.
A wood-fired sauna situated at the edge of the lake is available for use by guests, and a nearby bear-viewing platform allows for the safe observation of Alaska's abundant wildlife. Mt. McKinley is often seen towering into the sky from the main lodge, which overlooks the legendary Alaska Range . Featuring two bedrooms and two private bathrooms each, the guest chalets are well-constructed and luxuriously spacious. Those who wish to get a taste of the sourdough lifestyle have the option of staying in an authentic hand-hewn log cabin that is part of the original structure of the lodge.
Alaska's native rainbow trout are abundant in the lake throughout the course of the summer, and experienced fishing guides are available to ensure success in both fly-fishing and spin-fishing endeavors. With the famous Chinook salmon leading the way, the Pacific salmon run begins to arrive in late June. Pink and red salmon follow in late July and sometimes number as many as 100,000. The lake is also home to arctic grayling as well as numerous varieties of resident lake trout . Those inexperienced in the fine art of fly-fishing can gain expertise by participating in fly-fishing lessons given by the guides.
Guests who would like to take advantage of activities other than trout fishing will find premium hiking and berry picking opportunities at this location. A private day hike into Denali National Park winds through wildflower-strewn alpine meadows, flowing waterfalls and the great northern boreal forest. Abundant blueberries provide berry pickers with delicious natural fruit to take home and enjoy.
Chelatna Lake Lodge is the only fishing lodge in operation on Chelatna Lake , ensuring guests an authentic Alaskan experience rather than a canned vacation limited to tourist-laden regional hot-spots. There is no set, regimented program at Chelatna Lake , so guests are free to vacation on their own terms. Limited guest capacity means that maximum time and attention is shown to the needs of all visitors.
