Isle of Man Steam Railway
Available on DVD from:
Opened in 1874, the line we know today as The Isle of Man Steam Railway runs from Douglas to Castletown and Port Erin - a distance of just over 15 miles. Passing through the scenic Manx countryside, with coastal views and in the shadow of distant hills, this railway has survived many challenges and today, following huge investment and renewal, is a must-do part of any visit to the island. With beautifully restored 120 year old locomotives, coaches and stations, this 3ft gauge railway is on of the best of its kind anywhere in the world.
This official souvenir DVD, produced with full assistance of Isle of Man Railways, looks at the system in detail including:
• A brief history
• A journey along the line today, looking at all stations
• A visit to the workshops at Douglas and Port Erin Museum
• Morning start at Douglas including 'lighting up' the loco
• Filmed from the lineside, the footplate and a special on-board driver's eye view camera
• Includes all operational locomotives today
Bonus footage: A ride on the Dining Train. Given full access, we join an evening dining train. In the kitchen car with the chef, the food is prepared and drinks are served. A good time is had by all!

A newly formed organisation with the objective of reopening the railway line between Radstock and Frome.
One objective is to set up a base within area 3 of the railway land in Radstock, areas 1 and 2 destined for redevelopment. We aim to reinstate a passenger service along the route, as well as keeping the current cycle-path running alongside. A new station and signal box is due to built here, with the hope if permitted to see the engine shed redeveloped to accommodate a family restaurant, railway museum and a section reserved for storing and maintaining rolling stock. A secure cycle shed on-site will allow passing cyclists to stop for snacks and refreshments

Douglas Station then under steam and a nice fast run at Port Soderick then arriving at Port soderick station, then departs then we go to Goorga woods for a fast pass under full steam and a slight incline makes this shot one of my favorites.
The ducks at Waterworks road hear the train coming as yet again unfull steam it make easy work of the incline..then running down hill into Santon Station then we see the train pass Santon Station non stop. Next wev see the train are at Ballasalla and depart, Then the train arrives at St Marys Port then departs. The next clips is the Pie and Mash late night train pass Castletown on its way to Prt Erin where the train departs and makes its way back to Douglas

Isle of Man Steam Railway. Part 1.
The Isle of Man Steam Railway is a truly delightful line, the only surviving part of the Isle of Man Steam network, that runs from Douglas in the east to Port Erin in the south west of the Island. Unlike preserved railways as we know them, the Isle of Man Steam Railway is still 'State Operated' with fully paid staff. Essentially it's a 'proper' railway, equally at home carrying holidaymakers or commuters.
The whole system was closed in 1966 and after a brief revival by Marquess of Ailsa, the lines (except the Douglas to Port Erin line) ceased to operate. The railway as we know it today was nationalised in 1978. Today it's doing well with four trains each direction a day (five during the TT race season) However it does not operate in the winter season. The line is operated entirely by Beyer Peacock 2-4-0s with the exception of 15 'Caledonia', a Dubs 0-6-0.
The video was taken over a period of a few days, from both the lineside and on the train. Engines running included
No.10 G.H.Wood in the Apple Green livery of the 'Ailsa' period, and No.12 Hutchinson in the traditional Red livery. No.13 Kissack also made an appearance on the final day of filming.
Hope you enjoy this video of a truly lovely but purposeful little line. I'll be going back at some stage! Another video will be up in the near future.
This video has been produce for the locomotive crews and staff of the Isle of Man steam railway. In particular, the fireman on No.12 Hutchinson on Monday 14th September for his welcoming and professional attitude.

Groudle Glen Narrow Gauge Railway UK. Driver’s View. Isle of Man tourism.
The Isle of Man Groudle Glen Railway. Narrow gauge railway experience at its best. Many thanks to staff for allowing me to record the driver’s eye view on the return trip from Sea Lion Rocks.
For rail fans particularly, the Isle of Man is an absolutely wonderful experience ! ! ! It includes The Isle of Man Steam Railway, the extensive vintage tram network, The Great Laxey Mines Railway, The Horse Drawn Trams in Douglas and the Groudle Glen Railway.
The rebuilding of the Groudle Glen Narrow Gauge Railway has resulted in a magnificent tourist attraction that is a tribute to all the folk that obviously work so hard to make this a continuing success. Remember, when you take your trip, it is absolutely essential that you visit the excellent tea rooms at the end of the line as the scones are fabulous.
If you are visiting the Isle of Man for a few days, I suggest for the duration of your holiday that you buy a “GO CARD”, in advance, from the Isle of Man Tourist Board as it is valid on everything that moves and you can use it as many times as you wish to travel, except taxis. Great, great value as we even used it on the bus from the airport when we arrived !
Below is a list of web pages that you may find useful and narrow gauge rail fans will find the building of the new locomotive “BROWN BEAR” an interesting read. Oh! Just one other thing, do check their timetable carefully before you visit as they don’t run on every day of the week.
The locomotive that is being rebuilt in the workshop at Lhen Coan on the Groudle Glen railway is SEA LION and the twin to POLAR BEAR. This locomotive can be seen on the Amberley Railway at the Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre on the South Coast of England. I have also uploaded a video of this great little railway that you can view.
For the many subscribers from numerous countries around the world that kindly visit my site, I hope that the Isle of Man will now feature in their list of places to visit for narrow gauge enjoyment.
Isle of Man Steam Railway - watching pistons at Douglas
Chris Vine was in the Isle of Man in 2017, taking schools to visit the steam railway and explaining how steam engines work. The first part of their day was to watch (and understand) how pistons drive the locomotive. Here they are watching them from the platform.
