Kamp Klamath Overview - Klamath, California
In November 2016 we visited Kamp Klamath while touring the redwoods of Californians northern coast.
Visit Their Website -
The campground offers amenities for all styles of camping including full hookup 30 Amp, water and sewer sites for larger RV's. More rustic water and electric sites, and even remote tree covered sites for tents. There are even a few pull through sites for Large rigs in the full hookup section.
The campground is situated along the wild and beautiful Klamath River about a mile from where it empties into the pacific ocean. A short hiking trail will take you down to the water from the campground.
Chickens roam free in open areas and you can purchase their eggs at the campground convince store and gift shop. There is also a playground area, horseshoes and large deck where the summer entertainment happens. Every Saturday during the summer months is the time to visit as they hold a large all you can eat barbecue, with fresh local salmon, vegetables from their garden live music and a bonfire!
Within just a short drive from the campground there is so much to explore. Less than a mile from the campground you will come to the mouth of the Klamath river. Here we watched seals and sea lions playing and fishing in the surf. Across the River you can drive to the overlook to take in the stunning view and spend some time watching for whales.
We were sure to soak up the redwoods while we visited as well stopping at the trees of mystery to see their giant Paul Bunyan statue, amazing redwoods hike and excellent native american museum. There is also the drive through tree on your way down to prairie creek state park to see the giant redwoods and herds of elk. We also visited fern canyon which is a truly magical hike.
During the summer there is even more to do as well, like enjoying the world class salmon fishing and jet boat rides along the coast.
We enjoyed our stay at Kamp klamath and its excellent central location for visiting the wild rivers coast.
Crescent City & Klamath, California on a Budget (127)
Highway 299 from Redding towards the pacific coast was too beautiful for words. Very winding and hilly, it still delivered epic views. We made our way to Crescent City and also discovered some local attractions.
We just loved the redwoods along the river in Jedediah Smith State Park. The crystal clear water made Fi want to go for a swim. The Pacific coast from Northern California all the way up through B.C. and to Alaska is breathtaking. It's at 2:15 in the video.

MOUTH OF KLAMATH RIVER
MY FIRST FLIGHT OFF A CLIFF AT THIS VERY SPECIAL PLACE AT THE MOUTH OF THE KLAMATH RIVER. AMAZING TO SEE THE SEA LIONS AT THE OPENING OF MOUTH AND TO SEE THE HUGE SAND BAR BLOCKING SALMON FROM SWIMING UPSTREAM TO SPAWN AND DIE WHERE THEY WERE HATCHED. AMAZING ANIMALS
California Camping @ Kamp Klamath in the heart of the Redwoods
Purposefully travel south down Hwy. 101 from Oregon, or north, up 101 from anywhere along the California coast to experience camping like you've never experienced it before. This unique RV park is truly a park that is set between the Klamath River mouth to the Pacific Ocean and a pavilion of giant trees. It's a welcoming place; you can get several good night's rests here. A walk on the beach is just one and half miles away; or, take a short day-trip to Trees of Mystery where you will visit Paul Bunyan and Babe, the blue ox. There, forest trails wind their way through actual mystery trees that are shaped like pretzels and DNA strandoids entirely by the forces of nature.
Play crazy golf or ladder ball in the garden; maybe a game of volleyball with friends. They even have sets of croquet to use, remember that game with the wickets, the mallets and the balls you have to hit through the wickets? Take a drive through the redwoods; visit Jedediah Smith and Prairie Creek State Parks. You'll be amazed at the largest species of trees on the face of the earth. If you're up for a hike, you can take the trail through the albino redwoods after enjoying a seashore stroll. Listen for hawks that glide overhead.
Be sure to make your stay include a Saturday night so that you can take in the weekly BBQ that features delicious chicken and salmon, seasoned with the secret recipe Bigfoot Rub. You might get to visit with some of the Kamp Klamath staff as they sing songs or tell stories after the evening feast. Guys like Tugboat Willie (plays the washtub bass), Doug King (doubles as the park manager and the park main entertainment, and the park owner - Aaron Funk and Shadow (Aaron's dog and the real boss, at least of Gotcher, the goat). All three tell great stories, so be sure to request Ghost Riders in the Sky, The Days of 69, or Highway Patrol. One of my favorite stories is the one Aaron shares about Oregos, who sits at the mouth of the river and tells the fish when they should leave the ocean and head up the Klamath River.
Crescent City is only 30 miles north and has some excellent activities to offer. You can crab on Citizens Dock (we caught 43 red crab in one setting - check the limits), visit the Rumiano Cheese Factory to get some great deals on delicious cheese, walk along the beach, and don't miss their outstanding 4th of July celebration that starts with a morning town parade.
It's a fun-filled week or more, all accessible from Kamp Klamath. When you check in to get your site, be sure you tell them CamperRick sent you!
Klamath River
Running water. A braid of the Klamath river makes its way between redwoods and ferns, across the lands of the Yurok reservation, to the Pacific Ocean in Northern California.
Kayaking Big Ike's Rapid-Klamath River, Northern California
Running Big Ike's Rapid at 2500ish CFS during a week at Otter Bar Lodge. Big Ike's is on the Ike's Run of the Klamath River in Northern California. Otter Bar is a great place to learn or advance in kayaking. The instruction is the best I have had, the setting spectacular, and the food is amazing.
California Route 139 Susanville to Klamath Falls on a rainy day
Traveling California Route 139 from Susanville to Klamath Falls on a rainy day in April.
Our trip back to Oregon from Arizona this year was mostly in the rain once we got to northeast California. We did not let that deter us from taking California Route 139 from Susanville, CA to Klamath Falls, OR. This route is considered one of the loneliest routes in California so of course, it fit right into our type of traveling. It was a lovely drive and one that we will do again when the weather is better.

Kayaking Ike's Run - Klamath River, California
This video shows the major rapids on the Ike's Run of the Klamath River in Northern California. The put-in is at the confluence of the Klamath and Cal-Salmon Rivers and the run goes for 5-6 miles with all the rapids in the first 2-3 miles and then finishes with a scenic, mostly flatwater paddle to the take-out at Dolans Bar. The run took us about 2 hours and the shuttle is easy enough to do 2-3 laps if desired.

Day 36 Yurok - Klamath, California
We get a good start on a sunny day and head south and to the beach. Ah Soh is with me to do his first 20 mile trip on the Ride for Freedom. He is only 8 years old.
We hike and ride up over a mountain and then to Klamath, home of the Yurok people. They are really good to us. We soon have Hampton a place and have the bus moved.
The beaches are great, people are surfing, there is the blue and rocky coast. And already so many California wild flowers.
Ah Soh had a really good day and he saw a fresh water eel today. He will be sleeping in.
And thanks to Ray in Crescent City for bring by food with his son. Very kind.
Klamath River Steelhead
There's a handful of quality steelhead fisheries in Northern California. Meanwhile, few can provide as much action as Del Norte County's Klamath River during the summer months. Fed by clean, cold water from the Blue Creek Drainage, steelhead migrate to this area to take refuge in the cool water and avoid the summer heat of the main stem Klamath River.
Armed with quarter-size chunks of Pautzke Natural BorX O Fire cured roe, guide Mick Thomas has fished the river for more than four decades and enjoys double digit hookups prior to the annual fall salmon run, which takes place in mid August.
