Tingara Boys
Story on Leading Signalman John William Jack Varcoe. He was born at Bakers Swamp near Wellington on 20 July 1897, and attended Dubbo District School. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy as Boy Second Class on 3 June 1913, and did his training on the training ship HMAS Tingira. He then served on HMAS Cerberus and HMAS Pioneer, then served on the destroyer HMAS Parramatta from 14 April 1917 to 20 July 1919, during which time he was awarded a Distinguished Service Medal. The bronze statue of the RAN sailor on the Cenotaph in Martin Place is modelled on Leading Signalman John William Varcoe.

Wilfred McDonald
Story on Wilfred Ernest McDonald, who was born in Dubbo in 1894. He grew up on a farm at Delroy near Dubbo, then moved with his parents to Wongarbon. He joined the Gilgandra to Sydney Coo-ee Recruitment March when it passed through Wongarbon on 14 October 1915. He embarked from Sydney on the HMAT A15 Star of England on 8 March 1916 as reinforcement for the 13th Battalion. He was transferred to the 4th Division Artillery in Egypt on 16 April 1916. Gunner McDonald arrived at Marseilles in France on 13 June 1916. On 25 June 1916 he was transferred to the V4A Heavy Trench Mortar Battery. He was killed in action in the Battle of Bullecourt on 3 May 1917. His name is remembered on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France, and on the Dubbo War Memorial roll of honour.

Nurses of WWI
Story about Staff Nurse Ada Mildred Thompson, told by her sister Annie Thompson, set soon after Ada's death at Woodman's Point Quarantine Station at Freemantle on 1 January 1919. Her sister reads a poem titled 'A nurse's dedication' that was published in the Perth Sunday Times on January 19 1919 in memory of the nurses buried at Woodman's Point Quarantine Station.

Ada Mildred Thompson was born in Dubbo in 1886, and enlisted as a nurse in the Australian Army Nursing Service on 19 October 1917. She enlisted in the AIF as a Staff Nurse on 14 October 1918. She embarked from Sydney on the SS Wyreema on 14 October 1918, and disembarked for duty at Freemantle on 10 December 1918. She died of pneumatic influenza at Woodman's Point Quarantine Station in Western Australia on 1 January 1919, aged 33 years.

Cedric Grant
Story on Cedric Hordon Grant, described as an Aboriginal man who was born in Cowra, and was living in Dubbo when he enlisted in Sydney on 11 September 1915, aged 22 years of age. He was in the 54th Battalion, and embarked from Sydney on HMAT A4 Ceramic on 14 April 1916. After a few months in Egypt he returned to Australia on 13 February 1917 with a bacterial infection in his right eye. He was discharged as medically unfit on 2 June 1917.

Reg and Russell Brown
Story on brothers Reginald Roy Brown and Russell James Brown, who enlisted in the AIF 6th Light Horse Regiment. They bred racehorses and had properties near Dubbo, and mention is made of the racehorse 'Dipso' who was taken by Reg Brown to Egypt. Reginald Roy Brown later transferred to the British Royal Field Artillery. Lieutenant Reginald Roy Brown died in an accident while on active service in France on 31 October 1918. His brother Trooper Russell Brown returned to Australia after the war.

OLD DUBBO GAOL 2019
Old Dubbo Gaol 2019
In February 2019 we visited Old Dubbo Gaol which is located in Macquarie street Dubbo New South Wales Australia.
The Dubbo Gaol was erected on the site of the original courthouse. It is believed to have been officially opened in 1887. Many of the buildings however were already in existence by this time. Many changes and new buildings followed. The surrounding wall also changed shape. Closed as a gaol in 1966, the complex re-opened as a tourist attraction in 1974.
In 2015 Old Dubbo Jail won a silver prize in the cultural tourism category of the 12th Travel Inland Tourism Awards. The Gaol was inducted into the Tourism Hall of Fame. In August 2016 the gaol was closed to allow extensive restoration and renovation of the site.
The Old Dubbo Gaol is a small, compact gaol located within the central business district of Dubbo. The enclosing wall is extensive and high. It is built of Dubbo red-brown bricks in English bond, with piers, laid in lime mortar. Above the north-eastern corner of the wall is a watchtower having a wide eaved roof of corrugated iron. Originally a catwalk extended from the watchtower. The structure inside the gaol wall include the main male cell block with 12 ordinary cells and specialised cells comprising two solitary confinement cells, a padded cell, a condemned cell; the female cell block comprising two cells, a bathroom and exercise yard; the infirmary and kitchen block, including a kitchen, infirmary, Library, bathroom, two store rooms, two offices; two remand yards adjacent to a debtors exercise yard and an early toilet block, laundry building with toilets and fenced exercise yards, sanitary disposal facility, toilet. The buildings are mainly sandstone with hipped corrugated iron roofs, while the entrance, watchtower and women's cell block are of brick. The infirmary and kitchen and the male exercise yard feature simple wooden brackets to the verandah posts. The gallows were re-erected

James Rhodes
Story on a James Rhodes, a New Zealander who worked at the Court House Hotel in Dubbo, before enlisting in the AIF on 26 August 1914 in the 3rd Infantry Battalion. The actor reads out the letter that James Rhodes sent to Dr. King in Dubbo, which describes his experiences in the first landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. The letter was published in the Dubbo Liberal on 25 June 1915 (p. 2) and can be viewed online on Trove: Lance Corporal James Rhodes was killed in action at Lone Pine, Gallipoli, on 6 August 1915, aged 27.

Vice-Regal Reception hosted by the Governor of NSW while visiting Dubbo
His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret'd) Governor of New South Wales and Mrs Hurley visited Dubbo and the region from 17 to 19 February 2016. On Thursday 18 February HE hosted a reception in the foyer of the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre.
