Prayers with an Italian flavor in Jerusalem
An early 18th century Rococo synagogue last used in Italy in World War I, it was reconstructed in Israel in 1952 and has since formed the heart of Jerusalem’s Italian-Jewish community, according to Gilad Levian, director of the U. Nahon Museum of Italian Jewish Art in which this architectural gem is housed.
The synagogue was originally built in Conegliano Veneto, a village located between Padua and Venice, where Jews lived from the 16th century. They prayed in the synagogue in front of a beautiful Holy Ark with fine golden carved wooden decorations.
Watch Ariel University architecture Prof. David Cassuto, whose family came from Italy, describe the rich history of Conegliano Veneto Synagogue and its new life in Israel.

The Italian Synagogue - 27 Rehov Hillel
n 1952 the synagogue of the Italian town Conegliano Veneto, north of Venice, was reconsecrated on the second floor of the former Schmidt School building on Rehov Hillel, adjacent to the Ma'aleh Religious High School. The original synagogue was built in 1701. The Italian Synagogue, located in the Schmidt Compound, was built in 1887 as part of the Christian European construction outside the Jerusalem walls, and functioned until 1910 as a dormitory for girls named for Father Schmidt. The ark and original furniture were brought by Umberto Nahon, who was the head of the Organization of Italian Jews at the time. The ark, approximately 370 years old, is made of wood decorated with artistic carvings in restrained Baroque style. Over the years, items of Judaica from Italy were collected and stored in the rooms adjacent to the synagogue. In 1982 the Italian Jewish Museum was opened to preserve the Italian Jewish heritage. The museum displays objects of many kinds, dating from the 15th century to the present. In the late 1980s restoration work continued, and the women's gallery was restored to its original form. The services of the Italian Jewish community in Jerusalem are conducted in the synagogue on Shabbat and holidays, following the Italian rite, evidently a continuation of the ancient liturgical tradition of Eretz Israel

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Italian Jews in the Holy Land
HOLY LAND UNCOVERED | The Jews of Italy have a long and rich history. The community dates back to Roman times, after the destruction with the Second Temple in Jerusalem. In the modern period, the community flourished all the way up until the Second World War and the horrors of the Holocaust. The community's art has been preserved in Jerusalem in a museum built in one of the most beautiful buildings in the Holy City. Our Shelby Weiner has the story.

The restored ancient synagogue of Conegliano Veneto is one of the highlights of the U. Nahon Museum of Italian Jewish Art in Jerusalem. Dating from the 16th century, the synagogue - including its magnificent ark - was transfered to Jerusalem after WWII, where it is now an integral part of the museum and serves the Italian community. With God’s help, all of the Jewish people will be living in unity in Israel. But until all of our brothers and sisters make Aliyah or come to visit, we decided to recreate the Israel experience on camera, to give everyone a virtual tour of what it’s like living in the holy land on a normal day. Ride around with us on public transportation through the city, or take a bus with us to holy graves and historic sites. Follow us as we walk around the streets and alleys of ancient Jerusalem, interview tourists visiting for holidays, and talk to the locals about the history. There’s no doubt that Passover, Sukkot, Chanuka (Hanukkah) and Purim here are an experience that everyone should have, and we’re going to capture the atmosphere all on video, and have tourists explain what they most spiritually connect to here in Jerusalem. We’re going to be walking around the old city of Jerusalem, visiting Tel-Aviv, Haifa, Netanya, Be’er Sheba, Tazfat ( Safed) , Meron, Tveria (Tiberias), Ashdod, Eilat, and all the other favorite tourist locations. We’ll be taking hikes in the Golan, backpacking around the Negev, and swimming in the Dead Sea. Israel makes the Torah (Bible – Old Testament) feel so real and alive, and we’re going to capture a taste of what life here feels like for a normal citizen. All the Israeli news and TV channels like Arutz Sheva, Jerusalem Post, Haaretz, VICE news, CNN, BBC and The New York Times, only report the occasional extreme terrorism and terrorist attacks, boring international politics, Orthodox VS Secular conflicts, and IDF military operations. We’re making a reality news channel to show you what it’s like to live in Jerusalem, to go shopping in the Jerusalem market, and to taste all the local traditional foods at the restaurants and cafes. Falafel and shawarma anyone? Israel has some of the most talented street performers in the world, and we’ll show you the side of Israel Got Talent that is too good for the television series as we check out the street entertainers in the merkaz, watching Middle Eastern entertainment at its finest. And most importantly, for those experienced travelers who are more interested in old fashioned tourism, we’ll be going to all the historic sites and archaeological digs, like the Kotel (Western Wall, Wailing Wall) by the Temple Mount, The City of David, Ancient Synagogues all over Israel, Ancient Graveyards, the Mediterranean coast, and Lake Kinneret (Sea of Galilee), as well as all the mystical Kabbalistic locations. And of course, the Emunah Channel team is going to be following Rav Dror Moshe Cassouto around before and after classes, talking to him about the soul and Hashem, as usual. Israel is the most scenic and exciting country in the world. It’s our homeland, the Jewish homeland, and is so full of vibrant life. Join us! Come Visit! Make Aliyah! Or just book a one-way flight ticket like I did! See you soon, the Emunah Project team can’t wait to interview you and hear your story!

Jehohanan (Yehohanan) was a man put to death by crucifixion in the 1st century CE, whose ossuary was found in 1968 when building contractors working in Giv'at ha-Mivtar, a Jewish neighborhood in northern East Jerusalem, accidentally uncovered a Jewish tomb. The Jewish stone ossuary had the Hebrew inscription Jehohanan the son of Hagkol. In his initial anthropological observations in 1970 at Hebrew University, Nicu Haas concluded Jehohanan was crucified with his arms stretched out with his forearms nailed, supporting crucifixion on a two-beamed Latin cross. However, a 1985 reappraisal discovered multiple errors in Haas's observations

The outstanding synagogue of Conegliano Veneto
The outstanding highlight of the Museum is the synagogue, which is now used by Italian Jews in Jerusalem: it was originally the synagogue of Conegliano Veneto, a village located between Padua and Venice.
Jews lived in Conegliano Veneto from the sixteenth century and prayed in a synagogue in front of a beautiful Holy Ark with fine golden carved wooden decorations. In a carved panel on the lower part of the Ark is a dedication to Rabbi Nathan Ottolengo (d. 1615), who was the head of the Talmudic School of Conegliano Veneto. The Ark and other items of furniture were transported to a “new” synagogue the community erected in 1701. To this period belong the golden Rococo wings and the elaborate golden carvings on top of the Ark.
The “new” synagogue served the small community as a cultural and spiritual centre for religious studies and family celebrations. It remained in sporadic use until the First World War. The last service was held on Yom Kippur in 1918 by Jewish soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian army and their chaplain, Rabbi Harry Deutsch
