Costa Rica: Santa Elena, Monteverde - International Living
Short Video Tour of Santa Elena, Monteverde, Costa Rica - International Living
High in the Tilaran Mountains of Costa Rica is the Monteverde region. It's one of the top tourist destinations in the country thanks to the natural beauty, abundant wildlife, and opportunities for adventures sports and hiking. It's a bit over three hours to the west of Costa Rica's capital, San José.
The main town of the region, Santa Elena, serves as a home base for travelers and long-time foreign residents alike. The town has basic services like banks, grocery stores, gas stations, medical clinics, hotels, and restaurants. Local expats, a mix of retirees, families, and tourism business owners, tend to have an independent spirit and a somewhat bohemian nature.
The elevation means that days are mild and nights are cool. And in certain times of year, the area recalls the Pacific Northwest, with drizzling rain and misty views. Monteverde is best-known for its cloud forest. A high-altitude rain forest, it is a unique environment in which clouds drift through the trees leaving behind moisture, which creates lush and dense greenery.
In the video below, International Living Costa Rica Editor Jason Holland offers a tour of the road into Santa Elena, as well as the city center and its environs.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Costa Rica (2019) | Must see Costa Rica
Monteverde Cloud Forest Costa Rica (2019) | Must see Costa Rica
One of the things Costa Rica is famous for is it's cloud forests and we couldn't visit Monteverde without spending a day exploring the cloud forest in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.
Despite being budget travellers sometime we just have to splash out and this is one of those times. A short bus ride from our hostel in Santa Elena we arrived at the cloud forest reserve. We spent the day hiking though the forest and we were not disappointed, great views of the cloud forest, wonderful nature with awesome birds and animals.
The Monteverde cloud forest is definitely one of our must see sites in Costa Rica.

San Jose Costa Rica to Monteverde by bus | Santa Elena Natural Bridge
Monteverde is the main location in Costa Rica to view the cloud forest. Most people who want to visit the cloud forests stay in the small town of Santa Elena.
In this episode we leave Costa Rica's capital city - San Jose and take a bus to the town of Santa Elena, Monteverde. There were some great views on the bus. We take a walk around Santa Elena and after some lunch we head off to find the not so well know natural bridge - who's location is really only known by locals. Well worth a visit if you can find it.

monte verde cloud forest hike Santa Elena Costa Rica
A must see park central north in Costa Rica. Well marked and maintained trails. Don't need a guide. If you're really interested download info before you go. It allows you to be on your time and hang out where you want. This park I don't remember if they checked our backpacks for food. At any rate we had a picnic. Didn't see any Sloths at this park so don't get a kink in your neck. This is where the warmer Caribbean air and the Cooler Pacific Breezes collide to create an almost constant mist.

Walking around town of Monteverde (Santa Elena), Costa Rica
The town of Monteverde or Santa Elena is where most of the tourists will stay and is easy to navigate. The main streets are setup in a triangle with most of the tourist shops. restaurants and guesthouses very close to this main triangle center. Monteverde very much felt like a mountain or resort town without any ski resort near by. Good coffee, good food, good hiking, good times!

CLOUD FOREST IN MONTEVERDE - COSTA RICA VLOG PART 4
In part four of my Costa Rica vlog series, we travel by bus to Monteverde. This mountain town is well-known for its awesome cloud forests and wildlife sightings. We got to see a sloth up close during another night hike and we explored the tree tops in one of the cloud forests in the region. Monteverde was like no other area we visited in Costa Rica. It felt like stepping into another country for a few days, the climate was different to the rain forest tropics and the mountainous region was as windy as Cape Town! I recommend checking this area out if you're ever visiting Costa Rica.

Monteverde Costa Rica Night Walk and Tour at Valle Escondido
For our night hike / tour, we were shuttled to Valle Escondido Preserve about 5:00pm straight from our lodge. The area of Monteverde, during our stay, was really windy and the location of the night hike was no different, super windy.
When we arrived we were greeted by our guide and were given our flashlights. We still had a few minutes until the night hike started so I ran down and got a time lapse of the sunset... stunning!
Once we got down into the jungle / forest a bit, the wind wasn't as bad but you could still see and hear it blowing fiercely above us. Our guide showed us everything he could find but apparently the strong winds kept a lot of the night life out of the trees.
We saw several types of birds, spiders, and ants but that was about it. A bit disappointing, but to no fault of our tour guide or the establishment. You can't make animals appear on demand unless you're at a zoo or Disneyland :)
Overall, just being in the forest, in central america, in Costa Rica, in Monteverde... in the middle of nowhere was really awesome. Although we didn't see much, just being out in nature was awesome. Highly recommend the night tour and walk at Valle Escondido Preserve.
On a technical note, I tried shooting this footage with my GoPro Hero4 Silver in low light mode at 1080p / 60fps and think it turned out pretty good.
Comment if you've had better luck with other settings in low light situations.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve Costa Rica
July 2019 Nancy and I spent the day at national park. We hiked about 3 miles and climed an equal elevaion of 24 floors. Got to see the amazing natural beauty. At about 5000 feet above sea level the rain forest is blanketed in clouds most days providing moisture for the plants. We spotted the two toed sloth and pack of coati's with no fear of humans. Not many birds on this day.
