Guernsey - Isle Of Victor Hugo (1935)
Titles read: 'GUERNSEY - Isle of Victor Hugo'.
Guernsey, Channel Islands.
Shots from a ship as we leave Weymouth in Dorset. Crowds of people watch from a jetty. Scenic views of the coastline and Portland Bill as we travel towards the Channel Islands.
We pass Herm and Jethou Islands and then approach Guernsey. The ship arrives at St Peter's Port, the capital of the island.
Shots of a statue on Guernsey of Victor Hugo, the 19th century French poet who lived here for 15 years while in exile from his own country. Shots of Castle Cornet and Fort George, the former defence against invaders. Street scenes in St Peter's Port.
A new road leads away from the capital to the beautiful scenery of the island. People have fun in the surf at a lovely beach on the rocky coast. Shots of the sea and coastline as the sun goes down; a lighthouse is seen in the distance.

Guernsey 1960s cine film
I apologise for the 'quality' of this video, it was just a quick 'production' while drinking tea, video of cine, taken many years ago by my father whilst on holiday in Guernsey.
Guernsey was then, and I am told still is, a beautiful holiday destination, with a rich and fascinating history. I still like to tell people that England is a colony of Guernsey, as it is the last bit of the old Dukedom of Normandy, and William was Duke of Normandy before he was King of England!
Watching this myself took me back to the darkened front room of the family home, with 'Uncle' Sid and Yvonne from next door, and 'Uncle' Vic and 'Aunty' Joyce from along the road watching our latest films. Cigarette smoke would fill the room, and Mum would moan about how it made the curtains smell for days.
The films would sometimes jam, and Dad would leap to the projector before the film got too badly burned.
Happy days.
