Iceland-Vatnajokull National Park
Vatnajökull National Park is one of three national parks in Iceland. It encompasses all of Vatnajökull glacier and extensive surrounding areas. These include the national parks previously existing at Skaftafell in the southwest and Jökulsárgljúfur in the north.
In general, national parks are protected areas which are considered unique because of their nature or cultural heritage. The unique qualities of Vatnajökull National Park are primarily its great variety of landscape features, created by the combined forces of rivers, glacial ice, and volcanic and geothermal activity.
Jokulsargljuf National Park, Iceland
Jökulsárgljúfur National Park is a former national park situated in the north of Iceland around the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum. It lies to the north of the Dettifoss waterfall. On 7 June 2008, it became a part of the larger Vatnajökull National Park.
The area is of interest because of its chaotic canyon and volcanic mountains. Eight thousand years ago, a volcano erupted directly underneath the river and glacial ice. This caused explosions and chaotic flooding.

Hljodaklettar, Iceland
Located by Jokulsargljufur in Vatnajokull National Park, North of Iceland.
Hljodaklettar (sound cliffs or cliffs of sounds or echoing rocks) are a bizarre looking group of crater plugs, depicting basaltic columns, in different positions, creating all kinds of patterns. The loose material of those craters, was washed away, by catastrophic flood waves originating from the big icecap Vatnajokull (Glacier) in the south. Hljodaklettar is a cluster of caves, the remnants of volcanic activities carefully grinded and polished by the river Jokulsa a Fjollum.

The Land of Ice & Fire (Part 17 - Hljóðaklettar)
Hljodaklettar (‘Echo Rocks’) is a distinctive cluster of columnar rock formations, located by Jokulsargljufur in Vatnajokull National Park. Hljóðaklettar stand at the entrance to Vesturdalur, down by the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum. The columns lie at all angles and derive their name from the strange echoes created by the numerous caves and uncommon rock formations.
Iceland - Sellfoss
Selfoss is a waterfall in the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum in the north of Iceland which drops over some waterfalls about 30 km before flowing into the Arctic sea.
A few hundred meter downstream of the Selfoss waterfall (11 m high), the Dettifoss waterfall is situated, the most powerful waterfall of Europe. The river originates from the glacier Vatnajökull and therefore the water input is different depending on the season, the weather and volcanic activity. The water falls down 44 m over a width of 100 m. Afterwards, the river passes through a gorge which is part of the Jökulsárgljúfur National Park.

A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of wild nature for posterity and as a symbol of national pride.
An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on
Protected Areas, has defined National Park as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people, Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a national park in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. Some would say that the first official
national park to be designated as such at its creation was Mackinac Island, legislated in 1875. Australia's Royal
National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.
The largest national park in the world meeting the IUCN definition is the Northeast Greenland National Park, which was established in 1974. According to the IUCN, 6,555 national parks worldwide met its criteria in 2006. IUCN is still discussing the parameters of defining a national park.
National parks are almost always open to visitors. Most national parks provide outdoor recreation and camping opportunities as well as classes designed to educate the public on the importance of conservation and the natural wonders of the land in which the national park is located.

Flaajokull glacier Iceland - tongue of the Vatnajokull
Glacier Flaajokull ( Fláajökull ) is one of the many branches ( tongues ) of the largest in terms of volume of the glacier in Europe - Vatnajokull. It is located in Vatnajokull National Park, created in 2008, following the merger of parks Skaftafell and Jokulsargljufur. The park is also a caldera volcano Askja and six other active volcanoes. The park covers 12% of the country of which he glacier with a volume of 8100 km2, is about 8%.
According to the Guinness Book of Records glacier Batnajokull broke the record when it comes on the longest line of sight - in good weather conditions is viewed from the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands - Slættaratindur (from a distance of over 550 kilometers).
The glacier Vatnajokull you can get many other languages, but it has just sliding glacier Flaajokull is one of the best places to start climbing. For this place takes off a lot of trekking to the ice caves hidden in the glacier.
For the glacier leads several hiking trails. Turning the ring road No. 1 in a gravel road located between farms Lambhus Cottages and Holmur (both offer accommodation) you will reach the parking lot on the river Holmes. Built in 2014 footbridge over the river allows you to quickly and as easily reach the glacier.
Navigating without a guide on the glacier is extremely dangerous. Finding the cave on your own or hike on the glacier without proper equipment, can be fatal. Best to use the services of one of the many companies offering tours into the glacier.
Glacier Flaajokull plays a key role in shaping the landscape. Over the last century, retreated inland about two kilometers.
