Itabashi Art Musuem
The Itabashi Art Museum was opened on May 20, 1979 as the first municipal art museum in the 23 cities of Tokyo. On its 40th anniversary this year in 2019, the museum will reopen after a large-scale renovation that meets the needs of the museum’s various activities. The main collections of the museum are Early Modern Japanese Paintings including the Edo Kano School, Avant-Garde art from the Taisho to early Showa era, and works of artists who have connections with Itabashi.
It has held important exhibitions that introduce Edo culture and the Ikebukuro Montparnasse School, based on research and the collection of artworks. Moreover, it holds exhibitions on illustration and design including the Bologna Children’s Book Fair’s Illustrators Exhibition. The aim of the museum is to become more widely known among visitors through lectures and workshops related to these exhibitions.
A Community Dojo in Japan
Many larger towns in Japan have community dojos that are open to the public. You'll find people practicing a variety of martial arts here. Today, my good friend and long time Tokyo resident, Chris Koprowski and I visit a community dojo in Itabashi (Tokyo), Japan.
Chris Koprowski is a 5th degree black belt in Aikido and teaches classes in Tokyo. Check out his website here:

Matsunaga Kinenkan (松永記念館)
Matsunaga Yasuzaemon (松永安左ヱ門), 1875-1971, was an important Japanese industrialist, art collector and tea ceremony master. He led power companies such as the Kyushu Electric Railway and the Chubu Electric Power Company. At the age of sixty, after his businesses were nationalized, he retired and took the Tea name Jian (耳庵), follow your ear after sixty, from the Analects of Confucius.
In 1946, he moved to the Odawara area and built a house called Rōkyosō (老欅荘) “Old Zelkova Villa ”, on a wooded hillside in Odawara Itabashi (小田原板橋). The house included a tea room, “Shōkatei” (松下亭), where he hosted tea ceremonies for many other famous connoisseurs. In 1959, he built an Art Gallery, to display his collection of important antiques. In 1979, the buildings and garden were donated to the city of Odawara, and from 1980 onwards, the Matsunaga Memorial Hall (松永記念館)
has been used as part of the Odawara Cultural Museum for special exhibitions. (In 1980, Matsunaga’s antiques were moved to the Fukuoka Art Museum).
In 1986, two tea houses (Yōuan, 葉雨庵, from Minami-machi, and Uyaku-tei, 烏薬亭, from Odawara), were repaired and moved to the south corner of the garden. On the second floor of the main Memorial Hall, visitors can enjoy a short tea ceremony thanks to the Odawara Tea Ceremony Federation. Additionally, Rōkyosō, 老欅荘, Matsunaga’s home in Odawara Itabashi, was restored in 2000 and opened to the public in 2001.
Surrounding the Matsunaga Memorial Hall, the garden landscape is expertly maintained, and in 2007 the garden was included in a list of 100 Best Japanese History Parks (日本の歴史公園100選). A large pond is home to water lilies, yellow iris and Japanese carp koi (錦鯉). Below Matsunaga’s house, an old, towering zelkova tree survives as a reminder of the Rōkyosō (老欅荘) “Old Zelkova Villa ” name. Next to the main Memorial hall, a large red rhododendron that an eighty-year-old Matsunaga brought back from the UK still blooms in late April — mid-May. Elsewhere in the garden, large Lindera strychnifolia shrubs were apparently planted by Matsunaga himself. This is the origin of the tea house annex name: Uyaku-tei (烏薬亭). (In Chinese medicine, the dried root of this tree is called crow medicine, and has been prized as a miracle longevity cure. Interestingly, Matsunaga Jian lived to 96 years of age!).
DIRECTIONS: From the Odawara Railway Station, the Hakone Itabashi Station (箱根板橋駅) is the first stop on the Odakyu Line towards Hakone Yumoto. From the Hakone Itabashi Station exit, a road directly across leads to the main street of Itabashi after about 200 m. Turn left here and walk for another 330m., passing shops on the left such as the Bonjour Bakery, and the famous hand-prepared Shimoda Tofu Shop (下田豆腐店). Further up the main street on the right-hand side, a large dark building is the former home and factory of the Uchino Soy Sauce enterprise (内野家と醤油工場). Next, on the right is a vertical sign pointing towards the Matsunaga Memorial Hall (松永記念館入り口), and a short walk of about 180 m. along this minor road leads to the entrance on the left, just after a dense boundary hedge (free admission).

Walking Around Japan Pt.7 - Mitaka & Kamakura - 16 days in Japan 2016
Walking Around Japan Pt.7 - Mitaka & Kamakura - 16 days in Japan 2016. I went to Mitaka to see the Ghibli museum, animation Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki, I walked from Kichijoji station down to Inokashira Park . you do need advance tickets to get into this museum, no photos allowed inside. I was a nice walk around the lake with lots of people eating outside in the park. The walk was a bit far but it was a nice scenic walk I would've missed if I took the shuttle bus. Kamakura was a day trip from Shibuya and usually not that crowded but I was there during Golden Week, so try to avoid that holiday. Everything is walkable but lots of walking! the beach town was nice.

Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Masterpiece: The Enoura Observatory of the Odawara Art Foundation
The site is a hilly area covered with citrus trees in Enoura, in the Kataura district of Odawara, adjacent to Prefectural Route 740. Nestled against the outer rim of the Hakone Mountains and overlooking Sagami Bay, it has panoramic views extending to the Boso Peninsula and Oshima Island. The facility was envisioned by contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto as a forum for disseminating art and culture both within Japan and to the world, and will comprise a gallery space, a noh stage, the revived Tensho-an tea ceremony room, the restored Muromachi Period (c. 1338-1573) Meigetsu Gate, a strolling garden, and offices.
From the early modern period onward, the Itabashi district and other areas of Odawara were home to groups of artisans with mastery of sophisticated techniques, which have been handed down continuously until the present day. The Enoura Complex will be constructed using these techniques and methods, which are growing increasingly difficult to preserve, and will feature a range of architectural styles from medieval to contemporary.

Samurai Battle Festival - Battle of Sekigahara Festival
In the small town of Sekigahara a festival is put on to commemorate one of the most decisive battles in Japanese history - the Battle of Sekigahara. In 1600, two massive armies converge on Sekigahara and fought a great battle. The winner, Tokugawa Ieyasu went on to become shogun and started a new era known as the Edo Period named after his capital which is today Tokyo.
The main star at the festival is not either of the two opposing leaders suprisingly but Otani Yoshitsugu, a warlord suffering from leprosy who fought for the Western Army against Tokugawa. He's the tragic hero of the tale of Sekigahara. It's his forces which get attacked from the rear by a turncoat by the name Kobayakawa Hideaki.
Overall it's a small re-enactment for such a pivotal piece of history but they do a good job with the drama.
For a bit more background check out my Sekigahara beer talk:
TATE - THE ART OF SAMURAI FIGHTS

JAPANTRIP「Roppongi Hills」 Minato-ku, Tokyo【六本木ヒルズ(ムーミン)】
Roppongi Hills is one of the best examples of a city within the city. Opened in 2003 in the heart of Tokyo's Roppongi district, the building complex features offices, apartments, shops, restaurants, a hotel, art museum, observation deck and more. The office floors are home to leading companies from the IT and financial sectors, and Roppongi Hills has become a symbol of the Japanese IT industry.
At the center of Roppongi Hills stands the 238 meter Mori Tower, one of the tallest buildings in the city. While most of the building is occupied by office space, the first few floors have restaurants and shops and the top few floors house an observation deck and modern art museum that are open to the public.

Samurai Battle Festival with Gackt - Kawanakajima in Joetsu 2013
Photos:
The Battle of Kawanakajima in 1561 was a large samurai battle in the age of warfare. It was fought between two great warlords - Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin.
Joetsu in Niigata prefecture puts on a yearly celebration of the event because nearby Kasugayama was once a principle castle of Uesugi Kenshin. It was from there that Uesugi marched out to meet in Takeda Shingen in battle.
The last several years Joetsu has been fortunate to have musician star Gackt play as Uesugi Kenshin. Gackt had played the role in the NHK drama Furin Kazan in 2007. This was his 6th appearance at the festival.
