Tongariro River Trail Mountain Bike Trail Guide Video, Great Lake Taupo, New Zealand
The Tongariro River Trail is a relaxing ride, along one of the North Island’s most popular rivers.
It is perfectly suited for families and casual riders seeking to explore the native bush and clear waters of the river, without having to ride a long distance.
The track is a grade 2 trail on mostly flat terrain, making it suitable for children and beginner riders to enjoy.
It’s a 15km loop track of undulating, yet comfortable ground, which will take a family a couple of hours to complete (or close to an hour for more experienced riders).
Getting There :
The trail begins at the car park next to the Tongariro River Bridge on State Highway 1 in Turangi, where you can park your car. Alternatively you can take a shuttle service from Taupo or Turangi to the trail head.
There are alternative starting points along the trail where you can park your car at the scenic reserves and begin your ride from there. This means shorter routes can be tailored to suit your particular needs. Contact the Turangi i-SITE or one of the shuttle services who will help you customize the best drop off and pick up point for you.
The trail has a variety of scenic locations to stop off at for a picnic lunch, or even a quick dip in the river to cool off during the hot summer months.
The Tongariro National Trout Centre is also on route, where you can get up close to the beautiful trout which inhabit the Tongariro River, or view the endangered native Whio (Blue Duck) at the newly purpose-built hardening facillity.
The trail can be ridden in all weather conditions and mobile phone coverage is good throughout the ride.

Tongariro Crossing and Mt Ngauruhoe, New Zealand [GoPro]
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing in Tongariro National Park is one of New Zealand's most spectacular tramping tracks, and is considered the most popular one-day tramp in New Zealand. The Tongariro National Park is a World Heritage site which has the distinction of dual status, as it has been acknowledged for both its natural and cultural significance.
The crossing passes over the volcanic terrain of the multi-cratered active volcano Mt Tongariro, passing the eastern base of Mt Ngauruhoe which can optionally be climbed as a side trip.
The full distance of the track is usually 19.4-kilometre (12.1 mi). After an eruption on 21 November 2012, the track was changed to a 24.5-kilometre (15.2 mi) walk. The usual walk was reopened on 8 May 2013.

Quad Biking in Rotorua + Tama Lakes Hike in Tongariro National Park | Travel Vlog
We went quad biking in Rotorua in the rain in the hills and saw so many sheep and cows! Our hike to the Tama lakes was drizzly, slightly chilly, but a whole lot of fun and was worth it when we got to see the view of the lakes. Everything cleared up on the day we left the park, naturally. Nature is always unpredictable, so you have to make the best of it!

Tongariro Volcano Crossing New Zealand
Crossing the Tongariro Volcano is not an easy hike. But it is definitely worth every drop of sweat, tired feet and the course of changing clothes all the time. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing Track spans the length of Mount Tongariro, covering 19.4 kilometers and on average the track takes between seven to nine hours. All three volcanos have erupted in recent times. The last confirmed eruption of Tongariro was 1897 (Te Maari) at the end of a sequence lasting at least 40 years.
