Open for more info if you're planning a trip to Japan for the first time:
Traveling around Japan:
If it's your first time travelling to Japan and you're thinking of visiting the different areas like Kyoto, Osaka & Nara. I would recommend that you purchase a JR also known as Japan Rail pass prior to your trip.
(For your information, JR pass is exclusively for foreigners only and it allows you to travel almost anywhere around Japan using the shinkansen/bullet train, limited express, express, rapid and local trains. DO NOTE THAT JR PASS CAN ONLY BE PURCHASED OUTSIDE OF JAPAN.)
Jo and I purchased a 7 day pass at JTB. You can also purchase yours online at or you can also purchase them at most travel agencies. Trust me, even though the JR pass seems pretty pricey, it is exactly what you need if you're travelling to a lot of areas in Japan. Alternatively, you can purchase area passes if you're just crossing a certain part of Japan.
After purchasing your JR pass, you will be issued a voucher where you have to redeem it when you reach Japan. As Jo and I were planning to use our JR pass for our first week in Japan, we changed it immediately once we have landed at Narita Airport. (Located at B1 at the airport station, follow the signs, it is quite easy to spot.) When changing for your JR pass at the airport station, do state where you're planning to go to the staffs there and they will help you check train timings as well as get you a reserved seat ticket. Alternatively, you can check the train timings yourself at
If you're like us, your arrival airport is Narita Airport and you plan to visit Kyoto first using your JR pass, you would have to take the Narita express from Narita airport station to Shinagawa and then change to shinkansen to Kyoto station. There are a few international airports around Japan. So do take that into consideration when planning your itinerary.
Travelling around Kyoto:
If you've got your JR pass, you can use the pass to travel around Kyoto too as the Japan Rail covers a huge majority of stations around Japan. HOWEVER there are some places that JR does not cover eg. If you want to go to Namba also known as Osaka central from Kyoto using only JR lines, you would have to change trains a few times. eg. Kyoto Station to Shin-Osaka/Osaka Station to Imamiya Station to JR Namba Station compared to using private railway lines (Kyoto Station to Shin-Osaka/Osaka Station to Namba Station.) Alternatively, to save time and effort, you can just purchase a one way/return ticket at the private railway station.
Hope the information above can help you plan your trip with ease :)

For the Hiwatari firewalking ceremony mountain monks go in retreat for weeks. They enter the compound blowing conch shells. The purifying powers of ax, water, fire and salt are evoked. See also for firewalking my vid of the Theemidi festival in Singapore.Photography Michael Rogge

Nanzenji Temple (南禅寺), Kyoto City
Nanzenji Temple (南禅寺) is a Zen Temple belonging to the Rinzai Sect-Nanzenji School of Zen Buddhism. This temple is located in the upper/central east side of Kyoto city, at the foothills of the Higashiyama mountains. At one time this temple is considered above the five great Zen temples of Kyoto City.
This temple has a large Gate at it's entrance called sanmon, and it is almost as large as the Gate at Tofukuji Temple. In the eastern permises of the temple, there is a roman aquaduct style elevated brick waterway, belonging to a Lake Biwa (Biwako) Canal.
There are thirteen sub temples in the temple complex.

Sugamo Jizo-dori - Tokyo - 巣鴨 - 4K Ultra HD
Best known as the senior’s version of Harajuku, Sugamo and its Jizo-Dori shopping district give you a unique perspective on Japan and it’s senior citizens daily lives.
On this 800m long street you will find no less than 200 shops that sell pretty much everything that a Japanese senior citizen needs and loves. Of course it includes a lot of food and clothing stores but you can also find a great selection of traditional sweets including the Shio-Daifuku, a salty pounded rice cake containing sweet bean paste.
Finally, if you have the opportunity to visit this place, make sure to visit the Togenuki Jizo temple located halfway down Jizo-Dori street where people line-up to wash its sacred statue with water and towel to later press on their body to heal any pain they may have.

Tokyo morning rush hour. This is how commuters are cramped onto trains every morning.
