Homer Alaska Tour of Spit, Shopping, Beautiful Beach & Cruise Port (4K)
Homer Alaska was one of our favorite ports during our June 2017 Alaska cruise aboard the Holland America Amsterdam. There was a free shuttle bus (school buses) provided by HAL (see the ride here: ) that took guests from the pier to the famous Spit area of Homer. Once there, there were plenty of interesting places to shop and peruse. There was even a nice beach that we didn't expect which provided absolutely gorgeous views of the Kachemak Bay.
Other highlights included the City of Homer Port & Harbor marina where we saw a cute River Otter, the Seafarer's Memorial, and the Salty Dawg Saloon. There were tons of visitors from other parts of Alaska there as well, taking advantage of the Homer campgrounds.
Homer Alaska - What to Expect; Where to Camp, Eat, and Play
We had the opportunity to make a very short visit to Homer early in the spring, and wanted to share what travelers in the summer might expect of this eclectic city. We show a couple well known campgrounds and list a lot of other options, talk about The Spit, and highlight the many great eating options Homer has to offer, both in season and off-season. We also explain very simply how The Spit was formed.

Explore Homer in ONE Day! | Homer, Alaska | Homer Farmers Market | Homer Spit
We took a day trip down to Homer, Alaska in July 2019. We left from Moose Pass, AK and we felt it was a manageable day trip, but we would definitely like to go back and explore for a longer time!
We stopped at The Moose in Loose bakery in Soldonta and enjoyed the most delicious apple fritters we have ever tasted! It was a great way to break up the drive as well! We saw a cow moose and 2 calves on our drive in as well. The Fireweed on this drive was out of this world. It was SO tall and so beautiful - it is my new favorite wildflower!
When in Homer we enjoyed Bishops Beach, the Farmer's Market and exploring the Homer Spit. Homer is a delightful town and we cannot wait to return,

Welcome to the Salty Dawg Saloon on the Homer Spit in Homer Alaska
Website:
The Salty Dawg started out as one of the first cabins built in 1897, soon after Homer became a town site. It served as the first post office, a railroad station, a grocery store, and a coal mining office for twenty years. In 1909 a second building was constructed, and it served as a school house, post office, grocery store. And at one time, it housed three adults and eleven children.
It was acquired in the late 1940′s by Chuck Abbatt to be used as an office for Standard Oil Company. In April of 1957, he opened it as the Salty Dawg Saloon. The late 1950′s produced a change for the Salty Dawg Saloon by joining this building to it.
The Alaska Territory became the 49th state of the union in January 1959.
Earl Hillstrand, the late State Representative, purchased it in 1960. After the March 1964 Good Friday earthquake, he moved the structure to its present location. The distinctive lighthouse tower was added to cover a water storage tank, thus completing one of Homer's more historical and recognizable landmarks.
The Salty Dawg Saloon that we know today is owned and operated by John Warren.

RVing to Alaska | Exploring the Homer Spit
We took the highway west…all the way. The furthest west point is Anchor Point Alaska. We walked around the beach with some friends and Emmett had a blast walking their dog. Even though the dog was just the right size for him, I think the dog was still walking him.
The beach was full of interesting rocks and beautiful shells, but also more dead fish than you could imagine. The fishermen had filleted their halibut and thrown them into the water, and then they floated up onto the beach.
Next stop was the Homer Spit. We camped at a campground that was just a parking lot without hookups, but it was right on the beach. Besides Denali, this has been my favorite stop in Alaska. When the tide was out we got to walk and play on the sandy beach, build sandcastles, and explore the tidepools. We saw otters, eagles, jellyfish, crabs, and a skate.
Further down the spit there are shops and restaurants. The kids' favorite stop was the toy store. Outside they had a bubble blowing area and inside there was a play area filled with toys and trains. We also stopped to enjoy some ice cream. Underneath the shops down on the beach were some swings. They would have been a blast at high tide because you'd be able to swing above the water, but every time we went it was low tide.
The spit was naturally made many, many years ago but is now maintained by man otherwise it would wash away. A fishing hole is a favorite spot for anglers on the spit. During high tide the fish can swim into the area and during low tide they are blocked off from the rest of the water and trapped in the pond until the tide comes back in. This is a perfect opportunity to catch some dinner. Which is exactly what we saw as we walked by. Fish were jumping and splashing and many were swimming for the last time.
So while we aren't big on shopping and we don't go out to eat often, the Homer Spit was still a great stop for nature and wildlife. It will be remembered as one of our favorites on our trip through Alaska.
