Located on the border between Nagano and Gifu Prefecture, Mount Norikuradake (乗鞍岳) is a part of the Northern Japan Alps. With its height at 3026 meters, it is the third tallest peak of the Northern Japan Alps. This volcanic mountain is among the 100 famous Japanese mountains.
Mount Norikuradake is a popular destination for hikers, with its beautiful scenery and sensitivity to nature. Mount Norikuradake is one of the first places in Japan to see the leaves change color. Therefore, autumn attracts more visitors than the other seasons.
Another reason for the mountain’s popularity is the ease to reach the summit. Though closed to private cars, taxis and buses are able to transport hikers from the parking lots at the base of the mountain (on both the Nagano and Gifu side) to the Norikura Bus Terminal (located 2700 meters above sea level). From Norikura Bus Terminal, visitors walk along a gravel path to a mountain hut for about 30 minutes. A further 60 minutes along a hiking trail will bring visitors to Kengamine Peak, the highest point of Mount Norikuradake.
In addition to the autumn beauty, snow is remains on the slopes late into the summer on this mountain. Therefore it is possible to hike up the mountain (in the summer) and ski down (in the summer).
Please note: the road up Mount Norikuradake is closed during the winter.
From Gifu Side: the road is closed from November to mid May.
From Nagano Side: the road is closed from November to June.
Access Information:
**Via Bus from Norikura Kogen (Nagano side)
Board the bus bound for Norikura Bus Terminal in front of the Kanko Center (観光センター前) bus stop in Norikura Kogen. There are 1 to 2 buses per hour. The one-way journey should take 50 minutes with a cost of 1450 yen. Passengers purchasing a round trip will receive a slight discount as the roundtrip fare is 2500 yen.
**Via Taxi from Norikura Kogen (Nagano side)
From the Kanko Center, please take a taxi to the Norikura Bus Terminal. The one-way journey should take about 45 minutes with a cost of about 9000 yen.
Note: Buses and taxis are only available from July to October as the road is closed in the other months.
Via bus from Takayama (Gifu side)
Board the bus bound for Norikura Bus Terminal from Honokidaira parking lot next to Hirayu Onsen. The one-way journey should take 1 hour with a cost of 1420 yen. Passengers purchasing a round trip will receive a slight discount as the roundtrip fare is 2300 yen.
**Via Taxi from Takayama (Gifu side)
From Hirayu Onsen, please take a taxi to the Norikura Bus Terminal. The one-way journey should take about an hour with a cost of about 8000 yen.
Note: Buses and taxis are only available from mid-May to October as the road is closed in the other months.
By car
Private cars are not allowed to drive up Mount Norikuradake. Travelers will need to transfer to a bus or a taxi at the base of the mountain.
*On the Nagano side, cars are allowed as far as Sanbondaki in Norikura Kogen. There are multiple free parking lots in the area, including a large one at the Kanko Center.
*On the Gifu side, drivers can park their car in Hirayu Onsen or at the Honokidaira parking lot outside of the town.
