San Francisco Kayak Fishing
Thanksgiving Day Kayak Fishing in San Francisco Bay from Pier 14 down to the Bay Bridge. Bait used was a 4 inch Berkley Gulp on a High Low drop shot with a 2 oz. weight with 3/0 Gamagatsu Baitholder hooks. Reel is a Penn battle 5000 with 30lb Spyderwire invisabraid. Water visibility was at about 6 to 8 feet which is very clear for San Francisco Bay. The rock cod hit the BerkleyGulf 4 inch swimming mullet over the live caught anchovies.

San Francisco Bay Kayak California Halibut
Launched out from Oyster point marina searching for California halibut. Check out the gear list to help you land the next big fish.
Moo’s big fish from this trip:
MooMoo Outdoors channel:
The Lost Anchovy channel:
Gear list:
Rod & Reel Setup – California Halibut:
Rod: QI Fishing Trident Rock Cod Jigger: Excellent blank with Fuji guides and reel seat. Use code “JCM25” to get $25 off on your next order.
Reel: Avet SXJ G2 5.3 Single Speed – Small and narrow profile reel that fits in hand perfectly, no need pay extra for Raptor and MC (Break controll). Two speed (6/4) could be a nice upgrade:
Main line: PowerPro 30lb braid - sufficient for California halibut and salmon:
Terminal Tackle Setup – California Halibut:
Krippled Anchovy: Color doesn't matter IMO, perfect for salmon and halibut:
Hook: Gamakatsu Octopus Hook 3/0:
Trailer Hook: Owner Treble Hook Size 2:
Flasher: I don’t use a lot of dodger, but sometimes flasher for halibut.
Hoochie: Plastic squid skirt is very effective for halibut fishing. I usually put one in front of the bait to attract attention. Goldstar is the only brand I use now. It is on the more expensive end, but it is very high quality product and catches fish:
Sinker: I like torpedo sinker for halibut trolling. It reduces line swing and the weight cut through the water better. Have some 8oz, 10oz, 12oz, and 16oz ready each trip and make adjustment if needed:
Boat Setup:
Hobie Outback: Hobie Outback is #1 kayak choice in Bay Area. It handles well in ocean, bay, and inland lakes:
Kayak Cart: This balloon wheel works on almost all surface:
Fish finder: Lowrance Hook2 5 - the newly improved Lowrance fish finder with CHRIP, perfect size for kayak fishing, 5 inch screen:
Fish finder battery Kit: Perfect starter kit that has everything needed to fire up and go:
Accessories Mount: Scotty product works well on Hobie. Either regular deck mount (avoid locking deck mount) or Flush Deck Mount (drilling required) works very well. Regular side deck mount: Flush Deck Mount:
Back Plate: Scotty backing plate could help to reinforce the plastic:
Extension Arm: Coupled with rod holder, this extension arm helps a lot on a kayak with limited deck space:
Rod Holder: Great rod holder that can be used universally:
Visibility Kit: This is the ONLY one approved by coast guard. The light can be seen miles away. I always bring it if I know I will be kayaking in the dark:
Visibility Base Mount: StarPort HD is the base mount for Visibility Kit of Camera Boom:
Camera Boom: Railblaza Camera boom allows 360 degree swing of the camera angle:
Key Accessories:
NRS Chinook PFD - One of the best PFD for kayak fishing. The high back makes so much easier vs. a generic PFD:
Farmer John 3mm wetsuit - this wetsuit saved my life once fishing in northern California coast, highly recommended:
Hand Held VHF Radio: Invest a good VHF radio is absolutely critical. Standard Horizon HX870 is #1 ocean kayak angler’s choice:
Line Cutter: This is one of my favorite tool. Unlike nail clipper or a pair of scissors, this tool is small and sharp. Saltwater resistant with a retractable cord. I put it on my PFD:
Fish Grip: This is a must have item for kayak fishing. It secure the catch well and saves fingers from getting fish bites:
Reliable Kayak Killbag - I always bring my Reliable killbag, one of the best investment I ever made. It always keep my catch cold and fresh:
Game Clip: I use game clip to secure and bleed the fish after the catch to achieve highest meat quality. After that is done, I put the fish in the Reliable killbag to keep it cool and fresh for the remaining of the trip until I get home:
Fillet Knife: For most of my catch, I use this knife to bleed and gut the fish right away on kayak. After I get home, I use the same knife to fillet the catch:
Landing net: It is required to have a landing net when fishing on kayak. I like big next for salmon and halibut, this significantly reduces the change of losing the fish:
Gaff: I have used this gaff over 3 years. Still in very good shape:
Kayaking in Redwood shores. Bay Area Weekend Trips.
Another way to have fun during a weekend.
There are many ways to kayak in Bay Area. Both Foster City and Redwood City Shores located on the east side of the highway 101 have a net of canals with calm water and interesting views. Today, we are going to explore some of those canals.
Not so long ago, in 1960s this place was marshes and salt evaporation ponds then it became a water park called Marine Word and now it’s a quiet neighborhood, which I like to compare to Italian Venice.
It may be a challenge to find a good access spot because many places are private property. Anyway, Marlin Park has a nice little beach near soccer field which makes it a perfect place to get started.
We paddled from park to Redwood shores lagoon, to the bridge near the public library. This is a long stretch of water often used for boat races.
There are plenty birds on the way, cormorants, egrets, sea gulls even lonely swan. We saw the swan in a small lagoon at the North-East tip of our route. Swans are territorial and a pair of these birds was brought to ward off Canada geese. Sadly, female was killed.
The place is beautiful any time of the year. Really easy kayaking even for a beginner but do not forget to wear your flotation device.
Leslie Salt Company was gathering salt here since 1920’s and then decided to develop the place into residential community in 1960s. The old evaporation ponds were quickly filled with some soil mixed with construction debris. It took time but eventually the so-called “waterfront master planned community” came to be.
It is worth noting that the Redwood Shores is still surrounded by marshes and sloughs with muddy shores and we do not recommend venture there unless you have appropriate experience and training.
Lagoons and canals in internal parts of the city between Marine Parkway and Redwood Shores Parkway is your best bet if you want to enjoy the adventure.
Thanks for watching, add a comment if you have any useful or interesting information to share and good luck in your travels!

Pier 26 Hairy moments kayaking under the SF Bay Bridge by Stacy Poulos PostcardTravelers 4th-4
Hairy moments kayaking under the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge 4th of July. Very dangerous conditions building. Left me weak in my knees. This video clip is of me hovering around Pier 26 right next to the bridge. The bridge itself provided great lighting, however I was battered with a slew 5 foot waves making me abort my plan to stay longer. You can see at one point the waves get high, but got even higher killing my front light.

NIGHT KAYAKING ON THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY WITH REI
Thanks REI for collaborating with me on this video #OptOutside #REIOutdoorSchool
Come with me on a moonlight kayaking adventure on the San Francisco Bay. REI invited me to come check out an evening kayak tour in the Richmond Marina. We rode two-seater tandem kayaks and explored the quiet marina area on a warm Indian summer night.
No experience was required for this event, so it was a really fun learning experience. Also, no one fell in the water!
Unfortunately, my DJI OSMO Mobile did not survive the excursion. It bumped the concrete dock as I was getting in the kayak so I couldn't capture as much video footage as I planned on shooting. Despite breaking my gear which I always know is a risk when vlogging doing outdoorsy things like this, I had an amazing time out on the water!

Kayak Commute: Bay Area Woman Finds Creative Way to Get to Work
It's no secret commuting in the San Francisco Bay Area is as difficult as it gets.
But Richmond resident Janis Johnson has found a unique way to commute to work: she kayaks.
“I had come down here from the foothills and I kind of jokingly boasted to my friends, ‘I’m going to get a kayak and kayak to work,’” Johnson told NBC Bay Area on a chilly August morning while getting ready for her kayak commute. “I was just thinking that would be the ultimate in coolness and so, I did!”
