Chai Elul in Mayanot Jerusalem, getting ready with chabad 5773!
Today is: Wednesday, Elul 18, 5772 · September 5, 2012
Chai Elul
Today's Laws & Customs
• Chassidic Holiday
Chai Elul (Hebrew for the 18th of Elul, also meaning the life of Elul) is celebrated by the Chassidic community as the birthday of the two great luminaries -- Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov, the founder of Chassidism; and Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, the founder of Chabad. Chassidim wish each other Gut Yom Tov! and conduct joyous gatherings called farbrengens.
• 12 Days of Reflection
Elul, the last month of the Jewish year, is a month devoted to stocktaking and introspection. A Chassidic tradition holds that the last twelve days of the year -- Elul 18 to 29 -- are specifically devoted to the twelve months of the closing year: on each of these twelve days, one should review the deeds and achievements of its corresponding month.

• Elul Observances
As the last month of the Jewish year, Elul is traditionaly a time of introspection and stocktaking -- a time to review one's deeds and spiritual progress over the past year and prepare for the upcoming Days of Awe of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.
As the month of Divine Mercy and Forgiveness (see Today in Jewish History for Elul 1) it is a most opportune time for teshuvah (return to G-d), prayer, charity, and increased Ahavat Yisrael (love for a fellow Jew) in the quest for self-improvement and coming closer to G-d. Chassidic master Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi likens the month of Elul to a time when the king is in the field and, in contrast to when he is in the royal palace, everyone who so desires is permitted to meet him, and he receives them all with a cheerful countenance and shows a smiling face to them all.
Specific Elul customs include the daily sounding of the shofar (ram's horn) as a call to repentance. The Baal Shem Tov instituted the custom of reciting three additional chapters of Psalms each day, from the 1st of Elul until Yom Kippur (on Yom Kippur the remaining 36 chapters are recited, thereby completing the entire book of Psalms).
#1087.1- Solomon Builds The Temple - (from 1 & 2 Chronicles)
Song # 1087.1 from Our Gospel In Song Collection by Col Johnston. In the Books of 1 Chronicles and 2 Chronicles we see that King David is now much older, and he made his son Solomon king over all of Israel. In his fourth year as king, Solomon begins to build the Temple of God in which to place the ark of the covenant.
When David was old and full of years, he made his son Solomon king over Israel (1 Chronicles 23:1). He also gathered together all the leaders of Israel, as well as the priests and the Levites (1 Chronicles 23:2). David said to Solomon “You have many workmen: stone-cutters, masons and carpenters, as well as men skilled in every kind of work (1 Chronicles 22:15), in gold and silver, bronze and iron - craftsmen beyond number. Now begin the work, and the Lord be with you (1 Chronicles 22:16). Then Solomon began to build the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord had appeared to his father David (2 Chronicles 3:1). He began building the foundation on the second day of the second month in the fourth year of his reign (2 Chronicles 3:2-3). He overlaid the inside with pure gold (2 Chronicles 3:4). He panelled the main hall with pine and covered it with fine gold and decorated it with palm tree and chain designs (2 Chronicles 3:5). In the Most Holy Place he made a pair of sculptured cherubim and overlaid them with gold (2 Chronicles 3:10). They stood on their feet, facing the main hall (2 Chronicles 3:13). He made the curtain of blue, purple and crimson yarn and fine linen, with cherubim worked into it (2 Chronicles 3:14). In the front of the temple he made two pillars, each with a capital on top (2 Chronicles 3:15). He made interwoven chains and put them on top of the pillars (2 Chronicles 3:16).
Thought for today: God can do extraordinary things through ordinary people.
Thought for the future: You have all you need in life, when you have God in your life. Where will you spend your eternity?

It's Not The Mountain We Conquer, But Ourselves
For some, life is an uphill battle, like climbing a mountain.
For others life's meaning starts with the decision to climb an actual mountain.
Moshe Reuven always considered himself very secular.
He became successful at a young age and enjoyed 'the good life'.
After deciding to climb the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro, and making a deal with a friend, he landed up in Mayanot Yeshiva in Jerusalem, which changed his life.
This story highlights the power of friendship, determination and sticking to your word, and the power that each element holds.
