Pope John Paul II and President Reagan Arrive In Alaska (1984)
NEW YORK TIMES - May 3, 1984
President Reagan joined with 5,000 Alaskans today to greet Pope John Paul II and hear him appeal for ''an openness of heart, a readiness to accept differences and an ability to listen to each other's viewpoint without prejudice.''
Under rainy gray skies at an outdoor ceremony at Fairbanks International Airport, Mr. Reagan welcomed the Pope to the United States and wished him well on his trip to South Korea, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Thailand.
''In a violent world, Your Holiness, you have been a minister of peace and love,'' said Mr. Reagan, who arrived in this central Alaska city Tuesday morning after his trip to China and stayed to meet with John Paul.
'A Source of Solace'
''Your words, your prayers, your example has made you - for those who suffer oppression or the violence of war - a source of solace, inspiration and hope,'' Mr. Reagan said.
After their meeting, the President and the Pope greeted handicapped children at the airport terminal and met privately for just under half an hour. The White House said they discussed their trips to Asia, as well as arms control, East-West relations and unspecified regional problems. A White House aide said the regional issues included Poland, the Middle East and Central America.
In addition, the White House said Mr. Reagan offered to send a Presidential mission to Rome to discuss American foreign aid and humanitarian programs and receive a briefing from the Vatican on its humanitarian activities to bring more cooperation ''to alleviate hunger and disease.''
'A Crossroads of the World'
It was an unusual ceremony that for a few moments turned this frontier community into what the Pope called ''a crossroads of the world.'' People began arriving at the airport at 5 A.M., choral groups sang, bands played and vending stands served Polish sausage sandwiches and soft drinks.
Public and parochial schools in the area closed for the day, and the city was decorated with welcoming banners. There were T-shirts that said, ''Great Minds in the Great Land,'' featuring pictures of Mr. Reagan, the Pope and a map of Alaska.
For Mr. Reagan it was a chance to see the Pope for a second time and the first since the United States established full diplomatic relations with the Vatican in January. He last met the Pope in June 1982 on a brief stop at the Vatican. Both the White House and the Vatican had planned refueling stops here; Mr. Reagan decided to stay over a day when he realized he could see the Pope.

Project Slawilutiiq
Project Slawilutiiq was started in the spring of 2012 by Kodiak Alutiiq Elders and Daria Safronova-Simeonoff, the Seminary Archivist. The project was supported by Bishop Benjamin and Bishop David, Kodiak Parish Clergy, St. Herman Seminary Faculty, and the Church Readers of Kodiak Parish. Stephen Bodnar, a local Kodiak musician, helped to record and put onto music the church hymns that existed, for the most part, as an oral tradition before that. This video is a condensed version of the presentation of the project at the Baranov Museum in May of 2015. The stories told by the clergy and the Elders reveal a long-lasting legacy of the 1794 Russian Orthodox Mission to Alaska, as well as send a positive message of the ongoing reintroduction and revitalization of the once common Orthodox hymns in the Alutiiq language.

Spirit Houses - Unique cemetery in Eklutna, Alaska
The old St. Nicholas church stands proud and is the center of the Alaska Native and Russian Orthodox Cultural Experience. The Eklutna cemetery, in use since 1650, is now a historical park and is probably the most photographed graveyard in Alaska.
Colorful spirit houses are a unique Athabaskan tradition. Spirit houses were built by the family after the person's death. According to Dana'ina beliefs, the spirit needs as many as 40 days to make that passage from the grave site and the houses provide shelter for the spirit. The graves of the Athabaskan people are marked not only with their traditional spirit houses, but also with an Orthodox Christian Cross.

St. Herman's Seminary - Lecture on Addictions - Part 1
Here is the first lecture from my visit to St. Herman's Orthodox Theological Seminary in Kodiak, Alaska. This was given as part of a series of presentations at the seminary through their new program: . The St. Dimitrie Program in Cluj, Romania, under OCMC Missionary Floyd Frantz is now forming an extension of the program to minister to the Diocese of Alaska. In this lecture, I introduce how the human mind operates and the groundwork for developing addiction.
